KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Police have confirmed that an accident involving 21 schoolchildren on the North-South Expressway near the Bandar Dato Onn exit yesterday occurred when the school van they were travelling in rear-ended a trailer that had stopped due to engine problems. Johor Baru North District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said the incident was reported at 6.23pm, and a video of the crash had since gone viral on social media, according to a report published in Buletin TV3 today. 'Investigations revealed the accident happened around 2pm, involving a school van driven by a 46-year-old local man. The van was travelling from the Bandar Dato Onn exit towards northern Johor Baru when it collided with the rear of a trailer that had stopped in the lane due to engine trouble. Belawai boat capsized due to overloading, say police
Five more victims of the boat that capsized off Belawai, Sarawak, were found this morning. (JBPM pic) PETALING JAYA : Overloading caused a boat to capsize off Belawai, Sarawak, killing 10 people on Saturday, say police. Sarikei police chief Aswandy Anis said an early investigation found that the fibreglass boat was not designed to carry 17 people or the extra baggage it had, Kosmo reported. 'The small boat became hard to control and sank after it encountered rough waves,' he said at a press conference after a search-and-rescue operation this morning. The Sarawak fire and rescue department said rescuers had found five more victims in the morning, bringing the total number of casualties to 10. A spokesman said the bodies of the victims – all Indonesian nationals – were recovered by villagers as well as the Sarawak coast guard. In the incident at about 2pm on Saturday, the fibreglass boat carrying 17 Indonesian nationals from the Kampung Belawai fishermen's jetty capsized en route to the Zion Pelita coconut plantation jetty. The seven survivors comprised four men, two women and a boy. Aswandy reminded boat operators and residents to priortise safety while travelling in both the rivers and the sea. 'Don't take safety lightly. Even rivers can see sudden strong waves,' he said.

Bodies of six family members found in rear seat, believed to have tried escaping
The rescue team found all victims on the left rear side of the car. All the victims were taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Setar for post-mortem examination. JITRA – Six family members, including a baby, who were found dead, are believed to have attempted to escape from their car after it plunged into Sungai Korok here, but were unsuccessful. Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Zone 1 Chief, Senior Fire Superintendent I Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said all the victims were found huddled together in the rear seat of a Proton Saga, which was submerged at the bottom of the river. According to him, the rescue team found all victims on the left rear side of the car. "During the rescue operation, we found all the victims in the back seat. It's possible they tried to escape but failed," he said at a press conference at the scene on Monday. The victims have been identified as Muhammad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31 and their four children – Putra Rayyan Nur Izat, 9, Hawa Adriana, 8, Anayla Huma'ira, 7 and Tuah Haidar, six months. Aminuddin said the fire department had to break the car windows and cut through the vehicle's body to retrieve the victims. "When bodies have been submerged for a certain period, they swell and make extraction through regular doors difficult. "So, we had to break the rear window and cut the car structure to retrieve the victims," he said. He added that the distance between the car and the riverbank was only about one metre, while the river was estimated to be six metres deep and approximately 7.6 metres wide. "The operation was not too difficult because the car was already floating and could be pulled to the bank," he added. It was reported that a couple and their four children, including a six-month-old baby, were reported missing after spending the night at a relative's house in Taman Aman since Saturday morning. Their disappearance was noticed when they failed to return to their home in Jerlun and could not be contacted. Azim's younger sister, Nur Adliah Shuhada said her brother and his family had come to stay at her house on Friday night as they usually did.
