Apple, Samsung may replace Plus models with ultra-thin smartphones: Report
For those who don't know, Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge on May 13. The phone stands out for its ultra-slim titanium build, measuring just 5.8mm thick and weighing 163g—even though it features a display size similar to the Galaxy S25 Plus. It is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and includes a 200MP primary sensor, which marks a camera upgrade over the Plus variant. However, the ultra-thin design comes with trade-offs: a smaller battery and the absence of a telephoto lens.
Apple, meanwhile, is expected to debut the iPhone 17 Air later this year. The device is rumoured to take inspiration from the ultra-slim iPad Pro design and is likely to replace the iPhone Plus in the company's future line-up. The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to feature a 6.6-inch display and support for ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate. Similar to Samsung's Edge model, it's expected to offer fewer camera sensors, with early reports suggesting a single rear camera set-up. A smaller battery is also expected compared to the current Plus model.
That said, Apple may have an advantage on the software front. A recent Bloomberg report revealed that Apple is developing a new AI-powered battery optimisation feature for the upcoming version of iOS. The feature will reportedly monitor usage patterns and adjust settings in real time to extend battery life—potentially addressing concerns around battery life in its thinner iPhone model.

But it seems the brand has another big product lined up for the big Unpacked event, and this could be the affordable version of the Flip device. The Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9 will introduce the premium Fold 7 and Flip 7 models and it seems like the right platform to showcase something different. Samsung has been in the foldable business for much longer than most brands, and it is high time we see a product that shows its evolution and brings a product that has the potential to go mainstream. According to a tipster, the FE Flip phone could be powered by the same Exynos chipset as the premium Galaxy S24 series. We are eager to see how aggressive the brand is ready to go with the FE Flip model, and whether it can deliver a product with a price tag that convinces people to buy and get more of them interested in the form factor. Chinese workers being ‘pulled from India' by Apple manufacturer Foxconn, report looks at reasons, impact
A Chinese company that makes Apple's iPhones in India has asked hundreds of its Chinese engineers and technicians to return home from the factories. This move by the firm, Foxconn Technology Group, is being seen as a significant blow to Apple's manufacturing push in India. Apple has been ramping up production in India with Foxconn as a major manufacturing vendor. (Reuters file) More than 300 Chinese workers have left already, and now mostly support staff from Taiwan remain in India, the news agency Bloomberg reported. The move began about two months ago, but it's not yet clear why, the report said, citing sources who asked not to be named as the information is private. But it suggests a link between this return-home move with the Chinese government urging its regulatory agencies and local administrations to curb technology transfers and equipment exports to India and Southeast Asia. This was seen as an attempt to prevent companies from shifting manufacturing elsewhere. Impact on iPhone manufacturing in India The Chinese workers' removal from India will slow down the training of local workforce as well as the tech transfer, likely raising production costs of the smartphones, the report said. However, another sources was quoted as saying that the worker extraction 'won't impact the quality of production in India, but it's likely to affect efficiency on the assembly line'. A representative for Apple declined to comment, while Foxconn didn't respond to an emailed request for comment, said the report. India's government was informed by Foxconn about the move, according to Blomberg sources. The government has reportedly not seen a major impact on production yet. Apple boss Tim Cook has lauded the work ethic of the Chinese engineers and assemblers in the past. Apple CEO Tim Cook has, in the recent past, praised Chinese assembly workers, and said that their skill was a key reason — and not just lower costs — for setting up the majority of Apple's production in China. What happens to iPhone 17 ramp-up? While Foxconn still makes most iPhones in China, it has gradually built large assembly operations in India in recent years. It's to that end that experienced Chinese engineers were deployed at the Indian facilities. India, thus, began assembling iPhones at scale four years ago, and now accounts for a fifth of the global output. The change comes at a bad time for Apple, the Bloomberg report analysed, citing its plans to ramp up production of the upcoming iPhone 17 and further plans to build another factory in India. When US-China relations get frostier under Donald Trump, other countries, including India and Vietnam, have been trying to attract global tech companies to diversify their manufacturing locations.
