My suburb's so daggy, our local shops are known as the ‘Square of Despair'
My partner and I are both transplants from interstate; though we'd been in Melbourne a few years and knew our way around Sydney Road – we basically lived in our Dejour jeans – Brunswick West had never been on our radar. When we went 'out their way' for their housewarming party, riding the 58 tram through the parkland and out past the zoo, it felt like we were heading to the end of the line in the middle of nowhere. (Of course, the 58 does continue to 'West Coburg', which we later learned wasn't a real suburb.)
A couple of years and dodgy rentals later, it was our turn to pack our bags for Brunny West, a street away from the Alexes. Now, it's hard to imagine living anywhere else.
There's a small-town community feel in Brunswick West that's harder to find in other inner suburbs. The distance between Sydney Road and Melville Road is not great, but it's far enough for us to remain undisturbed by all the goings-on over there.
It's a perfect setup; close enough to walk home from Eddy Castle after a beer, far enough away that everyone forgets about us. If Brunswick East is the yuppie, apartment-dwelling sibling of the cooler, grungier Brunswick, Brunswick West is the older sister: long past caring what anyone thinks about her, a bit daggy, maybe a bit too excited about her new worm farm. (Or maybe that's just me.)
We're where all the real punks live; punks with really great veggie gardens, who spend their free time knitting jumpers for their rescue greyhounds. Though, while you'd think we'd be lumped in with Brunswick by everyone else, it's more often the reverse: locals here are often hazy on the boundary where we end, and Brunswick begins. Technically, Gillon Oval and Gilpin Park don't belong to us, but to longtime West Brunswegians, pretty much anything this side of Sydney Road is ours.
We're out of the way a bit, a mostly residential suburb with nothing particularly in the way of office buildings or universities. Our shopping centre is Union Square, which almost feels like it shouldn't count. Known fondly to locals as the Square of Despair for its retro, neglected vibe and horrific public toilet, it features a Coles, some takeout places, a dollar store, a tobacconist and little else.
Melville Road is our beating heart, with businesses scattered along it, mostly hairdressers, cafes, pharmacies and panel beaters. The people who frequent our businesses are mostly locals – or tradies in hi-vis, parking outside Mr Truong's and eating banh mi in their utes at lunchtime. The pace is slower.

Aussie brand that sells 1 product every 30 secs launches in Coles
Aussie beauty fans are already going wild for cult-favourite brand Gem's new launch into Coles, and TikTok is flooded with early sightings and rave reviews. Several products have already sold out in some stores ahead of the official release, meaning the brand has had to bring forward its launch announcement. From July 1, Gem 's popular deodorants and a range of new products will be available in more than 800 Coles stores nationwide. The launch includes new scents of the brand's beloved Skin-Loving Deodorants, which are now joined by Fragrance Body & Hair Mists ($12.50) in signature scents like Coconut Vanilla, Vanilla Macadamia, and Santal. The santal deodorant scent has gone particularly viral in the past for being an affordable 'dupe' of the famous Le Labo Santal 33 perfume, which retails for $382. Two exclusive scents, Roasted Almond & Toffee and Watermelon Fresh, are also available at Coles for the first time and are set to go just as viral. After years of customer requests, Gem has also introduced a Roll-On Deodorant ($5.50) in three scents, each with hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and vitamin E and designed for gentle, everyday use. Excitingly, the brand is also making its debut into grooming with Skin-Loving Shaving Kits ($20), available in two colour sets. Each kit includes a razor infused with hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and aloe vera, plus two blade refills and a holder. Refill packs are available for $22, and the Skin-Loving Shaving Gels ($10) come in the iconic Coconut Vanilla and Vanilla Macadamia scents and make for a luxurious shaving routine. Founder Georgia Danos said the Coles partnership is a huge step for the brand, which started with natural toothpaste in 2020 and has grown into an eight-figure player in everyday beauty essentials. 'Our mission has always been to bring beautified everyday essentials to all Australians, and we are grateful to work with Coles to bring this vision to life,' Ms Danos told She said the brand's launch into the grooming category is a direct response to the 'pink tax' that often comes with women's personal care products. 