Tourism sector still big earner for Sabah, says Hajiji

The Star19-06-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Tourism continues to be a pillar of Sabah's economy, contributing significantly to both state revenue and rural community development, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
The sector, the Chief Minister added, generated RM13.1bil for Sabah in 2023, accounting for 15% of the state's gross domestic product (GDP).
'Yet, statistics alone do not tell the whole story. Behind each number lies a livelihood, a family and individuals who have contributed to the tourism economy,' he said in his speech at the launching of the Asean Travel Exchange (Atex 2025) here on Thursday (June 19).
His speech was delivered by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
Hajiji highlighted that the real strength of Sabah's tourism lay in its expanding community-based tourism sector, which had seen impressive growth, particularly in rural districts.
'In 2024, revenue from this sector reached RM7mil, spanning 18 districts. These initiatives are led by local individuals and families, crafting experiences that are authentically Sabahan,' he said, saying that the state government views tourism not just as an economic engine but as a tool for uplifting communities.
To support the sector's growth, he said Sabah was investing in infrastructure improvements, including ongoing upgrades at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, better road access to rural areas and improved digital platforms to promote visitor experiences.
'We are laying the groundwork for a resilient, future-ready tourism economy. Our strategy includes embracing green principles, pushing digital transformation, and strengthening Sabah's role as a premier host of international tourism events,' he said.
He also envisioned Sabah as a 'peace hub', a harmonious space where business, nature, culture and heritage thrive side-by-side through sustainable development.
'We aspire to be a model showing how tourism can flourish while preserving the very things that make us unique … our environment, our cultures, and our communities,' he said.
Hajiji also described Atex 2025 as a significant milestone that allowed Sabah to position itself not only as a top destination but also as a strategic partner in shaping Asean's tourism future.
'Hosting Atex 2025 is an honour, but more importantly, it is an opportunity. A chance to spark connections, explore business ventures, and collectively shape a more inclusive and sustainable tourism future for the region,' he said.
Meanwhile, Liew described Atex 2025 as a golden opportunity for Sabah.
'This is a wonderful programme. Just imagine, top tourism leaders from all 10 Asean countries gathered here in Sabah, with over 500 delegates. I truly thank the organisers for making this possible,' she told the media after the launch ceremony.
She added that this was likely the first time all 10 Asean nations had convened for a tourism-focused event in Kota Kinabalu.
'This is our moment to showcase Sabah as a strategic and unique tourist destination. I believe it will open new doors for collaboration and regional promotion,' she said.
Liew also shared encouraging tourism statistics for 2025, where so far, Sabah has welcomed over one million tourists between January and April, an 18% increase from the same period last year, generating more than RM2bil in revenue.
She expressed optimism that Sabah would meet its target of 3.5mil visitors by year-end.
When asked if Sabah would consider hosting Atex again, she responded positively: 'If there is a request, we are more than willing. Let's make it a signature event for Sabah, and maybe our guests can stay an extra week or two to explore our beautiful destinations.'

Safeguard against fake participation in oil and gas: Non-Sabahan companies using drivers, cleaners as equity holders

