‘4-5 months had passed, was in depression, got anxiety attacks': Yuzvendra Chahal on how his divorce from Dhanashree affected his mental health

Indian Express16 hours ago
In a candid conversation on entrepreneur Raj Shamani's YouTube podcast, Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal opened up for the first time about the emotional turmoil he experienced after his highly public divorce from actor and content creator Dhanashree Verma.
Chahal reflected on the intense mental health challenges he faced: 'After the divorce happened, it occurred to me that people think I'm a cheater. And I have never cheated in my life. I am not that person. You won't find someone more loyal than me. I always think from my heart for my loved ones. I have two sisters—I've seen how girls should be respected. That's what my family taught me.'
The months that followed were particularly dark. 'Four-five months had passed, I was in depression, I got anxiety attacks. My close ones saw it with their own eyes. I don't need sympathy. I had a problem, and sociopathic thoughts arose in my mind. My mind had just stopped working after seeing all this in the media,' he shared.
Chahal also criticised social media for amplifying false narratives and dragging his name through public scrutiny. 'I know my close friends, and they know I've never done something like that. So why should I go and prove myself to others? When the people who truly matter don't care about these rumours, why should I?'
Muskan Marwah, clinical psychologist at Mpower, Aditya Birla Education Trust, said divorce is one of the most emotionally disruptive life events a person can go through. 'It doesn't just mark the end of a marriage, it brings emotional stress, major lifestyle changes, and often a prolonged adjustment phase. While some may feel relief, many others face lasting emotional and mental health impacts,' she said.
Marwah also said that in the long run, divorce can trigger a profound sense of loss –– not only of the partner but also of the shared dreams, routines, and identities that were built together. 'This emotional pain often surfaces as sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, or even numbness,' she said. If unresolved, these feelings may evolve into chronic stress, depression, or low self-esteem.
According to Dr Jyoti Kapoor, founder-director and senior psychiatrist, Manasthali, here are some strategies to navigate coping with your divorce:
Acknowledge that divorce is not just the dissolution of a legal union but a loss that warrants mourning. It is perfectly normal to experience a rollercoaster of emotions — from profound sadness to flashes of anger or even unexpected relief. Allow yourself the space and time to grieve the end of your relationship.
Reach out to a support network composed of friends, family, or a compassionate therapist. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust can provide solace, understanding, and a fresh perspective on your situation.
Prioritise your well-being –– physical and emotional. Divorce can be emotionally taxing, and taking care of yourself becomes paramount. Ensure you get adequate rest, nourish your body with healthy food, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Cultivating self-care habits can be a crucial lifeline during times of upheaval.
Understand that healing is a gradual process that unfolds over time. It's essential to set realistic expectations for yourself, acknowledging that there will be both good and challenging days. Grant yourself the grace to navigate this journey at your own pace.
Establishing a new routine tailored to your current circumstances can instil a sense of stability and control amidst the chaos of change. Routine provides a scaffolding upon which you can rebuild a semblance of normalcy.
Rediscover the passions and pastimes that once brought you happiness and fulfilment. Engaging in these activities not only provides a therapeutic outlet but also aids in rebuilding a sense of identity independent of the marital context.
While acknowledging the past is crucial, redirect your gaze towards the future. Chart out new personal and professional goals and gradually work towards them. Shifting your focus to the possibilities that lie ahead can be a powerful catalyst for personal growth and renewal.

Man Converts Refrigerator Into Classic Shoe Rack. Now, Aparshakti Khurana Wants One

Curated By : Last Updated: August 03, 2025, 08:00 IST Aparshakti Khurana and Jheel Mehta reacted to the video. (Photo Source: Instagram) It's common for people to toss their shoes haphazardly around the house. This habit leads to a messier and less hygienic living space. To solve this issue, a creative Instagram user stunned the internet with his out-of-the-box idea. Any guesses? The said person upcycled an old fridge from a trash station into a vibrant, handmade shoe cabinet exclusively for his Crocs. Yes, you read that right. In a video shared on Instagram, the creator revealed that he often used to throw his Crocs around the house. Spotting an abandoned fridge at a trash station, he decided to give it a new lease of life and give his shoes a proper home. Step-by-Step Process The transformation process to make his new cabinet began with a thorough wash of the fridge. Enjoying the monsoon rains, the man cleaned the fridge nicely. Next, he swapped out the original fridge shelves for custom wooden sliders. He then treated the dents and rusty flakes coming off with iron-based putty, which he recommended picking up from any local hardware store. After allowing the surface to dry overnight, he lightly sanded it smooth, applied a white primer, and then sanded once more for an even base. The painting process brought the cabinet to life. Using chalk paints, he painted a colourful Madhubani art design, a traditional Indian folk art style. The piece was finished with matte varnish or lacquer, peel-and-stick tiles, hooks, decals, and wooden legs, making it look nothing like a former kitchen appliance. Social media reactions The cabinet's bold look and creative reuse didn't go unnoticed. Bollywood actor Aparshakti Khurana commented, 'Tooo good! Whatta Collab." While Jheel Mehta from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah praised the innovation, writing, 'Amazing creativity!" Social media users across the platform also echoed the sentiment. As of now, the upcycled masterpiece has racked up more than 20.3 million views and over 1.5 million likes. 'Dude, this is so good," read a comment. Another added, 'Wow, that's incredible!!!!" 'Sometimes the aesthetic is more valuable than the cost. No doubt a cheaper shoe rack was easier to buy, but the handmade art and efforts put into this rack are more valuable than anything out in the market, not to forget how beautiful that rack is," said a user. An account posted, 'Broooo!!! This is something extraordinary." 'Damn!!! How can someone be so creative?" an individual remarked. Not His First DIY This isn't the first time the creator has impressed with his DIY creativity. In an earlier post, he transformed a vintage '90s telephone into a charming pastel bedside lamp. Swipe Left For Next Video View all He just used two warm white bulbs, a sturdy pipe, and some soft colours to make the beautiful side lamp, proving that one can create beautiful things with a little creativity. 'Watch the film first': The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen's curt message to Kerala CM over National Award criticism

