Badminton and shooting added to NAS Sports Tournament roster
The Higher Organizing Committee of NAS Sports Tournament has ratified the programme of the various competitions of the 12th edition of the Tournament.
NAS Sports Tournament will be held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the UAE, and organized as per the directives of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Chairman of Dubai Sports Council.
NAS Sports Tournament is the biggest of its kind and the most eminent community sports event that takes place at Nad Al-Sheba Sports Complex during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Participants in the 12th edition of the Tournament will compete in 11 disciplines including volleyball, padel, jujitsu, fencing, wheelchair basketball, running, cycling, tug of war, obstacle challenge. The two competitions added to the tournament are badminton and shooting.
The tournament aims to provide a comprehensive sports platform that brings together athletes in various sports, comprising people of determination, and different classes of society, allowing them all to enjoy unique opportunity to exercise sports during the Holy Month of Ramadan in distinctive & competitive atmospheres that enhance the spirit of interaction & positivity and cement the concept of sport as a way of life.
Hassan Al Mazrouei, the Tournament's Manager, emphasized the Organizing Committee's keenness to select sports competitions that conform to the promising sports and community goals, set by Sheikh Hamdan, and overseen by Sheikh Mansoor.
He explained that over the past 11 editions, the tournament has contributed to the development of several sports games, and it has also presented various competitions that enriched the sports sector and contributed to the enhancement of the status of various sports & competitions, which are followed by fans in UAE and overseas, and held with distinctive participation of elite of the best ranked global athletes.
He added that the increase in the number of sports competitions and the attracting of further amateurs and professionals to participate in the tournament reflect the eminent & growing role of the event in supporting the sports sector and boosting Dubai's sports community.
'These factors also confirm the annual dramatic increase in the numbers of events & participants, as the Tournament has witnessed, throughout the last versions, remarkable participation of 51 thousand amateur and professional athletes from UAE and overseas who competed in 88 competitions of various sports.
He remarked: "We are pleased to raise the number of sports in the 12th edition of the Tournament into 11 sports, including many Olympic and popular sports. The Organizing Committee is keen to add Olympic games with international participation, providing players with valuable opportunities to compete versus international athletes and acquire new experiences. We will soon extend invitations to athletes and teams to participate in the various competitions of the tournament."

The UAE is all set to host the T20 Asia Cup in September after organisers announced the schedule for the tournament, ending speculation on the fate of the event following tensions between India and Pakistan. The subcontinent neighbours had been locked in a diplomatic standoff since an intense four-day conflict earlier in the year. A quick ceasefire was announced between the countries but India announced it remained on high alert. India also announced the suspension of most bilateral ties, leading to concerns over the Asia Cup. The South Asian rivals have not played any bilateral series since 2012 and only play each other in international tournaments on neutral grounds as part of a compromise deal. However, even that seemed unlikely this time, until an agreement was reached recently, clearing the path for India's participation in the Asia Cup. Late on Saturday, Asian Cricket Council and Pakistan cricket chief Mohsin Naqvi announced the dates for the tournament that will take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28. The venues for the matches will be announced at a later date. 'I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE,' Naqvi posted on platform X. 'The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9 to 28.' India and Pakistan are in Group A with Oman and hosts UAE. Group B comprises of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The top two from each group will qualify for the Super 4 stage where all four teams will play against each other. The top two teams will then go through to the final. Pakistan and India are favourites to qualify from Group A. The tournament could potentially see three matches between the rivals, if they qualify for the final. The five full members of the ACC – Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka – earned automatic qualification to the tournament. They were joined by Hong Kong, Oman and the UAE who secured their spots by finishing in the top three of the ACC men's Premier Cup. The Asia Cup is being seen as preparation for the T20 World Cup early next year, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. The Asia Cup tournament is held in ODI and T20 formats. India are the defending champions, having beaten Sri Lanka in the final of the previous edition in 2023. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, won the Asia Cup when it was last played in the T20 format in 2022 after they beat Pakistan in the final. The UAE, meanwhile, will be confident of putting up a good show. They are on a roll in the T20 format, having recently defeated a strong Bangladesh team in Sharjah. They are currently competing in the Pearls of Africa T20 Cup in Uganda. The UAE, captained by Muhammad Waseem, have won four out of five matches in the tournament so far. In their latest clash, the UAE beat Nigeria by 53 runs, dismissing their opponents for 88 after posting 141-5. Exclusive: Cricket administrators Falaknaz, Abbas recall how Asia Cup was born in UAE

It is being reshared in light of the ACC's announcement that the 2025 Asia Cup will be held in UAE from September 9-28.] Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, the Chairman of Dubai Cricket Council, says his heart swells with pride when he reflects on how the Asia Cup was born in this country. Even before Sharjah became the most sought-after neutral cricket venue in the world, two Emiratis had played a big role in forming the Asian Cricket Council. 'I am very proud to say that when we formed the Asian Cricket Council in Delhi, the UAE was the only country that had two representatives. There was Mr Bukhatir from the Sharjah Cricket Council and I was from the Dubai Cricket Council. We were also helped by Mr Arif Abbasi, who was the chief of Pakistan Cricket Board. It was a fantastic day,' Falaknaz told Khaleej Times. Few people know that the Asian Cricket Council's first office was also set up at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. 'We took the opportunity to host the first Asian Cricket Council meeting in Sharjah. In that meeting, I remember clearly that we decided to have the Asia Cup. So that's how the Asia Cup started and it has been a fantastic tournament,' Falaknaz said. Falaknaz, who first played cricket with his friends in the UAE in 1958, now can't wait for the big clash between India and Pakistan on Sunday. 'It's fantastic, it's good for tourism in the country. We have people coming in from all over the world because they don't see a lot of these India-Pakistan matches any more. These two teams only play in the World Cups and the Asia Cups. They don't play bilateral matches any more, so everybody is eagerly waiting to see the match,' he said. 'They are likely to face in the Super Four as well and who knows both could meet in the final too. So there could be three India-Pakistan matches in the UAE this time. This is really exciting. 'And I feel very proud as an Emirati to be able to host such strong tournaments in the UAE.' We received great support from India and Pakistan, says Abbas The UAE, which is gearing up to host the Asia Cup for the fourth time, would not have seen so much success in cricket without the support from India and Pakistan. Mohammad Redha Abbas, the vice-chairman of the Dubai Cricket Council, paid tribute to the BCCI and the PCB. 'The Indian and the Pakistan cricket boards supported us and we were able to hold the first meeting of the Asian Cricket Council. Without the support of those cricket boards, we would not have been able to host the first Asia Cup here,' Abbas told Khaleej Times. The former UAE selector said the India-Pakistan clashes added an element of magic to the cricket tournaments in Sharjah. 'Seeing those matches in our country for the first time was an amazing experience. Before that we had only a Gavaskar XI vs Miandad XI exhibition match and a double wicket tournament,' he recalled. 'After the 1984 Asia Cup, ICC recognised us and Sharjah started hosting tournaments every year and became one of the most popular tournaments in the world. "But again, we have to thank India and Pakistan for that. If they had not sent their teams, our tournaments would not have become so big.'
