An Embattled Snoop Dogg Bites Back a Little But Mostly Keeps It Cool

An Embattled Snoop Dogg Bites Back a Little But Mostly Keeps It Cool

Yahoo10-06-2025
For 30 years, it seems that there has never been a pitch too wild for Snoop Dogg. He's done a reggae album, a funk album, two gospel albums, and even released an album on the blockchain. The Zelig of popular music, no collaborator is off limits: Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, Quincy Jones, Daddy Yankee, the Bee Gees, Limp Bizkit, BTS, Patti LaBelle, Prince Royce, Banda MS, Tiësto, Popcaan, Jelly Roll, Charlie Sheen. He's sold his own app, his own breakfast cereal, and recently opened a weed store in L.A., the city where he will likely serve as NBC's ambassador to the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
If any of this ever seemed incongruous with being gangsta rap royalty, it has never once affected the Teflon Dogg, America's lovable uncle. He gives a truckloads of money to charity, is generally regarded as one of the nicest people in the business, and has been consistently releasing solid if underheralded solo albums since the Clinton administration. Who's going to care if the guy sells an NFT or two?

That all changed in January when Snoop did a short DJ set at David Sacks' Crypto Ball, a Washington, D.C., schmoozefest held to celebrate Donald Trump's re-inauguration. Fans on social media rebelled, calling him a sellout, but Snoop stood his ground, telling The Breakfast Club, 'I'm not a politician. I don't represent the Republican Party. I don't represent the Democratic Party. I represent the motherfucking Gangsta Party, period point blank.' Snoop promised that his 21st solo album, Iz It a Crime?, would break his radio silence, fighting back against haters and doubters and reaffirming his legacy. Luckily, a defensive Snoop is still classically and effortlessly cool: 'Me and Dre at the So-Fi the only way I sell out,' he raps on 'Unsung Heroes'
'Unsung Heroes' is also the album highlight with its droning organ that sounds like it's stripped from an Ethiopian jazz record providing a hot slab of asphalt for Snoop to spit venomous invective. Tracks like 'Iz It a Crime?' with its breathy Sade sample and the breezy 'Sophisticated Crippin'' are less antagonistic as middle fingers go, listing his achievements and brushing off crumbs. The only other song that really seems to be the State of the Snoop address is 'ShutYoBitchAssUp,' which most assume is aimed at former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight, who has been disputing Snoop's ownership of the label: 'I can see why you mad/I bought everything you own/Now you in PC snitching on the phone.'
However, beyond those tracks, Iz It a Crime? isn't really the pugilistic battle record it's being made out to be. Instead it's another dependable Rhythm & Gangsta offering in a career full of them. There's his cadre of producers he's been using for the last 20-30 years (Battlecat, Soopafly, Denaun, Nottz, Rick Rock); there's the always liquid flow ('I'm talking lolos, a couple of cholos, la vida loco/Facts in a chokehold/Hey Siri, we need some more hoes'); and there's the occasional misstep (in this case, the narcotic would-be-club-banger 'Spot'). The duet with still-rising raunch-rapper Sexxy Redd ('Me and OG Snoop') is naturally electric, and Wiz Khalifa shows up like an old friend to get a little wistful ('Just the Way It Iz'). It really is just Snoop being the ever-reliable Snoop — and only a true keyboard warrior could be mad at that.

BTS Announce Their Big Return and Plans for Music in 2026

ARMY, the wait is finally over! After a two year hiatus, the K-Pop band BTS have officially announced their big return and already have major plans lined up for fans in the upcoming year. In a special Weverse livestream, the seven band members—j-hope, Jimin, Jin, Jung Kook, RM, SUGA, and V—revealed that they will be heading to the United States to work on some new music, according to a press release from HYBE. "We'll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year. Starting in July, all seven of us will begin working closely together on new music. Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member's thoughts and ideas. We're approaching the album with the same mindset we had when we first started," the band said. The album, which is set to be released in spring 2026, is just one part of BTS's big reunion. The band also announced plans for a world tour. Their last set of concerts, part of the Permission to Dance on Stage tour, were in 2022 with shows in only four different cities both in Korea and the United States. This time, they say, "We'll be visiting fans all around the world, so we hope you're as excited as we are." Fans don't have to wait too long to hear something new from the band thanks to the upcoming live album, 'Permission to Dance on Stage – Live,' which will be released on July 18, 2025. Welcome back, BTS! We've missed you!

BTS is back: The K-pop megastars return with first album in four years and global tour

BTS will release a new album and embark on a global tour in 2026, officially marking their return after completing mandatory military service. The group announced their comeback during a livestream with all seven members, which attracted over 7.3 million views. BTS continues to play a significant role in boosting South Korea's economy and global soft power, contributing substantially to the country's GDP. BTS agency HYBE confirmed Wednesday that the K-pop megastars would release a new album and go on tour in 2026, with the group's livestream announcement of their return attracting more than seven million views. The seven-member group had been on a self-described hiatus since 2022 while they undertook their mandatory military service, required of all men under 30 in South Korea due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North. Now discharged from service, the septet 'will travel to the United States in July to begin preparations for the new album and tour,' HYBE said in a statement. BTS announced their official comeback during a live broadcast on Tuesday, the first livestream with all seven members in nearly three years. The agency said the livestream attracted more than 7.3 million real-time views. HYBE said BTS 'plan to release their new album in 2026 and embark on a large-scale world tour'. Group member RM said during the livestream that the new album 'is officially set to be released next spring.' He added: 'Starting next spring, we'll, of course, be going on tour, so please look forward to seeing us all around the globe.' Their comeback album would be their first in four years since Proof, which was the best-selling album of 2022 in South Korea, with nearly 3.5 million copies sold. According to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, before their military service, BTS generated more than 5.5 trillion won ($4 billion) in yearly economic impact. That accounts for roughly 0.2% of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. Soft power bedrock BTS is the 'bedrock of South Korea's soft power,' Kim Yang-hee, an economics professor at Daegu University, told AFP. 'South Korea's soft power is being led by the private sector - best exemplified by the success of BTS and Squid Game - but it needs the support of public sector for democratic values such as freedom of expression,' Kim said. Last year's political upheaval, spurred by a martial law declaration, 'dealt a blow to such values,' she added. Former president Yoon Suk Yeol was formally stripped of office in April after being impeached and suspended by lawmakers over a 3 December attempt to subvert civilian rule, in which armed soldiers were deployed to parliament. South Korea 'would be served better by bolstering such (democratic) values and holding those accountable for the martial law,' Kim said. BTS, known for backing progressive causes, holds the record as the most-streamed group on Spotify and became the first K-pop act to top both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Artist 100 charts in the United States. There had been debate over whether BTS should be granted exemptions from military service—sometimes granted to Olympic medallists and classical artists who win top international awards—but pop stars do not qualify under South Korean laws. With the lack of public consensus on the matter, the members enlisted individually, beginning in late 2022.

