The Emmy nominations are here. ‘Severance,' ‘The White Lotus' and ‘Adolescence' could have a big day
LOS ANGELES — 'Severance' could separate itself from the competition and reach the upper echelons of the Emmy Awards when nominations are announced Tuesday morning.
The dystopian workplace drama from Apple TV+ achieved a convergence of acclaim and audience buzz for its second season that often leads to the kind of Emmy dominance enjoyed in recent years by 'Succession' and 'Shogun.'
But a flowering of Emmys tends to follow HBO's 'The White Lotus' wherever it goes, and HBO Max's newcomer 'The Pitt' could challenge for nominations and for wins when the trophies are handed out in September.
All will benefit from the absence of 'Shogun,' which last year led all Emmy nominees with 25 and set a record for wins in a season with 18. Its second season is still in the early stages of production and it shouldn't be around for next year's Emmys either.
'Severance' has become a signature show for Apple TV+. The streamer has gotten plenty of Emmy nominations for dramas including 'The Morning Show' and 'Slow Horses,' and 'Ted Lasso' was downright dominant on the comedy side.
But Apple has lacked the kind of breakaway prestige drama that HBO seems to produce perennially.
Adam Scott and Britt Lower are virtual locks for lead acting nominations for what amounted to dual roles as their characters' 'innie' work selves and 'outie' home selves. Tramell Tillman is just as likely to get a nod for playing their tone-shifting, pineapple-wielding supervisor, and Ben Stiller is bound to get a directing nomination.
'Severance' got 14 nominations for its first season in 2023, but won just two, for its music and its title sequence.
Nominations will be streamed live beginning at 11:30 a.m. Eastern at Emmys.com/nominations.
Two categories were announced early on 'CBS Mornings.' The nominees for talk series are 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,' 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' and 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.'
The nominees for reality competition series are: 'The Amazing Race'; RuPaul's Drag Race'; 'Survivor'; 'Top Chef' and 'The Traitors.'
What else may get 2025 Emmy nomination
Apple TV+'s Hollywood satire 'The Studio' could draw a host of comedy nominations for its first season as it takes on previously dominant Emmy veterans like 'Hacks' and 'The Bear.'
'The Studio' star and co-creator Seth Rogen could get nods for acting, writing and directing, and the show's all-star guest stars, including Zoë Kravitz, Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard, may also add some novelty to the nominations.
'Hacks' star Jean Smart has won best lead actress in a comedy for all three previous seasons of the HBO Max series, and is the favorite for the fourth. The show won best comedy series last year too.
'The Bear' set a record for comedy nominations with 23 last year for its acclaimed second season. This year, its third season is up for Emmys (even though its fourth has already aired). It got a more lukewarm reception, leaving its status coming into the nominations murky.
'The White Lotus,' HBO's darkly comic resort drama, submits all the members of its big ensemble cast in supporting categories, which they tend to dominate. Its Thailand-set third season included ballyhooed performances from Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Sam Rockwell among several others.
'The Pitt,' HBO Max's prestige medical procedural starring 'ER' veteran Noah Wyle, had reached the top tier of most prognosticators' Emmy prediction lists by the time its first season ended in April. Wyle, who was nominated five times without a win for 'ER,' could join Scott to make best actor in a drama a two-man race. And the show's other doctors and nurses, played by lesser known actors, could draw nominations if 'The White Lotus' cast leaves them any room.
Last year, the British Netflix production 'Baby Reindeer' was surprisingly dominant in the limited series categories. This year, it will surprise no one if the Netflix British crime drama 'Adolescence' does the same in the same categories. It was probably the most acclaimed show of the year. Fifteen-year-old Owen Cooper, who plays the 13-year-old accused of a killing at the center of the story, is likely to get one of several acting nominations.
How streaming has changed TV and the Emmys
All the shows are living in the splintered world of the streaming era, and the like the Oscars its most acclaimed nominees rarely have the huge audience they once did. While an impressive average of 10 million people per episode watched Wyle on 'The Pitt' at some point on HBO Max, according to Warner Bros. Discovery, 30 years ago an average of 30 million sat down on the same night and watched him on 'ER' on NBC.
