I was 42 stone and an alcoholic - but these people saved me

Josh Pilkington, 31, was working as an actor when he slipped mid-performance during a gig at Edinburgh's Fringe Festival.
Josh, who appeared in Neds, broke his knee as a result which hugely affected his mental health, to the point where he didn't leave his home for seven years.
Josh said: "I was doing a show, I was emphasising a point and stamping my knee, and my knee went the other way, I immediately turned pale.
"I said I was taking a month off, then I was in my house for seven years, and I got up to 42 stone."

"It wasn't a job, it was a career, and it was lovely. It was the first time I couldn't wait to get up the next day," he said.
"I was in the job for maybe a year and I was just burnt out. I didn't have coping mechanisms.
"It was just day after day, and eventually I said, 'Can I get a week off?. Then I took a second week off.
"When I walked into the third week, someone already had my job. They fired me without telling me," he added.
When the pandemic struck, Josh managed to cope at home, confined with his family, but when restrictions lifted and they began getting back into work, he turned to alcohol.
Josh explained: "All of a sudden, I started drinking because I just didn't want to be in reality, and then there was weed. I became absurd.
"I would take as much as I could as long as I could, whatever I could afford, and then some. I was thinking, how do I sell my stuff?"
Before tackling addiction. Josh explained he woke up in his room one day, shocked to find blood all over the place, his TV broken, PlayStation smashed, couch flipped and no recollection of the past 24 hours.
He added: "I had blacked out."
What he knows about the events of that day has been told to him by others.
He said: "Apparently, I had got in my mum's face and I was saying, 'What has she done for me?' and 'You're the worst, I hope you don't wake up' - things that I don't believe.
"With the blood everywhere, I had self-harmed and cut a big bite out of my toe.
"I even broke up with my girlfriend, Laura.
"Even to this day, I don't remember all of this, it's recollections and putting puzzle pieces together."

Josh has since been on the road to recovery after first getting involved with the Hope for Recovery group in Clydebank's Hope Community Church.
He now volunteers as part of the team that goes into schools to share their story and steer kids away from the troubles of addiction.
The church recently launched its official programme, which runs for 12 weeks and aims to allow addicts a chance to learn about recovery.

"It's open for anybody within the community, whether people have a faith or don't, whether they're interested or not interested. It's entirely up to them. We're very relaxed, very informal.
"We teach biblical principles in a very informal way, and it's really up to individuals what they want to take and maybe try to apply them to their life."
Hope for Recovery is based in Hope Community Church every Monday, from 11am to 1.30pm.
The group took part in a walk on Good Friday to commemorate the official launch of the scheme.

Foo Fighters announce new drummer after bitter split from Taylor Hawkins' replacement – and he's familiar face to fans

The band was formed in 1994 by front man Dave Grohl DRUMMER DRAMA Foo Fighters announce new drummer after bitter split from Taylor Hawkins' replacement – and he's familiar face to fans Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Foo Fighters have had more members than the Sugababes at this point and now the newest person joining the rock band has been unveiled. The iconic group, which released a new song last month, have found the perfect replacement and it's somebody fans will already recognise – it's none other than Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin. 4 Foo Fighters have revealed their newest drummer Credit: Getty 4 Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin is joining the iconic rock band Credit: Getty 4 Josh Freese was axed from the band in May this year Credit: Getty Ilan, 37, has had tremendous success as Nine Inch Nails' touring drummer since 2009 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, making him the youngest-ever entrant at the time at 32 years old. Rock fans will also know Ilan as he's been the drummer for Angels & Airwaves since 2005. The exciting development comes after previous drummer Josh Freese was axed from the group back in May after two years. He joined the band in 2023 following the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins, who died suddenly while on tour in Colombia in March 2022. The group had reportedly called Josh at the time to tell him they were 'going in a different direction' with no further explanation given. Josh, 52, shared a picture of his statement revealing his departure from the legendary group, captioning it simply on Instagram: 'Well, there it is.' In the emotional post, he wrote: 'The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they've decided 'to go in a different direction with their drummer.' No reason was given. :( 'Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. 'In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry - just a bit shocked and disappointed. 'But as most of you know, I've always worked freelance and bounced between bands, so, I'm fine. Foo Fighters make surprise Glastonbury performance as The Churn Ups 'Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters' list.' According to The Hollywood Reporter, while Ilan has joined the Foo Fighters, Josh is returning to Nine Inch Nails. The news has been confirmed with the band sharing a story of Josh and tagging him with a caption that reads: 'Let's f*****g go.' It's still unclear whether Ilan is joining Foo Fighters as a full-time member or as a touring drummer. As die-hard Foo Fighters fans are aware, the band is fronted by Dave Grohl as vocalist and guitarist and also features bassist Nate Mendel, guitarists Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett and keyboardist Rami Jaffee. The band was formed in 1994 after Grohl created Foo Fighters to release solo music after Nirvana broke up the same year. During their three decade-long career, the group has released eleven studio albums, four compilation albums, one live album, four extended plays and ten Foo Files EPs.

