Calcutta HC to hear 2 cases on harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in Odisha, Delhi simultaneously on July 16
One of the two cases is about the harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in Odisha, and the second case is about similar harassment in Delhi.
It was alleged that these Bengal-speaking migrant workers were harassed by the Odisha and Delhi governments after branding them as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators.
The Odisha-related matter came up for hearing at the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra.
The Division Bench decided that instead of hearing the Odisha-related matter separately the same would be heard simultaneously and together with the Delhi-related matter on July 16.
On Monday, the petitioner in the Odisha-related matter informed the court that most of the workers who were detained in Odisha after being branded as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators have returned to West Bengal.
The petitioner also expressed hope that the complications related to the return of a few other migrant workers from West Bengal who are still in Odisha will be resolved soon.
On July 11, the Division Bench of Justice Chakraborty and Justice Mitra directed the Union Home Ministry to submit a report to the court on allegations that some Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal residing in New Delhi have been recently deported to Bangladesh.
The Division Bench also directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to contact his counterpart in the Delhi government and also get a report from the state government there on the same matter, which will also have to be submitted to the court.
Incidentally, on July 16, the Trinamool Congress will be organising a mega rally in Kolkata to be led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in states outside West Bengal, especially in BJP-ruled states.
Besides the main rally in Kolkata, the state's ruling party would also organise similar protest rallies in all the districts.

CBI raid at DRM office: Woman rly official caught taking bribe
LUCKNOW The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday raided the Divisional Railway Manager's (DRM) office at Hazratganj in Lucknow and caught a woman railway official red-handed while accepting a bribe. Sources said three other individuals had also been taken into custody and were being interrogated in connection with the case. (Pic for representation) The accused, Anjum Nisha, a clerk posted in the engineering section of the North Eastern Railway's Lucknow division, is associated with the Gati Shakti project. She allegedly demanded a bribe from a contractor for clearing a pending bill, said sources in the agency. According to agency sources, the CBI had received five complaints alleging corruption in the renovation of small and major railway stations under the project. The estimated budgets ranged from ₹5 crore for minor stations to ₹10 crore for larger ones. Once the complaints were verified, the Delhi-based CBI team, in coordination with their Lucknow counterparts, launched the operation. Mission Gati Shakti is a flagship government initiative aimed at transforming transport infrastructure. The CBI laid a trap, acting on a complaint filed by the contractor. Around 4pm, the contractor handed over an envelope containing cash to Nisha just outside the DRM office. As soon as she accepted the envelope, officials arrested her on the spot. The team remained on the premises until late evening, questioning multiple staff members linked to the project. Sources said three other individuals had also been taken into custody and were being interrogated in connection with the case. Phones snatched in Delhi smuggled to Bangladesh via West Bengal; 6 arrested
New Delhi: Six people, comprising a Delhi-based snatcher, a courier employee and receivers in West Bengal, who smuggled stolen phones to Bangladesh, were arrested after police busted a mobile phone theft ring, an official said on Monday. The case came to light following a series of early morning snatching incidents reported on June 25 from Preet Vihar, Mandawli and Patparganj Industrial Area, he said. 'The breakthrough came on July 6 with the arrest of Salman (37), who was identified through extensive CCTV analysis as the scooty-borne snatcher,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania said and added that the vehicle used in the crimes had been recovered. During interrogation, Salman revealed he used to hand over the stolen phones to Shafi Ahmad alias Teepu (33), who then passed them on to a courier employee, Bhupendra (34), working in Noida. Bhupendra, who also has been arrested, admitted to sending stolen mobile phones to West Bengal's Malda district in exchange for commission, the officer added. In Malda, the receivers were identified as Md Rehman Sekh (35) and Emarul Kayues (36). Police teams were dispatched to West Bengal, where Sekh was arrested on July 11, and seven stolen phones were rec overed from him. 'He admitted to handing over the stolen phones to Kayues, who confessed to smuggling the devices into Bangladesh,' the DCP said and added that another 20 stolen phones were recovered on the information Kayues provided. The accused were produced before a local court in Malda, and their transit remand was secured for further investigation in Delhi. Police also found that Salman's wife, Gulbahar (37), had allegedly received proceeds from the illegal mobile phone trade into her bank account, attracting further legal action. Nine cases of mobile snatching have so far been solved through this operation. The syndicate's financial channels are being scrutinised, and action under Section 112 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (organised crime) has been invoked, police added.
