Four injured as car crashes into canal in Penang
The victims included an elderly man and three women, with two of them being sisters.
The injured were identified as Mohd Barak Abdul Latiff, 64, who suffered minor injuries, while Rashidah Bee Shaik Mydin, 54, Fatimah Beevi P.M. Mydin, 59, and Mydin Fatimah P.M. Mydin, 63, sustained more serious wounds.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) received an emergency call at 3.24 pm, prompting immediate deployment of a team from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station.
Assistant operations director John Sagun Francis confirmed that all victims were trapped inside the submerged vehicle when rescuers arrived.
'Firefighters used specialized equipment to extract the victims, completing the operation by 4 pm,' he said.
The injured were given preliminary medical treatment before being transported to Penang Hospital via ambulance and a JBPM EMRS vehicle. - Bernama

'As a result of the collision, the van driver and two of the 21 schoolchildren on board sustained injuries and were treated at Sultan Ismail Hospital. 'The 32-year-old trailer driver was uninjured,' he said in a statement last night. The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to control a vehicle, leading to an accident. Earlier, media reports stated that the school van driver was injured after being trapped in the driver's seat following the collision with the trailer. The victim was successfully extricated by Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel within 30 minutes before being sent to hospital.

Five more victims of the boat that capsized off Belawai, Sarawak, were found this morning. (JBPM pic) PETALING JAYA : Overloading caused a boat to capsize off Belawai, Sarawak, killing 10 people on Saturday, say police. Sarikei police chief Aswandy Anis said an early investigation found that the fibreglass boat was not designed to carry 17 people or the extra baggage it had, Kosmo reported. 'The small boat became hard to control and sank after it encountered rough waves,' he said at a press conference after a search-and-rescue operation this morning. The Sarawak fire and rescue department said rescuers had found five more victims in the morning, bringing the total number of casualties to 10. A spokesman said the bodies of the victims – all Indonesian nationals – were recovered by villagers as well as the Sarawak coast guard. In the incident at about 2pm on Saturday, the fibreglass boat carrying 17 Indonesian nationals from the Kampung Belawai fishermen's jetty capsized en route to the Zion Pelita coconut plantation jetty. The seven survivors comprised four men, two women and a boy. Aswandy reminded boat operators and residents to priortise safety while travelling in both the rivers and the sea. 'Don't take safety lightly. Even rivers can see sudden strong waves,' he said.

Bodies of six family members found in rear seat, believed to have tried escaping

"When bodies have been submerged for a certain period, they swell and make extraction through regular doors difficult. "So, we had to break the rear window and cut the car structure to retrieve the victims," he said. He added that the distance between the car and the riverbank was only about one metre, while the river was estimated to be six metres deep and approximately 7.6 metres wide. "The operation was not too difficult because the car was already floating and could be pulled to the bank," he added. It was reported that a couple and their four children, including a six-month-old baby, were reported missing after spending the night at a relative's house in Taman Aman since Saturday morning. Their disappearance was noticed when they failed to return to their home in Jerlun and could not be contacted. Azim's younger sister, Nur Adliah Shuhada said her brother and his family had come to stay at her house on Friday night as they usually did.
