Al-Azhar Condemns Hanover Terror Attack, Urges Action Against White Supremacist Violence in Europe
Al-Azhar strongly condemned what it described as a 'heinous terrorist attack' that claimed the life of Algerian student Rahma Ayat in the German city of Hanover. The attack, reportedly carried out by a far-right extremist, has sparked outrage across the Muslim world.
In a statement issued Monday, Al-Azhar expressed its deep sorrow over the assassination, calling it a 'barbaric act' that reflects the alarming rise of white supremacist and anti-Muslim violence in Europe.
The institution stressed the urgent need for European governments to confront far-right terrorism and dismantle the ideological and political foundations of neo-white supremacist movements. Al-Azhar urged the adoption of firm legal frameworks to criminalize and deter such hate-driven attacks targeting Muslims and refugees.
While denouncing the killing, Al-Azhar extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Rahma Ayat, praying that God grants her mercy and her loved ones patience during this painful time.
The incident has reignited debates over racial hatred and Islamophobia in Europe, as well as calls for stronger international cooperation to combat violent extremism in all its forms.

France foreign minister says strike on Gaza church 'unacceptable' - War on Gaza
France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot Thursday slammed as "unacceptable" an Israeli strike on Gaza's only Catholic church that the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem confirmed killed two people. "Unacceptable attack in Gaza against the Church of the Holy Family, historically under the protection of France," he said, alluding to a 16th-centrury accord for France to protect Catholic Christians in the Holy Land. "The church has been sheltering both Christians and Muslims, including some children with disabilities," Fadel Naem, the acting director of Al-Ahli Hospital, which received the wounded, told AP. At least two people were in critical condition, and others injured included one child with disabilities, two women, and an elderly person, Naem added. Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, its military has repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure, including places of worship such as historic mosques and churches that are central to Palestine's cultural and religious heritage. According to figures published by Gaza's government media office in April, Israeli airstrikes have destroyed more than 1,000 mosques and three churches – in what many observers see as a deliberate assault on sites of worship.
