Energy security: Global crude oil prices have remained relatively stable, says Hardeep Singh Puri; India eyes geothermal push

on Monday said that global crude oil prices have remained relatively stable despite persistent geopolitical tensions, suggesting that the world has sufficient energy resources to meet demand.
'There are many things that have an impact on crude prices. People say that if there is military conflict somewhere, it will have an impact, but there are many military conflicts, and prices are still between $65 and $70 per barrel,' Puri said on the sidelines of a national seminar on school education organised by the Council for Social Development, quoted ANI. 'My view is that there is enough energy available in the world.
'
Puri's remarks come amid continued global uncertainty, with concerns over supply chains and energy inflation resurfacing in light of recent conflicts and climate events.
The minister underlined India's growing engagement in global energy forums, pointing to the country's recent participation in the Opec seminar for the first time. 'It's basically a meeting of the Opec countries. Considering that we are now one of the largest consumers of crude oil in the world, it makes sense for us to be there,' he said.

Reflecting on his recent visit to Austria, Iceland, and Norway, Puri said India is actively looking to expand its clean energy footprint. During his stop in Iceland, he discussed geothermal cooperation with local companies. 'Iceland is very strong on geothermal, and we have ongoing collaborations with them. The advantage of going and talking to the private sector there is identifying future work that can be done,' Puri said.
He also expressed a personal interest in integrating geothermal into India's broader energy mix and hinted at its potential inclusion in the India Energy Week platform.
'India Energy Week was launched three years ago and is now the second-largest global platform after ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi,' Puri said, the agency quoted. 'ADIPEC focuses on oil and gas, while we cover all forms of energy, including biofuels and green hydrogen.
We intend to include geothermal energy as well.'
Puri also cited recent milestones in domestic energy exploration. 'ONGC has drilled over 500 wells, the highest in the past 37 years,' he said, noting the financial risk involved in energy discovery. He referred to the example of Guyana, where 47 wells were drilled at $100 million each before a successful strike.
'We are digging more wells. I am only reporting to you the 18 wells on which, under our law, if somebody who is doing exploration and production finds some oil, they have to report to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons,' he said, reaffirming the regulatory safeguards in place to govern exploration activity in India.

Among other topics, critical discussions were held on the upcoming 'National Sports Governance Bill', which will be tabled in the monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21. While athletes remain at the heart of the Khelo Bharat Niti (national sports policy), the government highlighted how federations, state governments, and corporate houses must play a major role in ensuring India finishes among the top 10 nations in the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics. 'We need to assess at once where we are and where we want to go. To begin with, I urge the NSFs to provide me with a five-year policy by August, and then we can develop a 10-year plan. With the Asian Games in 2026, we need a holistic approach because we not only want to win medals at the Olympics but also make sports a commercial property — where we can invite the world to come and play in India and boost sports tourism,' he said. The discussions also revolved around producing quality coaches, grooming sports administrators, developing the sports goods business, and controlling the menace of doping. 'We are happy to provide all support to NSFs, but going forward, we will also start looking at performance-based grants. This will ensure that we are focused and serious with our planning and how we run the game,' he added. The ministry urged NSFs to prepare a proper calendar of events so that athletes do not suffer logistical issues. Mandaviya informed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC), FIFA — football's global governing body — and international federations (IFs) were deeply consulted during the drafting stage of the governance bill to incorporate their suggestions and work on the objections raised. The minister said he even held discussions with former sports minister and Congress leader Ajay Maken, who was instrumental in the passage of the National Sports Development Code of India in 2011. 'IOC was consulted as well, along with IFs. FIFA had a query, and I sent an officer to their headquarters to discuss it with them. The bill is now ready. I did a series of consultations with NSFs, athletes, coaches and also received 600 inputs from the public when the draft was put online for suggestions. Citing a 2013 government circular that allows the chief minister and ministers to buy phones worth up to Rs 50,000 and Rs 45,000 respectively, Sood showed documents that suggested Kejriwal bought an iPhone 6s Plus for Rs 81,000 in 2015, an iPhone 7 Plus for Rs 69,000 in 2017, an iPhone 12 Pro Max worth Rs 1.39 lakh during the Covid period in 2020, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max for Rs 1.63 lakh in July 2022. He further said Manish Sisodia had purchased five expensive handsets between 2017 and 2022, including Samsung Galaxy S8 models costing nearly Rs 60,000 and iPhones priced between Rs 1.12 lakh and Rs 1.66 lakh. US deploys forces to Panama Canal: Week-long PANAMAX-Alpha exercise begins; defense secretary warns of China's 'maligned influence'
The United States and Panama have launched PANAMAX-Alpha Phase I, a week-long joint military training operation focused on regional security and emergency preparedness for the Panama Canal. The exercise, scheduled from July 13 to 18, 2025, aims to enhance strategic preparedness near the Panama Canal against "threats to the security of the Panama Canal and other strategic infrastructure," according to Panama's National Aeronaval Service. The military exercise is being operated by Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-B) of the US Southern Command, with personnel from Panama's National Aeronaval Service, National Police, and National Border Service participating.
