Empowering women: SASSA expands leadership training initiative

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has officially launched the fourth intake of its Women in Leadership Development Programme, a strategic initiative designed to strengthen gender representation and leadership capacity within the public service. Launched on June 24, the programme will see 120 women in middle and senior management positions undergo six months of leadership training. The goal is to empower women with the strategic, emotional, and operational skills required to succeed in complex government environments. The initiative focuses on areas such as strategic leadership, emotional intelligence, people management, and self-awareness, providing participants with tools to excel and lead with purpose. Sassa CEO Themba Matlou, in his keynote address, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to gender transformation. 'It is not a favour; it is an obligation. We must create space and provide resources for women to lead. Our data shows we are doing well at entry levels, but numbers drop at the top. That must change,' said Matlou. He emphasised that leadership development, particularly for women, is integral to Sassa's broader five-year strategy, which includes improving organisational efficiency, enhancing service delivery and reducing poverty. 'An organisation has the responsibility to train, empower and motivate its people. Well-equipped staff translates into improved customer experiences and stronger community impact,' he added. The programme is part of Sassa's drive to create a diverse, inclusive and effective leadership pipeline, ensuring the agency continues to serve South Africans with integrity and professionalism. Matlou encouraged participants to see themselves as catalysts for transformation. 'Each of you represents a step toward a future where women's leadership is the norm, not the exception. Your participation signals change – for yourselves, for this agency and for the people we serve.' As Youth Month draws to a close, Sassa's investment in developing women leaders sends a strong message that inclusive leadership is not just policy – it's a national imperative. Coin-It scheme trio back in court again this month

Three members of the De Beer family (who formed the now-infamous Coin-It investment scheme) were back in court last week, only to have their case postponed to July 25. This is to allow the defence to file a further affidavit regarding their application for documents. Malcolm de Beer (54), Patricia de Beer (53) and Samantha de Beer (31) – all of Dundee – are charged with fraud (with the alternative charge of theft) to the amount of approximately R73.6 million. They are also charged with contravention of the Financial Advisory & Intermediary Services Act, the Banks Act, and money laundering. The trio are out on R50,000 bail. Coin-It promised starry-eyed investors riches that would lead them on their 'route to success'. While many who poured money into the scheme accrued riches beyond their wildest dreams, hundreds more lost their hard-earned money when the Dundee-based pyramid scheme came crashing down, leaving many distraught.