The broadcast networks have largely become Emmy non-entities, with a few shining exceptions. ABC's 'Abbott Elementary' has annually drawn plenty of comedy nominations and should get its share this year. And Oscar-winner Kathy Bates is a front-runner for the best actress in a comedy Emmy for her role on CBS's 'Matlock.' She would be the first person nominated in the category from a network show since 2019, and the first to win it since 2015.
CBS will air the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 14. Nate Bargatze is slated to host.

Stewart, voicing the 'Elmo' puppet, claimed that he was hacked after someone 'guessed Elmo's password was Elmo! Elmo123. Elmo knows passwords should have more numbers, but Elmo only knows three numbers.' Stewart soon got the 'truth,' insisting Elmo needed to take responsibility for his actions. 'It was Elmo, but Elmo was radicalized by the manosphere. Elmo is part of the male loneliness epidemic,' Stewart as the puppet said. 'Elmo was doing his own research on flu shots. Six hours later, because of the algorithm, Elmo was moderating the QAnon Discord chat and building homemade bombs.' After Stewart reminded him of his influence on children, the muppet clapped back. 'Once again, the so-called tolerant left policing speech that's inconvenient to their woke dogma,' he said. 'Who's the real puppet now, Jon? You! You're the real puppet.' They then got to the heart of the matter after Stewart accused the character of sharing 'alt-right talking point word salad.' 'Elmo's alt-right,' the puppet said, joking he was pandering to save funding for public broadcasting and children's education programs. 'No reason to cancel Elmo's funding then.' U.S. President Donald Trump has encouraged Congress to revoke funding for PBS, the birthplace of 'Sesame Street,' accusing them of a liberal bias. 'Elmo can't go back on the streets, Jon! You have no idea what it's like,' Stewart said as the puppet. 'Elmo's too pretty to live under a bridge, Jon.' On Tuesday, the Instagram account for Elmo posted a statement saying that 'Elmo's X account was briefly hacked by an outside party, in spite of the security measures in place' on Sunday. 'We strongly condemn the abhorrent antisemitic and racist content, and the account has since been secured.' American Idol music supervisor and husband both found dead in L.A. home

Officers were conducting a welfare check at a home in the Encino neighborhood when they found the bodies of a man and woman with gunshot wounds. An American Idol spokesperson confirmed the deaths of Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca, both 70. The couple owned their home, according to public records. Los Angeles police say they are investigating their deaths as homicides but have not identified any suspects. 'Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her,' an American Idol spokesperson said in a statement. 'Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.' Kaye, an industry veteran, has also worked in the music departments of several other productions such as 'The Singing Bee,' 'Hollywood Game Night,' 'Lip Sync Battle,' and several Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.

