Ryan Gosling is not an astronaut in Project Hail Mary's first trailer
The trailer starts with a very bearded Grace waking up from a coma on a spaceship that he discovers is 11.9 light years from Earth. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Earth's sun, as well as countless neighboring stars, are all dying as a result of a mysterious substance — except one. A reluctant Grace, who has a Doctorate in molecular biology, is recruited as an astronaut to visit this star and hopefully find out why it's not affected in an effort to save mankind.
But it turns out Earth isn't the only planet with a dying sun who has sent a savior to this star, and Grace finds himself meeting an alien ally who we only see brief glimpses of in this first trailer.
The film is produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who created the animated Spider-Verse franchise and who wrote and directed the original Lego movie. The Project Hail Mary novel was adapted by Drew Goodard (who previously adapted Weir's The Martian) and the film, which hits theaters on March 20th, 2026, also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

Denis Villeneuve to Direct Next James Bond Film
Denis Villeneuve is going from Dune to 007. The filmmaker has been tapped to direct the next James Bond movie, the first from Amazon MGM Studios. Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve's artistic partner and wife, will serve as an executive producer, along with Villeneuve. As previously announced, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' said Villeneuve. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.' Pascal and Heyman added, 'Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.' Bond is one of the most sought-after franchises for filmmakers. Reportedly, directors who met for this film also included Edward Berger, Edgar Wright and Paul King. Villeneuve was last in theaters with Dune: Part 2, which earned over $700 million at the box office and several Oscar nominations, including best picture, winning best sound and best visual effects. Currently, he is in prep on the third Dune film, which is scheduled to shoot this summer. It's unclear when Bond will begin production, but the search is underway for a screenwriter who will work with Villeneuve to bring the newest incarnation of the secret agent to the big screen. The new Bond will mark the franchise's 26th title and the follow-up to 2021's No Time to Die, which was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and served as Daniel Craig's swan song as 007. This film will also mark the first Bond outing following Amazon's $8.45 billion takeover of 007's long-standing backer MGM. In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, which allowed the tech/entertainment company the rights to distribute all future James Bond films. But, until this year, there was little movement due to the impasse between Amazon executives and the longtime shepherds of all things Bond, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. In February, it was announced that Wilson and Broccoli were pursuing a deal with Amazon that would allow the studio to control the creative on future productions. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, commented, 'We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself.' In a 2021 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Villeneuve said, 'I would deeply love one day to make a James Bond movie.' It appears that day has come. June 25, 6:50 p.m. A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Villeneuve would be the second non-British director of a Bond movie. Henry Golding Says Stepping Into James Bond's Shoes Is 'Every Actor's Kind of Nightmare'
For Henry Golding, taking on the famed role of James Bond may be more of a nightmare than a dream. 'I think that's every actor's kind of nightmare,' the Old Guard 2 actor told People at the film's Los Angeles premiere this week. His comments on the famed movie character came after Denis Villeneuve was named the director of the next film in the franchise, the first from Amazon MGM Studios. 'Why can't they bring out more agents or more OO's? I think that would be so much more fun, because there just isn't the restraints and the expectation.' The Crazy Rich Asians star added, 'Maybe I'm just a pussy. I don't know. But I think I would love it so much more if there wasn't that overhanging cultural pressure.' Following the news of Villeneuve being named the next James Bond director, there's been speculation about which actor will take on the titular role. As for now, it's merely known that Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve's artistic partner and wife, will serve as an executive producer alongside Amy Pascal and David Heyman. 'Some of my earliest moviegoing memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' Villeneuve said in a statement Wednesday. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.' 'The trailer for Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary is so good I need the film now'
2025 is the year of the trailer. All too often teasers for movies have given far too much away, if not the entire plot, and now it feels like Hollywood is finally reclaiming the art of the trailer. At least, it does with Project Hail Mary. The first trailer for the sci-fi film landed on Monday, 30 June, revealing Ryan Gosling as a man sent to space alone in a bid to save humanity from extinction, his character Ryland Grace is out of his depth and feels woefully unqualified for the mission as a middle school teacher — though he does have a doctorate in molecular biology. The preview comes almost nine months ahead of the film's release, and it has got me so excited for the film itself I already can't wait to see it. Project Hail Mary's trailer felt like a breath of fresh air compared to previous teasers, giving just enough away to be get me (and audiences) excited and ready to spend my hard-earned cash on tickets. What is it about the trailer that is so great? Well for one Gosling is always charming and he already seems to be having a ball in this teaser for Project Hail Mary. His utterance of the phrase "I put the not in astronaut" is just sublime, give him his Oscar nomination now please and thank you. The promise of a fun sci-fi epic is also an enticing one, especially when the writing is already as strong as it appears in the trailer. This can definitely be linked back to the source material from Andy Weir, the creative mind behind another excellent sci-fi novel The Martian. There are some that have complained that trailer has given just slightly too much away by revealing a glimpse of an interaction between Ryland and alien life, but it also feels like it fits with the comedic, fish out of water feel of the movie. It's not just the visuals that are a spectacle in the trailer, it's also the strength of the music choice — in Project Hail Mary's case the use of Harry Styles song Sign of the Times. It's something that was done well in another excellent trailer, the one made for 28 Years Later. The preview for Danny Boyle's return to the 28 Days Later franchise was a real masterstroke, showing some of the best bits without actually revealing the context. Slicing terrifying action sequences together to the tune of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots, a poem with a tempo so repetitive it unsettles the listener. It perfectly encapsulated the sense of dread needed for the British horror film and has been described as one of the best trailers made in recent years for good reason. In this digital age it's always hard to break through, and so for a trailer to make a mark like Project Hail Mary has is a real feat. And I for one can't wait to see the film, but I may also read the book ahead of its release because I'm so excited I already want to know what happens to Ryland in space. Project Hail Mary is coming to UK cinemas on 20 March, 2026.
