DRAMA RETURNS Karen Pirie cast: Who appears in the ITV show?
LAUREN Lyle is back for a second series of the Scottish murder-mystery whodunnit Karen Pirie.
The gritty cop drama is produced by Line of Duty bosses and follows Detective Inspector Karen Pirie, freshly promoted after the events of series one.
What is Karen Pirie about?
Based on crime writer Val McDermid's novels, the new series is adapted from the Scottish novelist's 2008 page-turner, A Darker Domain.
The first was based on Val's novel The Distant Echo.
Teenager Rosie Duff was found brutally murdered in the Scottish university town of St Andrews in 1996 and three drunken students were the prime suspects.
In the second season, Karen is put in charge of an infamous cold case from the 80s that has gained fresh scrutiny from senior police, the media, and the victim's relatives.
In 1984, Catriona Grant, the daughter of a wealthy local oil tycoon, was abducted, along with her infant son.
The ransom notes that followed stirred up a huge press storm, but the culprits were never traced and neither Catriona nor her son were seen again.
But when, in the present day, a body is found with an undeniable link to the historic crime, Karen and her team must discover the truth under intense personal and professional pressure.
Here's a look at the case who will be looking at uncovering the truth in the second series of Karen Pirie.

Lauren Lyle as Karen Pirie
Outlander star Lauren Lyle again takes on the role of DC Karen Pirie.
Lauren spent a great deal of time discovering her character with the best-selling author of the book, Val and with a detective she met.
In the books, Karen is unfashionable and odd, and doesn't really mind what she looks like because her main focus is her job.
That is why Lauren worked closely with costume designer Lesley Abernethy to make her look humble but cool at the same time.
To get into character, she also explained how she got to understand the plot and the case like a detective.
She said: "I read the scripts hundreds of times.
"Like a detective, I got huge pieces of paper that I taped together and put on my wall, with details of the whole case.
'It's so complicated that I had to make sure I understood it, so I kept referencing back to this map on my wall.
"There are so many suspects and I had to walk into each scene remembering if Karen really did suspect them or if she secretly trusted them.'
Lauren appeared in Broken, alongside Sean Bean, in 2017, and played Jade Antoniak in Vigil.
She has played Marshall in Outlander since 2017.
Chris Jenks as DC Jason Murray

The Sex Education star is back again.
Portraying DC Jason Murray, Chris explained how his character brings humour to the show and how his relationship with Karen evolves through the episodes.
He said: "Jason is really well-intentioned and good-natured, but just doesn't quite get things right a lot of the time.
"He's desperately trying to hit the mark, but he just misses it.
"He's maybe not the brightest detective on the team, but he kind of makes up for it in his hard work and through his relationship with Karen - they develop into a really good team and she helps him find his stride.
"That relationship builds through the series - at first, they don't really see eye to eye and she's quite frustrated that she's been given such a potentially useless member of the team!
"But he really shows his qualities as they move on and eventually he comes into his own, and really stands up for himself in the later episodes."
Chris explained Jason to be a sort of mummy's boy who loves working out in the gym and enjoys doing basic things in life too such as going out and dating.
Zach Wyatt as DS Phil Parhatka

Zach Wyatt is known for his roles in The Witcher: Blood Origin, Blithe Spirit and Urban Myths.
Now he takes on the role of detective Phil Parhatka, who was supposed to be promoted, but Karen took the position instead.
Zach said: "He's a very diligent, driven detective - this job is all he has ever wanted to do and he's consumed by his work, he takes it very seriously but at a healthy level."

