Gauahar Khan opens up about miscarriage, says she didn't stop working during second pregnancy: ‘Can't be unprofessional'

Indian Express19-07-2025
The debate around new parents getting time off from work to focus on their children has been making headlines after Deepika Padukone's exit from Spirit, reportedly because her requests weren't agreed to. Actor Gauahar Khan recently talked about the challenges she faced while trying to tackle the difficulties that come with becoming a mother at the age of 39. Gauahar, who is expecting her second child, revealed that this is actually her third time getting pregnant, as she lost her first child to a miscarriage.
She told Debinna Bonnerjee on her podcast that she feels lucky to be able to conceive at this age, as she always wished to have multiple children. However, losing her first child took a big toll on her. 'I think this was the right time for something like this, and I was 36 when I got married. We knew we had to start trying for a child within a year. I had a miscarriage before, and it took me at least 1 to 1.5 years to recover from that and to be able to tell myself that 'okay, let's try.' When I conceived my son Zehaan, everything went smoothly.' She went on to explain the story behind her first pregnancy and added, 'At that point you assume that everything is going to be fine, and no one had expected me to lose my child. It was extremely difficult, and it took me some time to get over it, so by the time I gave birth to Zehaan, I was already 39, and if I wanted another child, it was now or never.'

When asked about how she handled her work while trying to cope with everything personally, Gauahar admitted that she never stopped working. She said, 'I was working throughout my first pregnancy, and during the first three months of both these pregnancies, I was shooting for an action role. This time around I was blasting bombs while shooting the finale of Fauji 2 in Pune. If I am in the middle of a shoot, I can't be unprofessional in my duties as an actor. The action directors are very accommodating, and they shoot the scenes accordingly.' The Fauji 2 shared that she hardly ever took a break from working, and she was actually shooting for another action role a month before her miscarriage.
'Actually, while I was shooting Shiksha Mandal, I was pregnant with my first child, and I was still shooting all the action scenes, including horse riding. Just a month after that I lost my child, but it's a very strange thing that every time I am pregnant, I end up doing action roles and shooting difficult scenes,' added Gauahar.

Prabhas' ‘Spirit' Shoot Likely Delayed? Sandeep Reddy Vanga Awaits Actor's Schedule Clearance

Prabhas' Spirit shoot likely delayed as he wraps The Raja Saab and PrabhasHanu. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Spirit promises high-octane action. The much-anticipated action drama Spirit, starring Prabhas and directed by Animal filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has been the talk of the town for a while. However, despite earlier buzz suggesting that the film would go on floors by September 2025, fresh reports indicate that the shoot might be delayed due to scheduling conflicts. According to a report by Gulte, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga is keen on having an uninterrupted shooting schedule with the pan-India star. To ensure that Prabhas is not juggling multiple projects during Spirit's production, the director is reportedly insisting that the actor wrap up all prior commitments before stepping into the role. That said, Prabhas still has substantial work pending on his ongoing projects. His period drama, tentatively titled PrabhasHanu and helmed by Hanu Raghavapudi, is unlikely to be completed by September. Additionally, his upcoming horror comedy The Raja Saab still has three songs and an action sequence left to shoot. Given this situation, it seems increasingly unlikely that Spirit will commence production as originally planned. However, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation from the makers, as no formal announcement has been made regarding the revised timeline. What We Know About Spirit Spirit marks Sandeep Reddy Vanga's next directorial outing after the success of Animal and features Prabhas in the role of a fierce police officer determined to dismantle a powerful underworld syndicate. The film promises high-octane action, intense drama, and a compelling storyline—a trademark of Vanga's filmmaking style. Initially, Pathaan star Deepika Padukone was rumored to play the female lead. However, due to unsuccessful negotiations, the makers have reportedly roped in Triptii Dimri, fresh off her breakout role in Animal. This marks her South Indian cinema debut, adding further excitement to the casting. Meanwhile, Prabhas Prepares for The Raja Saab While Spirit gears up for its new timeline, Prabhas is expected to return to theatres with his upcoming film The Raja Saab. Slated for release on December 5, 2025, the film is a horror comedy that tells the story of a carefree young man who attempts to make a quick fortune by flipping his ancestral mansion—only to discover a terrifying secret lurking within. Directed by Maruthi, The Raja Saab features an ensemble cast including Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, Riddhi Kumar, and more. Radhika Madan supports Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand: 'Male actors are given that privilege'

As the dialogues continue around the grueling nature of shoot schedules, Radhika Madan has also expressed her displeasure regarding the imbalance of hours between male and female actors in the industry, having appeared in 'Angrezi Medium', 'Pataakha', 'Shiddat', and 'Sarfira'. The topic gained recent attention following Deepika Padukone 's departure from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's upcoming film Spirit, where she was said to have asked for an eight-hour workday, which prompted renewed discussion around work-life balance and gender inequity within Bollywood. Radhika Madan on eight-hour shoot days The actress told Hindustan Times that she has had both 12-to-14-hour days of shooting and shorter days of eight hours. She believes that the work itself is the same, but working against deadlines allows the team to be more committed and concentrated, therefore, the shoot takes place within that time. She said she has seen films filmed, and released, and even be box office successes, all under these turns of time, and if she had not seen it herself, she would not have believed it to be possible to work and achieve, within working hours. On equality in Bollywood At a recent event, Radhika addressed the ongoing discussion regarding workplace equality in the Bollywood industry. She added that whenever women stand by working conditions equal to their male counterparts, those demands should be treated as commonplace rather than unreasonable claims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo She affirmed that these kinds of discussions can be collaborative when the respect and understanding are mutual, and she also pointed out that part of the concern comes from the availability of time privileges that some male actors have but not many women. Touching upon her own experience with professional burnout, Madan recalled the toll of working across seven projects in a single year. She shared that the emotional weight of multiple roles affected her deeply, leading to depression and forcing her to seek help. According to her, the industry needs to recognize the reality of burnout and move towards greater equality—without favouring male actors with special treatment. Recalls her marathon shoot days During a recent YouTube vlog with Farah Khan, the actress revisited her debut experience and the grueling schedule that came with it. When Farah remarked that Radhika probably didn't have an eight-hour shift on her first show, Radhika responded that she had endured non-stop shoots lasting 48 to 56 hours. Farah then added her own perspective, noting that she doesn't advocate for the eight-hour work model either, quipping that such relentless effort is what creates something truly valuable—comparing it to how gold is forged through intense pressure.
