BBMP employees go on one-day mass leave over staff crisis, various pending demands
The protesting BBMP employees have gathered at Freedom Park near the BBMP head office raising serious concerns over the worsening staff crisis within the BBMP, and pointing out that more than 6,000 posts remain vacant across departments. With civic services under strain, the association has accused the administration of forcing the existing workforce to endure excessive pressure. It has also alleged that several employees have been suspended without prior notice, despite repeated appeals for intervention and relief.
At the heart of the protest is the demand for immediate withdrawal of the Logsafe attendance system, which the association claims is unfeasible for non-executive staff, including clerical employees. The employees are also demanding urgent recruitment to fill vacant positions, an end to what they describe as unjust disciplinary proceedings against school principals and headmasters within the BBMP Education Department, and stricter adherence to administrative roles for senior officials without additional sectoral responsibilities.
In addition, the association is seeking immediate promotions for architects across various ranks, continuation of e-property services for property-related transactions in the Revenue Department, repatriation of officers and employees serving on what they term as 'illegal deputation' back to their parent departments, and time-bound promotions for eligible staff across all categories.
They are also pressing for the extension of government health insurance schemes such as Jyoti Sanjeevini to BBMP employees, the finalisation of long-pending seniority lists, issuance of user IDs and passwords to 'B' grade health supervisors for business license operations, and abolition of marshal posts, which they claim are functioning without legal sanction.
Municipal employees across Karnataka have gone on mass leave for the second consecutive day and gathered at Freedom Park under the banner of the Karnataka State Municipal Corporation Employees' Union Council over longstanding demands.
The strike has disrupted civic services across major cities including Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Tumkur, Shivamogga, Belagavi and Davanagere.
The striking municipal employees have demanded immediate release of allowances under the 7th Pay Commission, similar to the benefits extended to state government employees. They are also seeking amendments to recruitment rules, inclusion in government health insurance schemes, permission to participate in annual sports meets held for state employees, and long-overdue promotions in various cadres.

BBMP employees withdraw strike after recent suspensions promised to be rolled back, services affected on Tuesday
Employees of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) went on a strike on Tuesday, affecting civic services in Bengaluru throughout the day. Revenue, Education, and Health departments were the most affected by the strike, which was withdrawn later in the evening, after Chief Civic Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao promised to withdraw the suspensions of eight revenue officials, suspended over alleged dereliction of duty during the Scheduled Castes Survey. Solid waste management remained unaffected. Mallamma, who works as a domestic help in Rajajinagar area, said that her mother-in-law had fallen ill and she had taken her to the nearest BBMP hospital, but doctors had been to a protest. Madhav Rao, a resident of Vidyaranyapura and a senior citizen, said he had been to the BBMP office to meet the assistant revenue officer (ARO) over an e-khata query, but the office was deserted. Meanwhile, classes were not properly held in most of the BBMP-run schools and colleges as teachers were also participating in the strike. The BBMP headquarters in N.R. Square of the city also wore a deserted look as most of the employees were part of the strike. Suralkar Vikas Kishor, Special Commissioner (West Zone), faced the heat from BBMP employees who alleged he tried to stop employees from participating in the strike. However, he clarified that he had told only two employees — an office assistant and a driver — not to go for the protest, to keep the office running, and said he was not against the strike. Mr. Rao visited Freedom Park, where the BBMP employees were protesting and assured them of withdrawing the suspension orders of eight revenue officers. Responding to other demands — BBMP should fill 6,000 posts, give promotions to BBMP direct recruits, cancel employing Marshals in the city — the Commissioner promised the employees that he will soon take up these issues with the State government. Following this, the strike was called off. A. Amrutraj, president, BBMP Employees' and Engineers' Welfare Association, which led the strike, said that with the suspensions withdrawn and assurance to positively consider their other demands, they had decided to call off the strike and return to work on Wednesday.

The protest began this morning at the Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Employees of the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), along with staff from various municipal corporations across the state, took leave from work to participate in the protest at Freedom Park here. Ten municipal corporations in the State were shut down today. Additionally, employees took mass leave to participate in the protest. Among the list of demands of the employees include the withdrawal of the Logsafe attendance system, filling up of 6,000 vacant posts and an end to the 'suspension of employees for silly reasons.' They are also demanding a reduction in the number of marshals on duty, and promotions for engineers based on seniority, among others. 'Our corporation provides all services from birth to death, so we are demanding facilities from the state government, including KGID, General Provident Fund and Jyothi Sanjeevini Scheme. We also demand C&R in promotions. We have consulted ministers in the government,' a participant at the protest said. Another participant, named Rajiv said that the corporation employees don't feel a part of the government of Karnataka. 'They are treating us as a semi-government. When we came here with the completion of the KVC (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan), why are we not considered a part of it?' He further said, 'Once Grampanchayat is upgraded into Pattan Panchayat, it becomes semi-governmental. However, if one remains a part of Grampanchayat, then they remain to be a part of the government. How is that fair?.' 'Our main demand is that we all should be considered as government employees. We should also get all the benefits,' he said. (ANI)
