Delhi traders vow to halt all business ties with Turkiye, Azerbaijan
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) organised a campaign at the Delhi Secretariat where several market associations, traders and factory owners participated.
New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Traders in Delhi on Friday pledged to halt all business ties with Turkiye and Azerbaijan, following the two countries' recent political stances regarding India's counter-terror operations under Operation Sindoor in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
He also mentioned that representatives from major markets such as Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, Naya Bazar, Khari Baoli, Gandhi Nagar, Sadar Bazar, Rohini, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Bawana, and Narela were present and joined the protest.
In addition to the trade boycott, participants also vowed not to travel to Turkiye or Azerbaijan.
Manoj Khandelwal, director of a Delhi-based travel and tourism agency, said that many travellers have already cancelled trips to these countries.
He added that most travel agencies are no longer offering bookings for both countries.
CTI convenor Priyanka Saxena said that in 2024, approximately 2.75 lakh Indian tourists visited Turkiye and 2.25 lakh visited Azerbaijan. Tourism contributes around 12–14 per cent to the overall economy of both countries and Indian visitors form a significant part of that.
CTI Chairman Goyal further said that hundreds of Delhi-based traders have already started cancelling their orders with Turkiye and Azerbaijan and are now exploring alternative sourcing options in other countries.
India and Turkiye had bilateral trade worth USD 12.5 billion in 2024. According to CTI, the boycott by Indian trader groups could potentially lead to losses of up to Rs 1 lakh crore for Turkiye's economy. PTI SHB HIG

Electronics, pharma industries get 70 pc of total PLI scheme funds in FY25: Govt data
New Delhi: The electronics and pharmaceutical sectors emerged as the biggest gainers under the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in the financial year 2024-25, cornering nearly 70 per cent of the total incentive disbursed, according to official data. Out of Rs 10,114 crore released under the scheme during the year, the electronics sector received Rs 5,732 crore, while the pharma sector got Rs 2,328 crore, the data showed. Launched in 2021 to boost domestic manufacturing, the PLI scheme was initially rolled out for 14 key sectors. Since then, it has played a crucial role in strengthening India's industrial base and pushing for higher value-added exports. The success of the scheme is clearly reflected in the performance of the electronics sector. Due to the strong manufacturing push, electronics have now made it to the list of India's top three export categories. The sector recorded a remarkable export growth of 32.46 per cent in 2024-25, with shipments rising from $29.12 billion in 2023-24 to $38.58 billion in the previous financial year. This is a big jump from $15.7 billion in 2021-22 and $23.6 billion in 2022-23, according to the government data. A major highlight within the electronics segment was computer hardware and peripherals, which saw an impressive 101 per cent growth, with exports doubling from $0.7 billion to $1.4 billion in FY25. The United Arab Emirates, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Italy were among the top destinations for Indian electronic goods. The pharmaceutical sector also continued to show strength. India's drugs and pharmaceutical products are now reaching over 200 countries. In 2024-25, pharma exports rose by nearly 10 per cent to touch $30.5 billion -- underlining the country's global presence in the healthcare and medicines space. The fresh data points to the growing impact of the PLI scheme in driving India's manufacturing and export ambitions, especially in sectors where the country is beginning to emerge as a global leader.

After Rahul Gandhi's nudge, Rohith Vemula Bill likely during Karnataka legislature's Monsoon Session
After a nudge from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a Bill named after Rohith Vemula, the Dalit PhD scholar who died by suicide in 2016, is on the anvil in Karnataka to prevent discrimination against students in institutes of higher education in the state. The Karnataka Rohith Vemula (Prevention of Exclusion or Injustice)(Right to Education and Dignity) Bill, 2025, is expected to be tabled in the upcoming Monsoon Session of the legislature. The Bill aims to 'prevent exclusion or injustice and to safeguard the right to education and dignity for the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and minorities and to provide equal access and right to education in all public or Private or Deemed Universities established in the State of Karnataka'. Offence under the legislation, as per the draft accessed by The Indian Express, will be non-bailable and cognisable. Every person who discriminates and every person who aids or abets in the episode are liable for punishment. The first offence under its provisions will attract a punishment of one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000, and empower the courts to grant compensation payable by the accused to the victim, which may extend to Rs 1 lakh. Repeat offence under the Act will be penalised with a three-year jail term apart from a Rs 1 lakh fine. If an institution violates the provision of being 'open to all classes, castes, creed, gender or nation', then it will attract a similar penalty. Moreover, the state government 'shall not provide any financial aid or grant to such institution' violating the provisions of the Bill. In April this year, Gandhi wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to bring a legislation named after Vemula to prevent caste-based prejudice in higher educational institutions. Following this, Siddaramaiah said the Karnataka Congress government was committed to ensuring that the oppressed classes did not face any discrimination in the educational system. The proposed legislation was also part of the Congress manifesto for the Karnataka Assembly elections. Vemula ended his life at the University of Hyderabad in January 2016 in protest against caste discrimination.