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 Text Size: Masidi pointed out the need for strong safeguard against fake participation saying: 'The reason why local partners must hold at least 30 per cent is because we do not want non-Sabahan companies using their drivers or general cleaners as a 10 per cent or 15 per cent equity holder. I know many do this. That is over now. We need serious, genuine local participation.' Kota Kinabalu: Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) President Datuk Allan Keripin Nangkai said Sarawak's century-long experience in oil and gas will be useful when partnering with Sabah companies. 'We have been in oil and gas for more than 100 years. Some of our companies are well established. We want to team up with Sabahan companies to share our experience and help them grow,' he said during the forum's question and answer session. He said this at the recent Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) – Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Oil and Gas Business Opportunities Forum at the ITCC Grand Ballroom. When asked about using Sarawak's Petros licenses in Sabah, SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd's Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) and Corporate Executive Director Terry Biusing pointed out partnership while maintaining Sabah's streamlined approach. 'My advice is to work with Sabahan companies. Get them to apply for the license,' he said. He said Sabah deliberately chose not to create duplicate licensing systems, instead focusing on monitoring and transparency through existing Petronas frameworks. 'We do not want to create another unnecessary level of control. We want to work with Petronas,' Terry said, pointing out SMJ Energy's efficient, results-focused approach that delivers through policy changes rather than adding more bureaucracy. Meanwhile, Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun pointed out the need for strong safeguard against fake participation saying: 'The reason why local partners must hold at least 30 per cent is because we do not want non-Sabahan companies using their drivers or general cleaners as a 10 per cent or 15 per cent equity holder. I know many do this. That is over now. We need serious, genuine local participation.' The transformation of Sabah's oil and gas services sector reflects more than just economic success, it shows how smart government action, combined with industry collaboration and transparent processes, can create opportunities while maintaining the highest standards. Through SMJ Energy's leadership and the State Government's vision, Sabah has created a monitoring system that tracks not only revenue and contracts but also company capabilities across different work areas. The organisation keeps detailed profiles of the top 10 Sabahan companies in each major work category and monitors services being exported by local companies, showing their growing competitiveness beyond State borders. Regular performance reviews, compliance checking, tender reviews and pre-tender briefings ensure continuous improvement and fair processes. Terry said the establishment of the Sabah Local Content Council and Joint Task Force for Mandatory Partnerships provides ongoing governance and support for the sector's development. 'This systematic approach has created a model that can be copied by other regions, one that prioritises local empowerment, maintains international standards and delivers measurable results,' Terry said. As the sector continues to grow, with companies now exporting services beyond Sabah, the State is well-positioned to become not just Malaysia's energy hub, but a regional centre of excellence for oil and gas services. 'The opportunity is huge. We spend about RM7 billion annually on oil and gas in Sabah. That opportunity is there for Sabah,' he said. With continued focus on building capabilities, strategic partnerships and maintaining world-class standards, Sabah's oil and gas transformation stands as proof of what can be achieved when government vision meets industry expertise and local determination. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Seven projects to deliver more efficient, stable power to Sabah, Labuan

KOTA KINABALU: Over 60,000 consumers in Sabah and Labuan will benefit from a more stable and efficient power supply with the implementation of seven energy projects valued at RM260.7million. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also energy transition and water transformation minister, said the projects under his ministry involve substation upgrades, new grid line connections, and safety monitoring systems. "(These are) designed to ensure reliable electricity supply across areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi, and Labuan," he said during the handover ceremony for the seven completed energy sector projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) here. The PMU KKBU project, initiated under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), now benefits around 11,452 users in Tanjung Aru and Kota Kinabalu city. It includes a building housing 132kV and 33kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and 132/33/11kV transformers, replacing the outdated 66/11kV system with no replacement parts available. The project also supports a new 33kV cable connection to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, thus improving supply reliability to this strategic location. Other completed projects include the 132kV Labuan–Sipitang Interconnection which was completed on Sept 2 last year, but awaiting the completion of Sarawak Energy's portion by September 2025. "Once operational, it will enable the import of 30MW of power from Sarawak, with a grid capacity of up to 500MW, making it part of the Asean Power Grid linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Philippines," said Fadillah. Another one is the RM31.3 million 33/11kV Ranau Main Distribution Substation (PPU) that was completed March last year and connects Ranau to the Sabah grid and reduces dependency on an 18MW diesel power plant, benefiting 15,620 users while cutting diesel subsidies. Others are the RM30.02 million Batu Sapi PPU to address old system issues; RM42 million Protection Online Monitoring System with the installation of 15 km submarine fibre optic cables from Kampung Lambidan, Menumbok to Tanjung Aru and Labuan. The RM50.011 million PMU at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) which has been operational since Aug 12 last year, raised load capacity from 93.51MW to 131.60MW, lowered SAIDI index, and reinforced 33kV distribution in Sulaman and Alamesra, benefiting over 5,000 users including UMS Hospital. The RM6.3 million 11kV System Enhancement in Labuan, which was also completed in Nov last year, upgraded protection systems at PPU Rancha-Rancha, boosting infrastructure to support new developments in Labuan.

