Petronas: Sarawak illegal operations claim baseless
In a statement today, Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) clarified that the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 has expressly granted exclusive rights to Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to regulate all petroleum-related activities in Malaysia, including Sarawak.
'Based on this fact, Petronas should not require any licence or permit from the Sarawak State Government to carry out any operations involving petroleum in the state,' Armada Bersatu said.
Petronas today confirmed to Bernama that its subsidiary, PCSB, received a notice last Wednesday from the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications regarding gas processing and distribution.
The state-owned oil company told Bernama that PCSB was authorised by law under the PDA 1974 to carry out the company's activities and comply with all applicable laws in doing so.
'While we respect the aspirations of the state of Sarawak, Petronas also has an obligation to uphold the PDA 1974 and safeguard the interests of the country.
'Petronas will continue to engage constructively and work closely with the Federal government, Sarawak government and Petros in exploring future arrangements to ensure regulatory clarity and continuity of operations for the benefit of the industry, the state and the country as a whole,' the company said.

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has established a Transition Council and a Human Capital Development Committee aimed at coordinating a fair and structured redeployment of staff following the company's organisational restructuring. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a written reply uploaded on the Parliament's website, said that affected employees would receive a competitive separation package as well as comprehensive support through a transition programme. This includes career guidance, emotional support, upskilling, financial planning, and job relocation assistance through collaboration with the Social Security Organisation, government-linked companies, and Petronas' entrepreneurial initiatives. 'These measures are part of Petronas' transformation strategy to enhance resilience and competitiveness in facing the energy transition era. 'They are strategically designed so as not to affect Petronas' contribution to national revenue or the continuity of national development policies,' she said. Azalina was responding to a question from Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai) regarding the government's response to Petronas' decision to reduce over 5,000 of its workforce due to the company's restructuring and the impact on its contribution to national income. In another development, in response to a question from Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem (GPS-Serian) on the current status of overlapping powers between Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) in Sarawak, Azalina informed that a Joint Declaration signed on May 21, 2025 serves as the foundation for the formation of a joint framework between Petronas and Petros. Through the declaration, Petronas will continue to carry out its roles and responsibilities as provided under the Petroleum Development Act 1974, including from upstream sector activities up to the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to international markets. Apart from that, Petros has been appointed by the Sarawak state government as the gas aggregator for the state's domestic market, effective March 1, 2025. This appointment will be respected by all industry players involved in the distribution and supply of gas to domestic consumers.

Scheduled load shedding to impact Sabah, Labuan from Aug 1-7
KOTA KINABALU: A load shedding operation will be carried out in Sabah and Labuan from Aug 1 to Aug 7 due to scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis, Papar. These works carried out by PETRONAS will impact over 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan, said Sabah Electricity Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar at a press conference here on Wednesday (July 30). He said maintenance works on offshore and onshore platforms would result in the gas supplies to the two Independent Power Producers (IPP) in Kimanis being disconnected. These two IPPs are the Kimanis Power plant (255MW) and SPRE power plant (100MW), he said. Yaakob said they did not foresee any power disruptions in the initial phase of discussions with PETRONAS and the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) earlier this year. However, based on information received on Tuesday (July 29), it was found that the power plants were unable to operate using alternative fuel, and this resulted in the need to load the shed, he said. He said a total of 195MW of power will be lost in the Sabah grid system for this seven-day period, which explains the load shedding from Aug 1 to Aug 7. Yaakob said that if possible, he hoped PETRONAS could postpone the maintenance works at SOGT until the generation capacity stabilises, so that there would be no power supply disruptions. 'This measure is needed to ensure stability in Sabah's electricity system. If maintenance works were put on hold, then the people of Sabah will have some relief,' he said. He said the load shedding process would be inconvenient to users in Sabah and Labuan, especially during peak hours between 10am and 10pm, where each area would have no supply for an hour or two, on a rotation basis. Yaakob said Sabah Electricity would work closely with all stakeholders, especially the IPPs and ECoS, to monitor the situation while taking proactive measures to reduce power disruptions. He urged the public to get more information on the load shedding schedule, which includes time, date and area affected via the Sabah Electricity Facebook page and the Sabah Electricity application.

SE urges SOGT maintenance postponement to avoid major power cuts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE) has requested Petronas to postpone scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) to avoid large-scale electricity rationing affecting around 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan. SE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the planned rotation-based rationing is expected to run from this Friday until 7 August across the state and Labuan. He explained that initial arrangements had anticipated no supply disruption, following earlier discussions with Petronas and the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos). However, he said new information received on Tuesday revealed that the system could not operate on alternative fuel as expected, potentially reducing grid capacity by 195 Megawatts for seven days. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mohd Yaakob said further talks with Petronas would be held later in the day to explore the possibility of delaying the maintenance until capacity stabilises. He added that postponing the works would help ease the situation, as scheduled outages would otherwise affect users during peak hours from 10am to 10pm, lasting one to two hours each time.
