‘Love jihad' threat to nation's integrity, says court, gives man 7-yr jail sentence
A Yamunanagar court has sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting and intimidating a minor Hindu girl to coerce her into a relationship with a Muslim juvenile, terming the case one of 'love jihad'.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict and said such acts were 'a potential threat' to the nation's sovereignty and integrity.
While acknowledging that 'love jihad' is not a legal term under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita or the
Pocso Act
, the court described it as a 'purported campaign by Muslim men to convert non-Muslim women to Islam by pretending to be in love.'
In Nov last year, a 14-yearold girl filed a complaint at City Yamunanagar police station, naming Shahbaj and a juvenile.
She alleged the boy had stalked her on her way to school while Shahbaj pressured her to befriend him.
The FIR invoked sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS, and sections 17 (abetment), 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment of a child) under Pocso. The defence counsel, SS Nehra, argued that the accused was falsely implicated.
However, additional sessions judge Ranjana Aggarwal, in her July 17 order, said Shahbaj systematically tried to force an interfaith relationship through 'allurement and inducement.' The court awarded him four years under Pocso Section 8, two years under Section 12, and one year under BNS Section 351(2), with fines totalling Rs 1 lakh. All sentences will run consecutively

Four hockey trainers picked up in Odisha for sexually assaulting minor girl
Four hockey trainers were picked up by Jajpur district police in Odisha after a minor girl alleged that they had sexually assaulted her in a lodge in the first week of July. A girl had lodged a complaint with Jajpur Town Police on Sunday evening alleging that the four trainers had invited her to a lodge for dinner on July 3 and sexually assaulted her. 'We have picked up four hockey trainers for questioning after a minor girl, a hockey player, levelled allegation of sexual assaults. We will proceed further on the case after the girl records her statement before a magistrate,' said Sarat Patra, Inspector-in-Charge at the police station. ' They [trainers] have allegedly gang-raped her in the lodge. Police have recorded a statement of the girl under Section 180 of BNSS,' said Rajiv Mohanty, special public prosecutor in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) court. Mr. Mohanty said the girl had recorded her statement under Section 183 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) before a woman magistrate in POCSO court. He, however, said the girl had not undergone medical examination. Meanwhile, the district collector of Jagatsinghpur has ordered suspension of the principal and mathematics teacher of Swami Arupananda College following alleged suppression regarding sexual harassment of a minor girl in the college.

Woman thrown off moving bus, injured
Trichy: A 23-year-old woman was thrown off a moving govt bus when it took a sharp turn near Srirangam on Sunday. The bus driver was booked for rash driving. Sources said the TNSTC bus was travelling from Peruvalappur to Chathiram bus stand. Anandhi, from J J Nagar in Srirangam, was travelling home after work around 5.50pm. She was standing near the front entry of the bus, which lacked doors. Suddenly, the driver made a sharp and swift turn in the roundabout near Kannimarthoppu. Anandhi was thrown off and she fell on the road. She suffered an injury on her head and lacerations on hands. She was admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. Based on a complaint from Anandhi's mother Kumutham, traffic police registered a case against driver R Rajesh, 40, from Lalgudi, under BNS sections 281 (rash driving) and 125a (endangering life).
