Google launches Pixel 9a, rivaling Apple's iPhone 16e

Alphabet Inc.'s Google launched a redesigned version of its budget Pixel phone, upgrading the chip and battery life weeks after Apple Inc.'s lower-end iPhone 16e went on sale.
The new Pixel 9a, announced Wednesday, costs $499, in line with the price of last year's Pixel 8a. That compares with the $599 starting price of the iPhone 16e, which went on sale in February and is being positioned as a lower-end alternative to the iPhone 16. The Pixel 9a will be available in stores in April.
While Google's Pixel phones have won over some customers with their artificial intelligence capabilities and integration with Google services, the devices have never made a significant dent in the premium segment dominated by Apple and Samsung Electronics Co. But the lower-end products have helped the company slowly expand its overall market share, with IDC saying Google recorded its 'highest-ever smartphone volumes' in the third quarter last year.
The new iPhone 16e presents Google with fresh competition in the lower-end phone space. At the current price points, the Pixel 9a device is only $100 cheaper than the 16e, with both products offering similar specifications — other than the superior camera on the Google handset.
In addition to upgraded internals, the Pixel 9a brings a new design with flat edges instead of curved, matching the general look of the higher-end Pixel 9 introduced last year.
It also has a flat back, removing the camera bump from prior models. The back of the phone has two cameras: a 48-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel option for ultrawide photos. The main sensor's megapixels are a downgrade from the 64 megapixels on the 8a, but Google says the system has actually been improved to let in more light. It also adds a macro focus mode.
The 9a has a slightly larger screen than the 8a, moving from a 6.1-inch display to a 6.3-inch one. By comparison, the iPhone 16e has a smaller 6.1-inch size. The 9a's panel can also reach 2,700 nits of brightness outdoors, compared with a 2,000-nit limit on the 8a. The battery life is now rated at 30 hours on a single charge, up from 24. With a battery saving mode, it can last as long as 100 hours, Google says, an improvement over the previous claim of 72 hours.
The new model comes in black, white, light blue and pink. The 9a is being offered with the same 128 gigabytes of internal storage at the starting $499 price or 256 gigabytes of storage for $599. However, it replaces the in-house Tensor G3 processor with a new Tensor G4. Other changes include improved water and dust protection, moving from the IP67 standard to IP68.
The Pixel 9a was originally scheduled to go on sale this month, but Google pushed back the release as it works through a component issue that it said is impacting a small number of units.

Google's AI Breakthrough Tackles Hidden Deepfakes

A revolutionary AI-driven tool developed by Google in collaboration with UC Riverside researchers is setting new standards in deepfake detection. The system, known as UNITE, aims to combat the growing issue of manipulated media by identifying deepfakes in videos where faces are not present, challenging traditional detection methods. The increasing sophistication of AI-generated content has raised concerns globally, as it becomes more difficult for both the public and experts to distinguish between real and fabricated videos. Deepfakes, which use AI to superimpose or manipulate faces, have already caused significant harm by spreading misinformation and misleading audiences. These video forgeries have been used in everything from political manipulation to creating harmful viral content. Traditional deepfake detection systems primarily focus on facial recognition, scanning for anomalies or inconsistencies within the faces of individuals in videos. However, these methods fall short when the face is obscured or absent altogether, which is common in modern deepfake techniques. To address this gap, UNITE has been designed to look beyond faces, analysing the entire video frame to detect subtle visual cues that indicate manipulation. ADVERTISEMENT The system employs an innovative approach that involves scrutinising the background, motion patterns, and even the physics of the scene, which can reveal subtle discrepancies introduced by AI editing. For example, changes in the motion of objects, lighting inconsistencies, and unnatural background shifts are all telltale signs of deepfakes, and UNITE is trained to spot these signs with an exceptional degree of accuracy. According to the researchers, the system works by comparing the video under scrutiny with a vast database of real-world footage, assessing what is considered natural or typical for specific environments, actions, and movements. These advanced methods are powered by deep learning algorithms that continuously improve their ability to identify fake content as they process more data. The collaboration between UC Riverside and Google aims to make deepfake detection more accessible and efficient for various industries, including newsrooms and social media platforms. As misinformation continues to spread through manipulated content, news organisations are increasingly turning to automated systems to help verify the authenticity of video materials before publication. With UNITE, they gain a powerful tool that goes beyond face-based analysis to ensure the credibility of the content. This AI solution is timely, given the surge in social media videos and user-generated content. Many platforms have struggled with moderating fake content, and deepfakes are becoming an especially potent tool for those seeking to spread disinformation. This is particularly concerning in political campaigns, where fake videos can be used to sway voter opinions or tarnish reputations. UNITE's success could pave the way for more advanced technologies that can identify digital fakes across various forms of media, including text and audio, further protecting against the rising tide of fake content. The system also raises important questions about privacy and ethics, especially as it opens the door for new ways to track and monitor digital media for authenticity.

Google Unveils AI Tool to Decode Ancient Roman Inscriptions

Home » Emerging technologies » Artificial Intelligence » Google Unveils AI Tool to Decode Ancient Roman Inscriptions Google DeepMind has revealed a new artificial intelligence tool called Aeneas, developed to help historians study ancient Roman inscriptions, The Guardian reported. The tool is designed to analyze and restore Latin texts that are often damaged or incomplete. It identifies the origin and estimated date of the inscriptions and can suggest missing words. According to DeepMind, Aeneas was created in collaboration with historians, including Dr. Thea Sommerschield from the University of Nottingham. The AI was trained on a dataset of nearly 200,000 Latin inscriptions, covering more than 16 million characters. These inscriptions, found on monuments, tombs, and everyday objects, offer key insights into life in ancient Rome. However, many inscriptions are partially destroyed or worn. Aeneas uses linguistic and historical patterns to compare the damaged texts with similar examples from the 7th century BC to the 8th century AD. The tool can determine the Roman province of origin. It estimates the date of the inscription within a 13-year range. DeepMind reported that Aeneas can also propose likely words for missing text segments. It has been tested on inscriptions where the original wording is already known, delivering accurate results. The AI successfully interpreted famous examples like the Res Gestae Divi Augusti and linked similar texts across regions of the Roman Empire. Historians described the tool as 'transformative.' In a trial involving 23 researchers, 90% found Aeneas useful in their analysis.
