This funky electric Ford Bronco is exactly the sort of car we want in the UK

You're looking at an all-electric version of the funky Ford Bronco off-roader. But it's not, if you're wondering, designed for Mulholland drive or the Moab, but megacities like Shanghai. That's because this new model has been designed specifically for the Chinese market, yet we think it should really be coming here too. Advertisement - Article continues below
Officially called the 'Ford Bronco New Energy', this large SUV has been built as part of Ford's joint venture with the Chinese-owned Jiangling Motors group. As such, it doesn't feature a thirsty four-cylinder or V6 petrol engine as it does in the US, but an all-electric powertrain with the option of a range-extender hybrid too.
So while it's all-but impossible to legislate the American Ford Bronco in the UK and Europe thanks to our strict emissions regulations, this model seems to solve the problem by going straight in for a much cleaner electric powertrain.
In terms of size, the Bronco New Energy is just over five metres long and a touch under two metres wide, making it around 250mm longer than a Land Rover Defender, but marginally narrower. Also like a Defender, the electric Bronco features a car-like unibody construction, rather than the American Bronco's ladder frame. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
The floor houses a big 105kWh battery pack that gives it up to 404 miles of range on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which prioritises lower speeds and urban environments. This strong range figure is likely boosted by the fact it's not four-wheel drive, instead featuring a single motor with 271bhp.
There's also a 241bhp plug-in range extender variant, which downsizes the battery size to around 43kWh and packs in a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that can recharge the battery on the go. Ford quotes an all-electric range figure of 143 miles for this one, after which the petrol engine will kick in.
Aside from this, we have few technical details, but can see from the images that the new car looks just as rugged as the traditional Bronco, thanks to its upright body, retro detailing and chunky wheel arches. No images of the interior have been revealed, but we suspect it to be focused towards Chinese consumers who are more digitally connected and technically savvy than the median European buyer. So in other words, expect plenty of screen real estate.
This isn't the only good looking Ford SUV built solely for the Chinese market, either, with the Territory SUV also built as part of the aforementioned joint venture. Neither model is expected to come to Europe in the near future, which we reckon is a bit of a shame.

Tesla profit plunges in latest quarter as Musk's turn to politics continues to keep buyers away

The fallout from Elon Musk's plunge into politics a year ago is still hammering his Tesla business as both sales and profits dropped sharply again in the latest quarter. The car company that has faced boycotts for months said Wednesday that revenue dropped 12% and profits slumped 16% in the three months through June as buyers continued to stay away. Quarterly profits at the electric vehicle, battery and robotics company fell to $1.17 billion, or 33 cents a share, from $1.4 billion, or 40 cents a share. That was the third quarter in a row that profit dropped. Revenue fell from $25.5 billion to $22.5 billion in the April through June period, slightly above Wall Street's forecast.

Tesla starts 'first builds' of affordable model, posts steepest drop in quarterly revenue in over a decade

July 23 (Reuters) - Tesla(TSLA.O), opens new tab started making the "first builds" of its affordable model in June, the electric vehicle maker said on Wednesday, adding that it expects volume production in the second half of this year. Tesla did not provide an update on its full-year deliveries forecast after pulling its guidance in April, citing economic concerns. The company reported the steepest decline in quarterly revenue in more than a decade, with a 12% fall, as it battles strong competition from cheaper electric vehicles and a backlash against CEO Elon Musk's political views. Tesla shares were down 1% in after-hours trading. Revenue fell to $22.5 billion for the April-June quarter from $25.50 billion a year earlier. Analysts on average were expecting revenue of $22.74 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company reported a second straight quarterly revenue drop despite rolling out a much-awaited refreshed version of its best-selling Model Y SUV that investors had hoped would rekindle demand. Analysts now expect the cheaper vehicle to boost sales. Tesla had said in April it would start producing the model by the end of the first half and sources had told Reuters the vehicle, a stripped-down version of its Model Y SUV, would be delayed by at least months. Tesla on Wednesday did not disclose any details on the model or how many units it had made. Much of the company's trillion-dollar valuation hangs on its bet on its robotaxi service - a small trial of which was started in Austin, Texas, last month - and developing humanoid robots. However, investors are worried about whether Musk will be able to give enough time and attention to Tesla after he locked horns with President Donald Trump by forming a new political party this month. He had promised weeks earlier that he would cut back on government work and focus on his companies. A series of high-profile executive exits, including a longtime Elon Musk confidant who oversaw sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe and left Tesla last month, is also adding to the concerns.

Low expectations for Tesla's second-quarter earnings attributed to Musk

It's been a rocky year for Tesla's financial outlook. The electric vehicle maker once led the market for gas-free cars, but recently has faced falling stock, steep competition and a CEO who's been described as erratic and a chaos maker. Given the events of the past few months, Wall Street has a pessimistic expectation for Tesla's second-quarter earnings, to be reported after the bell on Wednesday. Analysts are predicting the company's second-quarter revenue to be $22.7bn, down 11% from the same time last year, and marking a second straight quarterly decline, according to CNBC. Tesla's stock has vacillated throughout 2025, starting the year at a near all-time high of $428 per share in January and then plummeting by nearly half to $222 per share in March. Tesla's overall stock has dropped nearly 13% this year. Earlier this month, Tesla released data on its vehicle deliveries and showed a 14% decrease over last year. In Europe, Tesla's new-car sales fell by 27.9% in May from a year earlier. That was in sharp contrast with other electric vehicle makers, which have seen a jump in sales over the past year. The volatility at Tesla has been partially attributed to CEO Elon Musk's role in Donald Trump's administration as the de facto head of the so-called 'department of government efficiency' (Doge). At Doge, Musk led the charge to downsize the federal government, getting rid of various agencies and instituting layoffs in nearly all departments. This sparked mass countrywide protests against Tesla and demands to boycott the company. By early June, as Musk was scheduled to leave his role as a special government employee, the relationship between the CEO and president had frayed, leading to a spectacular blowup between the two men. They hurled insults at each other over social media and, once again, Tesla's stock plunged. 'The Tesla brand is under attack and provides a prime example of negative brand equity rub – the perception of Elon Musk, its chief executive, has rubbed the sheen right out of what once was a darling and soaring automotive brand,' said Dipanjan Chatterjee, a principal analyst for Forrester. 'This poses a significant threat to Tesla's growth, as large parts of the prospect pool are poisoned by what they perceive as a toxic brand that is inseparable from its leader.' After the Musk and Trump feud, Musk said he was going to focus on running his companies and began hyping the rollout of Tesla's first driverless robotaxi in Austin, Texas. The launch featured about 10 cars designated to certain areas of the city and had 'safety drivers' in the front passenger seat. Although Musk touted the launch as a success, several people posted videos on social media showing the robotaxis driving down the wrong lane, speeding and unable to make left turns. Two days later, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the service and requested that Tesla supply the agency with information on the incidents. The CEO has said he's not done with Washington, however, and is now starting a new US political party called the America party.
