Beloved Capcom JRPG Comes To GOG Preservation Program After 25 Years

The GOG Preservation Program is an initiative ran by PC game storefront GOG (Good Old Games) that endeavors to preserve classic games for modern PC hardware so they're always playable and accessible—even when the original developers no longer support them. Today, the program is receiving a beloved new addition from one of Capcom's most popular dormant franchises: Breath of Fire. Finally, Breath of Fire IV is playable on modern PC hardware.
Breath of Fire IV originally released on PS1 in 2000 and was eventually ported to PC a few years later. The game, just like others in the series, follows Ryu, on a sweeping adventure that spans a fantastical world full of magic, dragon powers, princesses, and more. This is a classic-style turn-based JRPG that a lot of genre fans adore.
Notably, Breath of Fire IV has a unique art style that blends pixel art characters with fully rendered 3D backgrounds and a mixture of pixel art and 3D polygonal enemies. It creates a really interesting juxtaposition that still looks unique to this day.

In terms of improvements, keep in mind this is more or less a port that's updated to run well on modern PCs but should not be considered a remaster. There are some minor updates and bug fixes though, like support for modern controllers, full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11, improved DirectX rendering, windowed mode, and more.
There hasn't been a new Breath of Fire game from Capcom since Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter on PS2 in 2002, unless you count the mobile-only free-to-play spin-off from a few years ago. So far, this has been a really great year for fans of classic JRPGs.

Sony Helldivers 2 first launched on PC and PS5 in February 2024, where it immediately became a huge success among critics and players. Despite some post-launch hiccups, with player backlash arising from a PlayStation login requirement on PC added after launch, the game went on to sell over 15 million copies and win dozens of awards, including Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2024. In the year and change since its release, it's also received a swathe of post-launch content, including expansions and regular in-game events, all of which has been well-received by the community. It's also been praised for its emergent storytelling, with actions from the community helping shape the overall story of the game. Helldivers 2 will be available in two editions on Xbox Series X|S, a standard edition costing $39.99 and a deluxe "Super Citizen Edition" coming in at $59.99, which includes an armor set, a cape, a weapon, Super Citizen status, and a Stratagem Hero Ship Game. Both are available to preorder on the Xbox store now, and preordering offers three promotional armor sets. "We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game," Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson said in a post on Xbox Wire. Curiously, the game is launching on the same date as one of Xbox's in-house games, Gears of War Reloaded, which is coming to Xbox, PC, and PS5. It comes after Microsoft cancelled multiple Xbox games amid aggressive layoffs that have seen 9000 staff laid off across the company, many of which were under the Microsoft Gaming and Xbox Game Studios banner. Helldivers 2 Drops Free PS5, PC DLC for Existing Players
Arrowhead Game Studios dropped free DLC for PS5 and PC players, and it's not something we usually expect from devs. All existing players have been granted the new 'Pillars of Freedom' commemorative cape for the biggest controversy surrounding the game. Not long after Helldivers 2's release, Sony decided to make it mandatory for PC players to have a PSN account in order to play the game. The move resulted in swift backlash as players from countries with no official PSN support were unable to link just any PSN account to Steam that didn't match the region they were in, essentially locking them out of purchasing the game. Sony's response? Removing the controversial requirement from Helldivers 2 but subsequently pulling its first-party games from hundreds of countries where PSN isn't available including some major PC gaming markets. Fast forward to today, Sony no longer requires a PSN account to play its games on PC and is slowly removing the region lock barring hundreds and thousands of players from accessing its games. But speaking specifically about Helldivers 2, Arrowhead decided to issue the free cape in honor of players' 'unquestioning commitment to the defense of Managed Democracy.' Backyard Baseball 2001 Game Returns With 28 Original MLB Stars
Backyard Baseball '01 is set to re-launch next week on PC and mobile devices, featuring MLB marks and 28 of the 31 players who appeared in the original version, the franchise's new owners announced Monday. The Backyard Sports series has been revived under the Playground Productions label after extensive efforts to track down the rights to the groundbreaking PC titles and redevelop the original code. Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett said the team reached former Marlin Álex González through players he's currently coaching, for instance. '2001 is already some time ago, and some of these players don't live in the U.S. Some of them don't have managers or agents or social media,' she said. 'So we got creative.' In general, Barnett said, players were eager to lend their IP rights once again. In some cases, they leapt at the opportunity to show their kids, or grandkids, how big of a star they once were. Three players ultimately declined to participate this time around: Ken Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas and Barry Bonds. Bonds—notably—has not appeared in MLB video games since opting out of the MLB Players Association licensing agreement in 2003. 'They really love this brand.' She added that the league recognizes how valuable the original releases were to the sport's efforts to grow. 'There were actually kids who learned about baseball through a very simple point-and-click game,' Barnett said. 'Now that we get to bring it back, we can start to capture even more kids who can become baseball fans for life.' Recently released versions, including Backyard Baseball '97 and Backyard Soccer '98, have found success on gaming platform Steam and iOS, largely by entertaining nostalgic millennials, including those hoping to share their childhood favorites with a new generation.