CEO Masterclass 2025: Transformation of Mindset and Attitude Essential for Sabahans to scale beyond limits

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: Azwin Zawawi Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The much-anticipated CEO Masterclass 2025 marked its successful return with the participation of nearly 400 industry leaders and professionals at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Thursday. The event, co-organized by the Sabah Young Business and Industry Leaders (SYBIL) and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Sabah, reaffirmed the strength of their collaboration in delivering one of the state's most esteemed platforms for leadership and networking. In his welcoming speech, SYBIL Founding President and Group General Manager of SEDCO, Datuk Ar. James Wong Kein Peng mentioned, 'In Sabah, it is not that we entrepreneurs are any less capable than our international counterparts - but it is due to a lack of exposure. Our industry friends from Singapore and KL scaling 30 outlets per year, have unlocked their imagination of what is possible - and we need to bring that confidence to scale up and think big to Sabah.' The greatest impact to Sabah's economy happens when local businesses learn to unlock their potential, scale up their organizations and manage to attract and retain the best local talent to work in Sabah. James accentuated that SYBIL is dedicated to continue organizing events that bring value to the Sabah Business Community. 'With CEO Masterclass, we are creating a powerful network to enable A-list business players to share their experience and enable direct dialogue and learning with our local entrepreneurs.' Engaging panel discussions were the crowd pleasers of the event. The first session 'Overcoming the Business Death Valley' moderated by Ray Chou brought together three distinguished panellists, Kenji Yeo CEO of Amazing Borneo Tours; Geraldyn Low co-founder of Ventamin and Asgari Stephens Director of Intelligent Capital, to discuss the challenges and lessons learnt from their personal entrepreneurship journeys. Datuk Ar. James moderated an esteemed panel of speakers that took participants on a journey to learning from the titans of Sabahan listed companies from their experience of 'Scaling Beyond Sabah' on how they succeeded in listing their companies on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia. Datuk Dr. Gordon Loke, Group Managing Director of KTI Landmark Berhad; Liaw Hen Kong Managing Director of Life Water Berhad and Kang Ket Hung Managing Director of Colform Berhad shared their inspiring stories on growing their respective businesses from small towns in Sabah to becoming public listed companies and stand proudly amongst global giants. Guest of Honour YB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Masidi Manjun emphasized that true progress begins with a shift in mindset. He urged government-linked companies (GLCs) to adopt a business-driven approach and collaborate with the private sector to leverage their expertise and efficiency. 'The government's role is not to compete with businesses but to facilitate their growth,' he noted, adding that public-private partnerships can lead to greater profitability, job creation, and tax revenue. Masidi encouraged GLCs to offer equity to private players and co-manage ventures to achieve shared success. Highlighting the importance of adaptability and cooperation in today's economy, he praised CEO Masterclass as a vital platform to foster these partnerships, reminding all that when Sabahans unite, challenges can be overcome together. A key highlight of the event was the keynote by Professor Inderjit Singh Dhaliwal, a distinguished business entrepreneur from Singapore, in a session moderated by John Cham, Managing Director of Blue Swan Home Care. In his talk, 'Scaling Beyond Limits,' Professor Inderjit shared hard-earned strategies from building multiple successful companies. He emphasized that 'Sabah businesses must be bold to step out of your comfort zones, embrace a strategic mindset, and leverage your unique identity to drive growth.' Collaboration between the public and private sectors is vital, along with a clear long-term vision. He also urged, 'It is crucial for Sabah to tap into its global diaspora talent and bring them back to contribute, to support and truly unlock the state's full potential.' Datuk Lee Swi Heng, Vice President of MICCI Malaysia and Organizing Committee of CEO Masterclass 2025 wrapped-up the event with a heartfelt thanks to all the respected guests, sponsors and attendees.