Wattpad Guilty Pleasures That Haven't Aged Well

Don't deny it—we ALL have had an embarrassing Wattpad phase in our lives, where we gave into the FOMO of fanfics and erotica and found ourselves giggling at narratives that, honestly, would get cancelled today. 15-year-old me was having the time of her life on that website. I get why my parents were so pissed with me for spending HOURS on the website, reading words that should have never been written. And yet, every teenager was blushing under the covers reading those imaginary stories. It definitely was a phase of puberty I do not want to remember! Given that, there were a lot of tropes and narratives that Wattpad is famously known for—and a lot of them are questionable, to say the least. So here are 8 things we all have either read or come across on Wattpad that were sooo not normal!* *Disclaimer: some of the tropes mentioned below include sexual content and other controversial subjects. 1. "(Y/N), I'm so sorry. Steve wholeheartedly apologized as he rushed forward and embraced you from behind. You twisted in his arms and buried your face in his chest." - Avengers x Reader Y/N refers to your name. A good and cute romantic y/n like this excerpt does no harm to anybody. Except for when, Wattpad always goes the extra mile and has us imagining ourselves falling in love with inanimate objects, having weird powers, begging the BIGGEST red flag to love us back, and other extremely weird stuff. 2. "Taehyung had a girlfriend, Yuri, who cheated on him only for money. Taehyung was so madly in love with her that he couldn't see that she was just using him. When his girlfriend left him with another man after taking his money, he was furious. He loved her so much, but at the end, he got nothing. From that day on, he became a cold-hearted mafia and killed his girlfriend and her boyfriend and never trusted in love or relationships ever again." - Arrange Marriage with the MAFIA! This excerpt is just one example of the thousands of fanfics on Wattpad, which cater to every genre and audience. You have One Direction (of course), Star Wars, BTS, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, actors, actresses, singers, and even Donald Trump (Yeah, you read that right.) And trust me, nothing about these fanfics is normal. 3. "Harry just wrapped his arms around me and leaned his head on my shoulder, closing his eyes. I sighed, breathing in his comforting scent." - This Is More Than A Bromance: Larry Stylinson Speaking of One Direction, fans have gone ahead of "Harry x Y/N" and taken it up a notch—we now have "Harry x Louis" because, to fans, it's more than bromance. The trope of setting up band members with each other is so normal that fans don't bat an eye, but once you start reading the details, you can never erase it from your mind. 4. "Damn it! I know it's forbidden, but you're so tempting." - Touch Me Sir And of course, you have smut. And as always, it is unhinged, which makes me want to throw not about the extreme detail, but rather the characters involved. From a Monster energy drink can to Voldemort, Wattpad writers really leave nothing to the imagination. 5. "He looks around the classroom, and his gaze abruptly stops on me. I could see a small sort of smile work its way into his face." - Falling For My Teacher Okay, this one just crosses all ethical bounds. The staggering number of romance plots between a teacher and a student is seriously CONCERNING. It's not a romantic trope; it's a major problem, which should not be turned into a plot twist. Do better!Whoever has written this should really get their laptop privileges revoked. 6. "Girls weaker than her would probably be reduced to a puddle. That dark hair and dangerous smile would be able to convert even the saintliest of nuns." - Dominantly Yours This is where the fictional dominant alpha male, mob boss, and mafia characters come to life. There are tropes of the shy girl meeting the 'alpha male' and falling deeply in love, letting him do whatever he wants. Yeah, I'm having none of that! No controlling, no possessiveness, just none of this! We have to be better than this as a society. 7. "As she gazed back at the TV, I couldn't help inspecting her legs and feet. My foster sister had a pretty awesome-looking pair of legs: slim, long, flawless pale of sexy." - Foster Bond This is simply WRONG. I do not want to see anything with FAMILY in it. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply incorrect and wrong this is. Please stop. 8. "Before becoming a breeder mouse, this rich, half-blood snake bought me for a high price, especially as a male mouse. Now I'm sitting here in a car for the first time in my life, nervously staring at this snake's hot face." - Love Uncaged Hybrid mouse, snake, and human? This trope of the main character being EVERYTHING except a human can only be found on Wattpad. All stories copy Beauty and The Beast, where the 'not like other girls' girl falls in love with this hybrid animal/beast, and in return he protects her from the evil forces of the world. It's just downright creepy. After going through all of these, it is pretty much established that Wattpad does not contain too many normal reads. And to those who have been traumatized by these fanfics, you are not alone. There is an entire generation who has gone through it and somehow made it through as a better person (I can only hope). To people who do not know about Wattpad, I am so happy for you.