Emmy nominations 2025, Canadian edition: Surprises, snubs and a big haul for The Studio
The Emmy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, marking a very good day for television's American-Canadian dual citizens and green-card holders despite the continuing cross-border tensions. Notably, The Studio, Apple TV+'s satirical series about the declining American motion picture business created by L.A.-based B.C. boys Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, led the way in the comedy categories with 23 nominations. That's a new high bar for nominations for a comedy in its first season, breaking the one set by Ted Lasso (20) back in 2021. Rogen, who stars in The Studio as a hapless studio head named Matt Remick, is himself up for three Emmys altogether: for his acting, his writing and his direction. But he's far from the only Canadian nominated, or the only one with two or more nominations. Catherine O'Hara's been recognized for her performances on both The Studio (of course) and HBO zombie drama The Last of Us (oh!). Jessica Lee Gagné is nominated for both cinematography and directing for her work on Apple TV+'s drama category-leading sci-fi hit, Severance. Indeed, there's are enough Canucks represented in the 2025 nominees that we might as well do a full Emmy Snubs and Surprises … Canadian Edition. While it's far from shocking that Academy of Television Arts & Sciences voters enjoyed a loving satire of Hollywood, one that shot in Los Angeles and premiered in the wake of the wildfires, the overall nomination tally for the Point Grey-produced show was still more than expected. Chalk it up to the well-connected Rogen – who was the subject of a cover feature in Esquire in March headlined 'Seth Rogen is the boss now' – and his ability to land cameos from many of Hollywood's biggest and brightest. Six of The Studio's nominations were for either outstanding guest actor or actress in a comedy series: Bryan Cranston, for his role as studio chief executive officer Griffin Mill; but also Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, Martin Scorsese and Zoë Kravitz, all for playing themselves on screen. Given all that love for The Studio's guest stars, it's hard to understand why Polley didn't get one for her first onscreen role in 15 years in the comedy series. The director played herself in the perhaps the best episode of the first season – directing a long take (the show's signature) that kept being interrupted by Remick's shenanigans. It was at least as good as Howard and Scorsese's cameos. That said, there may simply be more comedic competition in the guest actress performance category. Robby Hoffman, the American-Canadian who's hilarious as a new assistant in Hacks, definitely deserves her slot. In all three of his categories, Rogen is up against other Canadians. He's competing against Martin Short from Netflix's Only Murders in the Building for lead actor in a comedy series. But the big showdown is between him and his creative partner Evan Goldberg and The Rehearsal's Nathan Fielder; they're wrestling it out for awards for both writing and directing of a comedy series. The Rehearsal is simply the most original television show of any genre – so I hardly expect Fielder to triumph on either front. But, at least, he can sleep well at night knowing he did what he could to help prevent future aviation disasters. This hit Nunavut-set comedy starring Anna Lambe that originally debuted on CBC and APTN in January before hitting the Top 10 internationally on Netflix this spring has been warmly received south of the border. Indeed, it's currently nominated for outstanding new program at the Television Critics Association Awards. But North of North's lack of nominations at the Emmy Awards is not a snub – it's a choice made by Netflix. A streamer representative says that the Canadian comedy has been submitted for the International Emmy Awards, and you can only submit to one or the other. The TV Academy clearly didn't mind that Quebec composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer – who's responsible for the offbeat music and weird 'ulululu' sounds that provide running commentary on the characters in HBO's The White Lotus – ran off his mouth about working with series creator Mike White right before the third season aired. Well, the guy is a genius after all. Tapia de Veer is another Canadian double nominee: up for both for outstanding music composition for a series and for best main title theme music, even though some fans complained this season's wasn't as much of a banger as the first two. Season two of AMC's gothic horror series based on Anne Rice's books has a 100-per-cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and many thought it would make its Emmy breakthrough this year. It did, but only in makeup and hair. In the writing for a drama category, the show's producers had submitted a single episode – one penned by Canadian playwright Hannah Moscovitch and Jonathan Ceniceroz. Maybe it'll finally sink its teeth into the Emmys with its third season, which is currently shooting in Toronto, and features Moscovitch alongside fellow Canadian stage scribe Anusree Roy in the writer's room. While HBO's Canadian-shot undead drama didn't land as well with critics and audiences in its second season, it's still up for outstanding drama and has 16 Emmy nominations total. One of those is for outstanding casting for a drama series – and the nominated team includes Corrine Clark and Jennifer Page from Vancouver's Clark & Page Casting Inc. Hey, all those mushroom-zombies don't cast themselves. Critics went wild for this FX comedy about a gay Texas high school teacher when it premiered in the fall in the fall. But an allegation of on-set sexual assault levelled against creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez, dating back to a 2016 web series he created, seems to have derailed its Emmy chances. This is no surprise, but it's nevertheless an unfortunate twist of fate for the top-notch cast of the show including Colantoni, whose hilarious as a long-suffering principal. Not that you can even feel too bad for Colantoni, who has main roles on three TV series, all renewed, at the moment (Crave's The Trades, CBC's Allegiance and, despite it all, English Teacher).
