YouTuber from China fined RM800 for trespassing Parliament grounds
Magistrate MS Arunjothy meted out the sentence on 25-year-old Li Zhechen after he pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the Parliament grounds, which are designated as a restricted area under Section 5(1) of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959.
He committed the offence at 5.30 pm on July 9 and was charged under Section 7 of the same Act, which carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both.
According to the facts of the case, Li entered the compound to take photos and videos. On-duty police officers then detained him.
Deputy public prosecutor Adiba Iman Md Hassan earlier urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent to the accused and the public.
Li's lawyer, Lee Ewe Kiang, pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying his client was remorseful and had no intention of trespassing into a restricted area.
'On the day of the incident, my client, who was visiting Malaysia as a tourist, had been walking around Perdana Botanical Gardens before accidentally entering the nearby Parliament grounds.

Comptroller of the Perak Royal Household Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik, in a statement, said that the police report was lodged on July 31. Meor Hezbullah clarified that neither a royal wedding nor a live broadcast will take place on Aug 7. 'The Office of His Royal Highness neither recognises nor is connected to the TikTok account owner and has not appointed anyone as an official spokesperson for palace events, including royal weddings. 'The Office stresses that the content shared by the TikTok account is completely false and may cause public confusion,' he added. Previously, a TikTok user under the name 'The King' had uploaded a 58-second video on the social media platform, claiming that a royal wedding would be held at Istana Iskandariah Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, from August 7 to 17. The footage also alleged that the solemnisation ceremony would be broadcast live on a local television station on Aug 7 at 11.30 am. Police to submit Zara Qairina case file to AGC today
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has reportedly said that police will submit their investigation paper on the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today. 'The investigation paper into the case has been completed, and it will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor today, insya-Allah,' he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini. According to the report, the AGC is expected to issue a press statement on the matter later today. On Saturday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that police had concluded their probe, with around 60 witness statements recorded during the course of the investigation. Zara, a Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah, was found critically injured in a drain beneath her school dormitory in the early hours of July 16, after reportedly falling from the third floor. She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Her body was buried on July 17 without a post-mortem, prompting her mother to seek legal steps to exhume the grave for an autopsy, amid public concern and questions over the cause of death.

Reward whistleblowers to combat ‘counter setting' and border corruption, says Deputy Speaker
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor has proposed that the government offer covert incentives to civil servants who expose internal misconduct at immigration entry points, including practices such as 'counter setting,' to curb corruption at the country's borders. Ramli suggested that whistleblowers with inside information on manipulation or abuse of power should be rewarded under administrative rules or legal provisions. 'Why not consider giving rewards, like giving them a thousand ringgit or two thousand covertly? This is done in criminal investigations. It could work in this case too,' he said in the Dewan Rakyat today. He said only those directly involved or close to such misconduct would have access to such information. 'Nothing is ever exposed unless the information comes from those directly involved or their close associates,' he said. 'This isn't about betraying friends, it's about protecting the country and the people,' he added. During the same session, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the government is ramping up efforts to stamp out border manipulation tactics such as counter setting, flying passports, phantom travellers and U-turns, describing them as acts that severely damage the credibility of Malaysia's immigration and border control agencies. He said measures being implemented include digitalisation, the use of body-worn cameras, advanced passenger screening systems, and integrity awareness programmes. Saifuddin said 635 autogates will be installed at 123 national entry points under the Entry/Exit Gateway Processing System (EGPS), including at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2, the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex, the Sultan Iskandar Building, and airports in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Penang. The rollout is expected to be completed by March 2028. 'These autogates will reduce direct officer interaction, as screenings will rely on biometric data, facial recognition and iris scans,' he said. Saifuddin also said immigration officers at major entry points, particularly KLIA, are currently undergoing a proof-of-concept phase for body-worn cameras. The ministry plans to deploy 614 units by September to enhance transparency and prevent misconduct. He added that Malaysia will soon implement an Advanced Passenger Screening System and an Advanced Passenger Information (API) system in partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysia Airports Berhad and the Aviation Security Force. The API pilot will begin with 10 of the 56 airlines operating in Malaysia by the end of this year, allowing authorities to access detailed passenger data before arrival and strengthen pre-emptive screening efforts. According to Saifuddin, 26 officers were dismissed in 2024 and eight in 2023 under Section 37 of the public service regulations, all involving serious misconduct. Separately, 50 other cases involving phantom manipulation were referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), with two individuals already charged in court. He reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy in addressing such abuses.
