Emerald Necklace Conservancy going back to court to block renovation of White Stadium

A full text of the appeal is not yet available, but a press release issued by the ENC made three claims that it believes warrant relitigation: multiple violations of state law that prohibit commercial usage purposes; illegal sale of alcohol in a Boston Public Schools facility; and a violation of the George Robert White Trust.

Demolition of the 76-year-old stadium is nearly complete and construction is expected to begin soon after the remaining rubble is cleared.
Officials from the city's Landmarks Commission visited the site Friday morning and received a briefing on, among other details, materials to be used for new exterior and interior facades, seat cover colors, and paving materials.
The city's share of the project is expected to rise above the current $91 million estimate, with the ownership group of the new NWSL team,
'It's our mission to protect and support our public parks for future generations, even when it's hard,' said Karen Mauney-Brodek, president of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, in the release. 'We are optimistic that the courts will ultimately uphold the fundamental constitutional protections that all public recreation land in Massachusetts depends on, and protect Franklin Park and a public stadium for generations to come. And we're committed to partnering with the city, and anyone else, to make a fully public renovated White Stadium a reality.'

The team is to use the renovated stadium for portions of up to 40 days of the year, plus be responsible for year-round maintenance and operations.
A new eight-lane track will surround the new professional-level grass field, with BPS Athletics gaining new office space in the city-financed and rebuilt east grandstand, which also will contain student and community usage space.
The team is responsible for the construction of the west grandstand and a year-round restaurant being built just outside the stadium and still within the parcel.
One bone of contention from the ENC is a new spur of paved road off Pierpont Road behind the west grandstand that leads to a loading dock to be used by the team. That change of use for commercial purpose was not addressed in the ruling, the ENC said. The group says that such a change would require two-thirds approval from the state legislature in order to not violate the Article 97 law that prohibits a different use of public parklands.
Usage of other roads running through Franklin Park and new utility trenches also violate Article 97, the ENC claims.
The ENC maintains that the ruling also ignored trial testimony about the sale of alcohol inside the stadium, which the plaintiffs said would be in violation of state law.

Boston Legacy FC has said it hopes to begin playing its first season at White Stadium next March.
The east grandstand is not expected to be completed before late next year.
Linda Henry, CEO of Boston Globe Media Partners, announced in February that she was withdrawing from the investor group behind the soccer team.

Where does Sixers star Paul George land on the all-time greats list?

Everybody knows what Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George can do when he's right. While injuries have robbed him of his once elite athleticism, George is still somebody who can knock down tough shots and give any team he's on a shot in the arm on the offensive end. A 9-time All-Star, George led the Indiana Pacers to the Eastern Conference finals in 2013 and 2014 before also leading the Los Angeles Clippers to their only conference finals appearance in franchise history in 2021. His first season with the Sixers was marred by injuries, but George is still a top player when right. Bleacher Report put together a top 100 players of all-time list and George landed at No. 78 on the list: During a stretch from 2014 to around 2019, your nerdiest NBA friend might have made the case that George was one of the five best players in the league. That claim wasn't far off, as PG overcame a gruesome broken leg in the summer of 2014 to earn four All-NBA nods in the next five years while regularly getting top-five DPOY consideration. Though George's best MVP finish (third) came with the Thunder in 2019, he'll be best remembered for being the top threat on some excellent Pacers teams that reached the conference finals twice and for teaming with Kawhi Leonard on some very good but unlucky Clippers squads. A jack of all trades who could run the offense, spot up for threes, defend the opponent's top scoring threat and wreak havoc in the passing lanes, George was a fully scalable superstar during his prime. Looking to rehab properly from an offseason knee surgery, George will look to give the Sixers the player they were expecting when they signed him to a 4-year $212 million deal. If he can bounce back and give Philadelphia some help on the offensive end, then the Sixers should be in an excellent spot to contend.

ESPN gives Sixers a poor grade for Paul George signing after first year

Hindsight is always 20/20. At the time of the signing, the Philadelphia 76ers appeared to be the clear winners of the offseason after landing 9-time All-Star Paul George on a 4-year $212 million deal. He was expected to join Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to form a formidable Big 3 in the Eastern Conference. Instead, injuries decimated the roster. George played only 41 games in his first season with the Sixers as he battled through multiple knee injuries, an adductor issue, and a finger issue as well. He just recently underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his bothersome left knee after an offseason workout. As time moves on, the Sixers hope George can get back to the player everybody knows he can be. ESPN regraded the 2024 offseason moves. After giving the Sixers an "A" for the move in 2024, in 2025, the move has received a "D": George's 16.2 points average was his worst in a full season since his second season in 2011-12. And George's average 3-point shooting (36%) raised questions about his ability to transition to a more complementary role on offense. After playing only 41 games in his first season with the Sixers, George will spend this summer rehabbing after undergoing knee surgery last week. There's still time for George to be a productive part of a competitive Philadelphia team, particularly if his accuracy from 3 bounces back after he shot 41% in 2023-24 with the Clippers. Still, given George's age (35), it was always evident that the back half of a max contract might not be a good value. Not getting All-Star production in the first year makes it all but impossible for the 76ers to win that bet. Everybody knows how talented George is. One has to believe the Sixers will get a much better version of him in the 2025-26 season after undergoing this latest procedure to fully fix his health issues. Philadelphia is certainly baking on it as it moves forward with its plan to bounce back.

49ers superstar may have spilled the beans on new starter along offensive line

The San Francisco 49ers will have a new starting left guard this season, and tight end George Kittle may have announced who it's going to be. Aaron Banks, a 2021 second-round pick, held down the starting left guard job for the last three seasons. He signed a four-year, $77 million contract with the Green Bay Packers in free agency and opened a vacancy on San Francisco's offensive line. There's presumably going to be a battle for that starting LG job between last year's backup Ben Bartch and former starting right guard Spencer Burford. That may still be the case, but Kittle only specified one name while talking to the Athletic's Vic Tafur about some of the team's key departures from the offseason. "Deebo will always be amazing and Aaron played really well for us," Kittle told Tafur at the American Century Championship. "But I am excited about Ben Bartch because I love him as a guy. I am just looking forward to guys taking advantage of the opportunities — because there are a lot of them. We have a lot of weapons on offense — we even have one at left tackle in Trent Williams — and we should still be able to score points.' It wouldn't be a huge surprise if Bartch winds up starting considering how well he acquitted himself in brief action last year. Perhaps Kittle did only name him because of a friendship between the pair. However, Bartch appears to be the frontrunner for the job going into camp and Kittle may have let slip that there's no battle anticipated at left guard. Bartch re-signed with San Francisco this offseason on a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the club. He will be entering his sixth season after joining the NFL in 2020 as a fourth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Saint John's University in Minnesota. In five seasons he has played in 49 games with 22 starts. He has two starts since signing with San Francisco midway through the 2023 campaign. Both of those came last season. His 2024 season was cut short by a high ankle sprain, but it appears Bartch will have a chance to redeem himself as the 49ers' starting left guard this article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers depth chart: Ben Bartch may be new starting LG per George Kittle