At the 71st National Film Awards, the controversial Hindi film, The Kerala Story, surprised one and all with two major wins - for Best Director and Best Cinematography. The film, which dealt with the subject of radicalisation and religious conversion by terror organisations, had faced opposition by the Kerala government upon its release in 2023. After the win, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan once again criticised it, calling the honour 'an insult to the tradition of Indian cinema'. The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen reacts to CM Pinarayi Vijayan's attack on his film's National Award win. In an exclusive chat with Hindustan Times, The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen addressed the attack, and also shared a message for Chief Minister. What Kerala CM said about The Kerala Story's win Taking to Twitter (now X) on Friday, CM Pinarayi Vijayan wrote, "By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar. Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision. It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear." Sudipto Sen reacts Upon hearing the comment, Sudipto Sen told HT, "I think Pinayari Vijayan, sir, who is a very senior and seasoned politician, hasn't seen my film. Had he seen my film, he wouldn't have made this comment." The filmmaker also claimed that Vijayan once advocated what he is saying now, but has changed his tune over the years. "15 years ago, a prominent Kerala politician had a press conference in Delhi where he said that PFI and SGPI are so active in Kerala that they may turn it into an ISIS state soon. There was a backlash to it in Kerala. And who was the first person to defend this comment? Pinayari Vijayan, who was the Secretary of the Communist Party of India then, not the Kerala CM. What he is saying today and what he said back then are completely different," he added. 'Their job is to do politics' Saying he did not want to be drawn into a political debate, Sudipto Sen said he continues to stand by his film, "I am not a politician, but they are seasoned politicians. I have nothing to say to a political comment, because their job is to do politics. I am a filmmaker. What I can tell you is that we have given 12 years of research to this film. I travelled across several blocks in Kerala, and met 500 girls there. When the Censor Board (CBFC) took two months to clear the film, I gave evidence for each line of dialogue in the film. I stand by every dialogue and visual of the film. Nobody can discredit me by just putting a comment on Instagram or Twitter." Before signing off, the newly minted National Award winner added, "My earnest request to Pinayari Vijayan, sir, is that he should see the film and see if I am wrong. If he can find one line or sentence in the film wrong, he should tell me." About The Kerala Story The Kerala Story starred Adah Sharma in the lead. The film was about a group of girls from Kerala who were radicalised by ISIS militants. Makers claimed that the film is inspired by true events, and that 32000 girls from Kerala have met this fate. This claim was challenged by the Kerala government in court, and the makers had to drop the number from the film. The Kerala Story released to a good reception from the audiences, minting over ₹300 crore at the box office.

"2025 Ka Mera Toh Pehla Tha": Yuzvendra Chahal Jokes About His Divorce With Dhanashree Verma

Indian cricket team player Yuzvendra Chahal came out with a funny reply when asked about people taking cricketers' divorces as a joke. In the past couple of years, three cricketers, including Chahal, have got divorced. Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan are the other two cricketers, who have also got separated legally with their respective ex-wives. Chahal was on Raj Shamani's podcast when he said with a laugh, "I think ek sath bahut saare ho gaye. Har field mein ho gaye. 2025 ka mera toh pehla tha. (I think many divorces have happened at once. They are happening in every field. Mine was the first of 2025.)" "There has been many separations. This has given people an opportunity to laugh at others. They got an opportunity to become gyaani baba (wise man). When you don't know about somebody's life, it is easy to type (on social media)," he added. Chahal and Dhanashree Verma in March this year were granted the decree of divorce by the Mumbai family court. The couple tied the knot in December 2020. As per their petition, they separated in June 2022. On February 5, they filed a joint petition before the family court seeking divorce by mutual consent. The Bombay High Court in March requested the family court to decide the divorce plea. The high court also waived the six-month cooling period stipulated for every couple after filing of the divorce plea under the Hindu Marriage Act. Chahal and Verma had filed a joint petition before the high court, seeking that the cooling-off period be waived in their case as they applied for divorce by mutual consent. The petition had also prayed for a direction to the family court to decide the divorce petition expeditiously. The couple challenged the family court order of February 20 refusing to waive the cooling-off period. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, a couple has to undergo six-month cooling-off period before divorce is granted. The objective is to provide time for exploring the possibility of reconciliation. The family court had refused to waive the cooling-off period on the ground that there was only partial compliance with the consent terms which required Chahal to pay Rs 4.75 crore to Dhanashree at that time. He had paid Rs 2.37 crore, the family court noted. It also cited a report of a marriage counsellor which said there was only partial compliance with the mediation efforts. But the high court held that there was compliance with the consent terms, as they provided for the payment of the second installment of permanent alimony only after the decree of divorce was obtained.