Kory McCrimmon's family meet John Swinney to discuss efforts tackling youth knife crime
"The main purpose of this meeting was to do everything possible so that Kory's death was not in vain." The First Minister has met with the family of a teenager killed by a gang rival in Glasgow to discuss youth knife crime in Scotland. John Swinney promised Kory McCrimmon's family a follow-up meeting to discuss ways to solve youth knife crime in Scotland. The 16-year-old was stabbed in the heart at Greenfield Park in the city's east end in May last year following a feud with a member of a rival gang. The High Court in Glasgow heard that the pair had fallen out over £50 which led to an argument and threads over social media. The youth was convicted of culpable homicide and was sentenced to five years' detention in May. Kory's death was followed by two further knife tragedies just less than 12 months later. Amen Teklay, 15, died after he was found seriously injured on a street in Glasgow's Maryhill on March 5. Three teenage boys, aged 14, 15, and 16, were arrested and charged in connection. Just weeks later, 16-year-old Kayden Moy died following a disturbance at Irvine Beach in Ayrshire on May 17. Two boys, aged 16 and 17, have since appeared in court charged with his murder. All three tragedies have taken place amid the Record's Our Kids ... Our Future campaign, which has repeatedly called on the Scottish Government to invest in children to keep them safe from harm. Our Kids ... Our Future was launched over two years ago in response to a youth violence epidemic. On Wednesday, the First Minister and Justice Secretary Angela Constance met with the teenager's family to discuss youth knife crime. The McCrimmon family called for the meeting to ask the First Minister what could be done to tackle the issue of knife crime, especially amongst young people, and what preventative measures could be put in place. It was requested by the McCrimmon family after they organised a ' Parents Against Knives ' march in Glasgow last month. Around 200 people turned up for the event, which left from outside Rangers' Ibrox Stadium and ended at Celtic's home ground, Celtic Park. During the meeting, the First Minister promised the family, who were joined by Victim Support Scotland, a follow-up meeting to look into the potential solutions in more detail. The family said in a statement: 'The main purpose of this meeting was to do everything possible so that Kory's death was not in vain. 'We really appreciated the chance to meet with the First Minister and Justice Secretary yesterday to talk about their plans to tackle youth knife crime. 'They really listened to our concerns and ideas, and the First Minister suggested having another meeting soon to look at possible solutions in more detail. 'We will hold the First Minister to this promise and to hearing in more detail about what the Scottish Government plans to do to stop more needless deaths caused by knife crime. Kate Wallace, chief executive of Victim Support Scotland, added: 'We welcome the First Minister's commitment to a follow-up meeting with the McCrimmon family. 'This will be vital for solidifying the Scottish Government's commitment to addressing knife crime, especially amongst young people. 'The McCrimmon family took the opportunity yesterday to question the First Minister and Justice Secretary about this issue and what they are doing to stop more preventable deaths. 'We look forward to a swift response from the First Minister in regards to a follow-up meeting with the family. 'It is crucial that action focuses on a joined-up approach to preventing young people from being involved with this type of crime in the first place. 'Everyone has a right to feel safe in their communities. We will continue to advocate on the McCrimmon family's behalf, and on behalf of everyone impacted by knife crime in Scotland.'

Line of Duty star's drama that will 'seize your soul' launches on BBC
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Today marks the day that Jimmy McGovern's highly anticipated latest TV project lands on BBC iPlayer. The new one-part drama, Unforgivable, stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Katherine, an ex-nun and therapist who works at an institution called St Maura's. Anna was introduced as DCS Patricia Carmichael in BBC One's crime drama Line of Duty back in 2019, a character known for her passive aggressive and unpleasant demeanour. In Unforgivable, Katherine works alongside lead character Joe (Bobby Schofield) as he finishes his two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a family member. Brookside star Anna Friel plays Joe's sister, Anna, who is tackling the aftermath of her family's trauma whilst protecting her two sons. Anna's contact with her inmate brother infuriates her father Brian (David Threlfall), who can't stand the fact that she is in contact with her brother, Joe. The Liverpool-set series also features Adolescence child actor Austin Haynes alongside Phina Oruche, Mark Womack and Fin McPartland in his TV debut. As well as being a best-selling author, screenwriter Jimmy has worked on many shows over the years that tackle social issues and injustice. Over the years, he's worked on Channel 4's Brookside, the docudrama Hillsborough and most recently the Bafta award-winning series Time, starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. Speaking to the BBC about his previous work on screen, McGovern said: 'It's got to seize my soul and if it doesn't do that then I won't be able to sit at the computer to write.' A description of Unforgivable reads: 'The Mitchell family deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of sexual abuse committed by a member of their own family who, after two years, is about to leave prison.' When the cast for the series was first confirmed, Jimmy told Radio Times: 'I can't believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production. It's a challenging film, yes, but I can't wait for it to be shown.' The release of Unforgivable comes shortly after Netflix added all four episodes of a 'gripping' spy thriller starring another Line of Duty star. Set in 1886, the drama The Secret Agent follows a man called Verloc (Toby Jones), who owns a sex shop in Victorian-era Soho. More Trending On the side, he's an informer for the Russian embassy tasked with spying on revolutionary groups, with Line of Duty icon Vicky McClurer playing his wife, Winnie. To round out the top of the call sheet, Stephen Graham joins them as the police Chief Inspector Heat. Unforgivable is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two. New Harry Potter attraction launched in iconic Scots movie location

