
‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' Patch Slams Maelle Build With 70% Nerf

Sometimes a build in a game is so broken that even a single player, PvE-only title is going to be forced to act. And now, a promised patch has gone live for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that severely nerfs the game's best build, a Maelle one-shot that can instantly kill anything in the game, even its hardest boss.
And it still may not be enough.
In the patch notes, there are two separate nerfs to this build, centered around one sword and one skill that are key to its use:
Medalum is the sword used in this build because it starts you in Virtuose stance, a 200% damage multiplier at baseline, and Stendhal is the one-shot skill you execute in conjunction with a zillion other buffs.

The end result of this, at least in my own testing in a 1v1 versus Golgra is that this works out to a 70% nerf of the Maelle build's damage, the sword nerf combining with the Stendhal nerf. My results were:
So that damage is 30% of what it was equating to a 70% nerf. But as I said, depending how this shakes out, it may not be enough.
This is not my maxed build, as with other heroes and buffs I don't have fully active, I think my record is 67 million. The second phase of the hardest boss in the game has him with about 50-60 million health, so 30% of my 67 million would be 20 million, and with damage plummeting after the first hit, I'd have a relatively normal fight on my hands. But every other boss? I think nearly all of them would still fall to that 20 million.
That said, this build has gone insane places with some variants. If you hit a 100 million that's 30 million in damage, so no one shot for that guy. But we have seen versions of this that reach 3-4 billion in damage with the right multipliers. I'm not sure if that's exactly a 30% nerf with those ultra-optimized builds, but to get that down to 50 million from 3 billion, you would need closer to an 85% nerf, not 70%. But I don't think the vast majority of players have what it takes to reach that high as you need an insane amount of buffs and Pictos to get there.
This is warranted, even in a single player RPG. I can understand why Sandfall would not want players to somewhat easily skip the entire endgame with damage this high to be able to one-shot all enemies, even the final boss. And given how hard some of those bosses are, this is now going to be very hard if you can only partially chunk them, especially the final boss of the endgame. But a lot of other bosses and enemies? Yeah, you can still probably obliterate them, even with this nerf. Here's the build.

Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has called the Japan-exclusive edition of the Nintendo Switch 2 an "amazing business decision." Worlds collided recently as former PlayStation head Shuhei Yoshida joined forces with Nintendo of America's former marketing leads Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang on an episode of their podcast. They spoke about their time working at the respective companies, with the topic of the rivalry between the DS and the PSP naturally coming up during the conversation. Despite being a player for the other team, Yoshida was extremely positive about the Switch 2, especially the Japanese-only edition that costs $110 less than the worldwide edition, with the caveat that you'll only be able to play Japanese region Nintendo games on it. Yoshida said the direction from Nintendo was "mind boggling," but an "amazing business decision." "I do not necessarily think other companies like PlayStation would emulate what they did," he added. "It doesn't make sense to me, you know, selling the same thing for such a different price for other consumers." Yoshida notes "it's clearly showing they want to keep the strong hold in Japan that they already have… that's an amazing decision they have made." Handhelds are an extremely strong market in Japan, and pretty much always have been. It's the reason Monster Hunter was pretty much a handheld-exclusive series for so long before the series took off worldwide. So Nintendo offering a cheaper way to get more handheld systems out to Japanese consumers is arguably a good plan, even if selling a console at a significant regional discount at launch is, as Yoshida said, "mind boggling." Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch 2 made two tiny changes that break it wide open for Zelda speedrunners – a strategy so hard "only a few people in the whole world can do it" is suddenly a lot easier.

Here's what a Nintendo superfan says about the new Switch 2
Nintendo's new Switch 2 is already off to a strong start – selling over 3.5 million consoles in just its first four days. I've been testing it out to see what's new and how it compares to the original. The Switch 2 builds on what made the original so popular – portability, flexibility, and a huge library of great games. But it adds a bunch of smart upgrades. First off, the screen is bigger. So is the unit itself – but it's still manageable to hold. The controllers now attach magnetically instead of sliding in, and that in itself is a big improvement. 'On this one it's just like a nice little snap and you're done,' said Nintendo fan Henry Mayhew, who helped me put the Switch 2 through its paces. He bought his console on day one. The dock is redesigned and adds to the system's versatility. You can play on your TV in up to 4K, take it on the go for HD graphics, or prop it up tabletop style. The controllers even work like a mouse now. Buttons feel better, the software runs faster, and graphics, haptics, and sound are all improved. 'The graphics are definitely improved and then it's more engaging to play' said Mayhew. Another big upgrade is game sharing. Downloadable titles now act as virtual game cards, which means you can share them with friends or use them across profiles. 'It's really nice not having the other person to have to have the game for you to be able to play it with them,' Mayhew said. One standout new feature is GameChat. It lets you voice chat while playing, and even plug in a USB-C camera. There's a new 'C' button to activate it. It's free through March 2026, and kids under 16 will need parental controls enabled to use it. 'I mean it's pretty fun…' said Mayhew. The only real downside? Battery life. 'Controllers… those will last you a decade,' said Mayhew. 'But then the battery life on the Switch 2… that only lasts 2–6 hours, and for me personally, it only lasts 3 hours before I have to dock it or plug it in again.'