How to get a selfie with Billy Connolly's big banana boots in Glasgow

Billy Connolly's big banana boots, loved by generations of his fans, usually have pride of place at Glasgow's People's Palace. While the museum is shut for redevelopment, however, the Big Yin's boots will be at the St Enoch Centre for a one-day-only pop up. (Image: Newsquest) On August 25, you can snap a selfie with them, and learn about their story from expert curators and conservators from The People's Palace. In 1975, Glasgow pop artist Edmund Smith made Billy Connolly the boots for his tour, and they became his trademark. In 2010, Billy received the freedom of the City of Glasgow from Lord Provost Bob Winter, and the boots were on display. At the fun day, there will also be banana boot-themed arts and crafts for young children. The People's Palace team will also be running a public consultation about the museum's refurbishment, allowing people to share their ideas for what they would like to see when the venue re-opens. This event, which is part of the Glasgow 850 celebrations, runs from 11am until 2pm. Our People's Palace, a touring display curated by The Friends of the Pipe Factory, is at Pollok Civic Realm until August 15, and it will be at the St Enoch Centre from August 16 until September 5 before touring to various venues including the Forge Shopping Centre, Mitchell Library and Glasgow City Chambers. GTA 6 in danger of being delayed to September 2026 claims insider

Rockstar's highly-anticipated GTA 6 might be hit with another delay, as an insider claims to know how much it will cost. Ever since Rockstar pushed back GTA 6 from autumn 2025 to May 26 next year, fans have been dreading the possibility of another delay. It wouldn't be out of the norm for Rockstar. The studio is known for delaying its games and while it has rarely done so twice for one title, it did for Red Dead Redemption 2. The western epic was originally slated for 2017, but it was delayed twice before it finally came out on October 26, 2018. A series of job listings earlier this year suggested things were on track for GTA 6, but now an insider has claimed there are 'internal talks' within Rockstar about another delay. In a post on X, insider Millie A, who has a mixed reputation but is known for accurate PlayStation-related leaks, claimed GTA 6 is 'planned' for May next year, 'but internal talks suggest a possible slip to Sep[tember]'. GTA 5 originally launched in September 2013, and considering how successful that was, it perhaps makes sense that Rockstar would consider repeating the same rollout for GTA 6. There have been reports of behind the scenes trouble too. According to a GTA leaker called GameRoll, who previously revealed the last names of GTA 6's protagonists Jason Duvall and Lucia Caminos, the closing portion of the campaign is undergoing some major changes. GTA 6 Update:• Planned release: May 2026, but internal talks suggest a possible slip to Sep• MSRP– Standard: £69.99– Deluxe: £89.99 (early GTA Online access)– Premium: £109.99 (first GTA Online access)• PS5 marketing• Console bundles + PS5/Pro sales promos post-launch — Millie A (@millieamand) July 29, 2025 In screenshots from Discord, GameRoll claimed GTA 6's story would consist of five chapters, in a similar structure to Red Dead Redemption 2, which had six main chapters and two epilogues. However, according to the leaker, the final chapter is in 'development hell', with all the shots from Trailer 2 being from chapters 1-3. They further claim chapter 4 and 5 'still aren't finished' and that 'a huge chunk' of chapter 5 has been cut, so it's being reworked entirely. GameRoll later said this was from 'not a direct source' but a 'friend of a Rockstar developer' – the same person who gave him the information on Jason and Lucia's names. 'Some stuff here may be false, misinterpreted, or complete BS,' they wrote on X. 'I trust the source, but I have no way to prove any of it.' Full list of information given to me by the same source who told me Jason and Lucia's last names:DISCLAIMER: I have no proof of any of this information other than it's all come from the same exact source who told me Jason and Lucia's last names. It is not a direct source. They… — GameRoll (@GameRoll_) June 7, 2025 As his post outlines, it's worth taking all of this with a pinch of salt, especially as trailers usually lean on earlier portions of the game, but a delay certainly isn't out of the question. More Trending Elsewhere, Millie A has claimed the standard edition of GTA 6 will be priced £69.99, but deluxe and premium editions will come in at £89.99 and £109.99, respectively. The former will apparently come with early GTA Online access, while the latter will offer 'first GTA Online access' – presumably some time after launch. While not entirely unbelievable, it would be surprising if GTA 6 doesn't surpass £69.99 for the standard edition – especially in a world where Mario Kart World costs £74.99. Beyond GTA 6, Rockstar is apparently gearing up to release a Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2, along with a GTA 4 remaster. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