Fans of the book series and movie franchise have long flocked to the north to visit locations featured in the flicks. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 The Scottish landmark was used in four films 5 Harry Potter and his pals travelled on the train to Hogwarts over the viaduct 5 Now bus no. 9 ¾ will take visitors to the village 5 Scots schoolboy Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter in the new HBO series Credit: HBO Glenfinnan Viaduct has been one of the favourites, as the Hogwarts Express travelled across the famous bridge in four of the films. Now a new weekend bus service is being introduced to encourage more of the 600,000 annual visitors to Glenfinnan to leave their cars behind and travel a little more magically. And the bus line has a name inspired by the books, being called no. 9 ¾ - or 934. This is in a nod to Platform 9¾, the magical place Harry and his pals caught the Hogwarts Express when heading for school. According to those behind the bus journey, the service offers a 'spellbinding alternative to driving' with comfy seats and scenic views. The new timetable is part of a community-led effort aimed at helping plug a gap in public transport provision to the tiny village on the shores of Loch Shiel in Lochaber on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a pilot scheme to gauge public appetite for a motor-free day out and help relieve pressure on local car parks, which quickly fill up at this time of year, leading to hazardous kerbside parking and traffic congestion along the famous road to the Isles. The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), Glenfinnan Community Council, Glenfinnan Community Facilities Charitable Trust (SCIO), Glenfinnan Station Museum and HITRANS have each contributed to the cost of the buses. Local authority councillors have also backed the project by supporting an application to The Highland Council's Discretionary Budget, while local bus company, Shiel Buses, will operate the service. Glenfinnan businesses are also offering 'green rewards' as a thank you to those visitors who show them a valid bus or train ticket. Harry Potter legend breaks his silence as replacement cast in HBO TV series These include the NTS Visitor Centre offering a complimentary hot drink, and two-for-one on climbing Glenfinnan Monument, along with a range of other discounts. Kate Forbes MSP commented: "Glenfinnan has become an iconic destination for visitors, with thousands of visitors every year. This has created pressures on local infrastructure, which I have been working to resolve with local residents. 'A few years ago, the community successfully built a much larger car park. However, this has quickly become too small. As such, I have been chairing a task force to identify solutions over the last few years. HOW TO GET THERE THE summer weekend bus service will run four times a day at the weekends, between Fort William and Glenfinnan, from now until September 7. It is just one of many train and bus services that travel to Glenfinnan seven days a week. Visitors will be able to get on the Glenfinnan weekend bus at Fort William bus station, Lochaber High School (free parking available at weekends), Kilmallie Hall in Corpach and Linnhe Caravan Park. Times for the new service, along with timetables and prices for all other buses and trains, can be found in the 'Guide to visiting Glenfinnan without a Car.' This can be viewed and downloaded from 'I am delighted to see a new solution to get more people out of their cars. This will hopefully be transformational, as more visitors choose to share transport. 'I am enormously grateful to all the key stakeholders – The Highland Council, HITRANS, Shiel Buses, National Trust for Scotland and every local resident that has been helping drive this forward.'