'It frustrated me that we, as women, should have to pay for something just because it looks cute, yet are expected to compromise on the efficacy of that product,' she said. 'With this range, we wanted ALL the frills, no extra dollar bills. And you can expect a hardworking, 'men's-grade' premium shave that prioritises your skin health and feeling with every use.' Shoppers have already gotten wind of the launch, with countless videos showing people spotting the new Gem products on shelves. Maya Andrejev posted about the body mist, saying she had 'no idea' it existed, and now she plans to wear it every day. Meanwhile, Eleni Karambinas saw the roll-ons on TikTok and headed straight to Coles to buy them. Content creator Saskia Grace described the roll-on as 'so yum' and praised the body mists for their 'gourmand scent', while Holly Turner said she bought two of the mists in case they sold out. Comments on these posts echoed the hype, with shoppers saying they 'need to go ASAP' and that the new launches are 'already going to be my fave'. One TikTok user wrote, 'I just know that they would smell divine'. Ms Danos said that she was overseas at the time all these videos were being posted and her team called her to let her know she had to come home to help bring the launch forward. 'We are lucky enough to have loving fans of the brand who spotted our new products out on shelf in Coles and jumped on socials to share the news,' she said. 'We pulled our launch forward by two weeks and the team had to pivot as it was going viral on TikTok. 'It's a great problem to have when the product you haven't even announced on your own channels, is selling out in multiple stores nationwide! A real pinch me moment and we are so grateful for the response.'

CHOICE survey reveals cheapest supermarket grocery options for Aussies
New research has revealed which of Australia's grocery chains offer the cheapest supplies for Aussies this winter. Consumer group CHOICE recently conducted a detailed survey of 104 supermarkets in 27 locations across the country to identify which stores offered the best prices when it comes to a basket of specific, easy-to-find and commonly purchased groceries. Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA were assessed on their pricing of standard items like full cream milk, carrots, chicken breast fillets and strawberries, as well as winter staples like drinking chocolate, brown onions and garlic. The results were as follows: Aldi: $55.35 Woolworths: $58.92 Coles: $59.92 IGA: $69.64 The price of each chain's basket is updated each quarter. Aldi is still the cheapest and IGA is still the most expensive, but across the board prices have fluctuated slightly per basket. CHOICE CEO Ashley de Silva said Aldi's winter-themed items 'had the best deal for shoppers looking to keep cosy'. 'Without specials, Woolworths had the cheapest chicken breasts and pumpkin,' Mr de Silva said. 'Coles had the best deals on apples. At IGA, you paid less for carrots and garlic than at the other three supermarkets. For all other products, Aldi is your best bet.' 'All up, if you're planning a hearty porridge breakfast, or wanting a cup of hot chocolate to keep you feeling snug, Aldi should be your first stop. 'But, as always, there are lots of other ways to save on your weekly grocery shop. Checking the unit pricing, keeping an eye on specials, shopping around, and trying out house brand products can all add up to significant savings.' Independent Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrrell said the findings were a win for public pressure on grocery companies. 'Aussies said they were fed up with cowboy behaviour and dodgy deals from major supermarkets,' she said. 'After shining a spotlight on their bad habits, this CHOICE report shows prices between ALDI, Coles and Woolworths are much closer than they were a year ago. It's a win for standing up to the big guys.' Senator Tyrrell wants ALDI to set up shop in her home state. 'Once again, CHOICE shows ALDI has cheaper prices than Coles or Woolies, yet ALDI continues to treat Tasmanians like the poor cousins of our mainland counterparts,' she said. 'We have a lack of supermarket competition, we're the state with the lowest wages and Tasmanians are paying the price for it – quite literally. 'I'm just a girl, standing in front of an ALDI, asking you to come to Tasmania.' The ACCC released a report in March that said that while Australia's grocery chains were some of the most profitable in the world, they had not engaged in any form of misconduct or price gouging.
