Four hockey trainers picked up in Odisha for sexually assaulting minor girl
A girl had lodged a complaint with Jajpur Town Police on Sunday evening alleging that the four trainers had invited her to a lodge for dinner on July 3 and sexually assaulted her.
'We have picked up four hockey trainers for questioning after a minor girl, a hockey player, levelled allegation of sexual assaults. We will proceed further on the case after the girl records her statement before a magistrate,' said Sarat Patra, Inspector-in-Charge at the police station.
' They [trainers] have allegedly gang-raped her in the lodge. Police have recorded a statement of the girl under Section 180 of BNSS,' said Rajiv Mohanty, special public prosecutor in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) court.
Mr. Mohanty said the girl had recorded her statement under Section 183 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) before a woman magistrate in POCSO court. He, however, said the girl had not undergone medical examination.
Meanwhile, the district collector of Jagatsinghpur has ordered suspension of the principal and mathematics teacher of Swami Arupananda College following alleged suppression regarding sexual harassment of a minor girl in the college.

Man gets 10 years in jail for raping minor girl in 2019
Ghaziabad: A special Pocso court in the city sentenced a 26-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a Class 11 student in 2019. Special public prosecutor Utkarsh Vats said that the incident occurred on Nov 14, 2019. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A complaint was registered by the girl's father on Nov 19, 2019, following which the accused was arrested, and the statement of the survivor was recorded by the police. Based on the minor's statement, police included rape charges under Section 376 IPC. The prosecution presented six witnesses, including the victim and the complainant in the case. The court found substance and congruity in the girl's statement given at the police station, recorded before the magistrate under section 164 CrPC, and her examination-in-chief in the court. Her statement was supported by the medical report and the statement of the doctor who carried out the test. The victim informed the court that she was friends with the accused on Facebook, and on Nov 14, when she was in emotional distress after a fight with her mother, the accused offered her to travel with him to his relative's place. "Though I refused initially, he pressured me, and there at his aunt's home, despite my objections, he established a physical relationship," the 16-year-old informed the court. The medico-legal report confirmed penetrative sexual assault, but no injury mark was found. Citing two different judgements of the apex court, the judge noted "that if the statement of the prosecutrix is found to be worthy of credence and reliable, it requires no corroboration, and the court may convict the accused on the sole testimony of the prosecutrix". It cited two more Supreme Court judgements to assert that even a medical report is not required to establish the commission of rape if the statement of the victim is beyond doubt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "In this case, the statement of the victim and corroboration by the doctor is enough to establish the fact that the accused committed rape on the body of the victim and is liable to be pronounced guilty under section 376 IPC," the court held on July 30. The convict was found guilty and charged under section 4 of the Pocso Act, kidnapping under section 363 IPC, and abduction for illicit intercourse under section 366 IPC. The court ruled that sentences awarded under each section would run concurrently, and an amount of Rs 10,000 from the net fine amount would be handed over to the survivor for her rehabilitation.

"The person who posted the status originally hails from Nanded and has been staying in the Daund area for the past couple of years. He has no connection with any of the local people. He had posted an incident in Madhya Pradesh as his status, which led to the violence." He said, "According to eyewitnesses, a mob of 30 to 40 people damaged two vehicles. The police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been issued for the next 48 hours." Special IG Phulari, who rushed to Yavat, said the post became viral and hurt religious feelings of villagers. They come out on streets to launch an agitation in splinter groups for action against the youth. Phulari said the situation escalated after some members of the group resorted to violence, prompting the police to fire tear gas and lathicharge them to control the situation. The youth was detained. The process to register FIRs against him and others, related to rioting and forming unlawful assembly, among other charges, was in progress, he said. The internet service in the area had been suspended to prevent the public from posting reactions on social media, Phulari said. Superintendent of police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill said, "We held a series of meetings with the representatives of the group to maintain peace in the village and appealed to them not to fall prey to rumour-mongering. But by then, the message on social media had become viral. An incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense." Gill said witnesses told the police that villagers took to streets because the emotions were already heightened. Investigations revealed that a few youngsters indulged in vandalism. But nobody was injured. The police patrolled the village. "The situation is peaceful right now," he said, adding that adequate police personnel and a platoon of the State Reserve Police Force had been deployed in Yavat.

HC warns of severe action for cybercrimes targeting children
Underscoring the seriousness of cyber offences targeting children, the Delhi High Court has said that such crimes will attract severe consequences, reflecting the grave psychological impact on victims. While upholding the conviction of a man in a cyber-bullying case involving a minor, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, in a judgement delivered on July 28, stated that digital abuse, though often faceless and silent, can be as mentally scarring as physical violence. The court was hearing an appeal in a 2016 case registered following a complaint lodged by the mother of a 14-year-old girl, a Class IX student, who became the target of a cyber assault. According to the prosecution, the victim received a morphed nude image with her face superimposed on another person's body, accompanied by a threatening message warning that the obscene content would be posted on Facebook unless she complied with the sender's demands. 'The present case reflects a textbook example of cyber-bullying, where an adolescent girl, who was pursuing her studies, became a victim of a targeted assault upon her privacy and dignity,' said Justice Sharma. 'Such conduct, in the virtual world, has very real and devastating consequences in the real world,' the judge said. The High Court said the psychological impact on a minor is difficult to quantify in words in a judgment. A trial court convicted the accused under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and the Information Technology Act. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years. The High Court found no grounds to interfere with the conviction, noting that the plea for leniency on behalf of the man 'stands on a fragile footing'. 'It is important not only to detect and punish such crimes effectively but also to affirmatively uphold a child's right to safety, dignity, and mental well-being in such cases,' it added.
