Joan Collins, 91, goes from acting royalty to the British sovereignty in Wallis Simpson role for new biopic about the Duchess of Windsor

Daily Mail15-05-2025
She made her name as the scheming Alexis Carrington in Dynasty.
Now, at the age of 91, Dame Joan Collins is taking on a very different dynasty - the British royal family.
The actress has been pictured for the first time as Wallis Simpson in a new biopic of the American divorcee who became the Duchess of Windsor after marrying King Edward VIII, following his abdication, in a new film based on her final years.
In the images for the movie titled The Bitter End, Dame Joan's hair is perfectly coiffed into Simpson's classic style, while flanked by Conclave actress Isabella Rossellini who plays the Duchess's formidable French lawyer, Suzanne Blum.
The photographs were taken in the grounds of Villa Windsor, the Parisian townhouse where Simpson and her royal husband hosted the likes of Diana Mitford.
Dame Joan, who will be celebrating her 92nd birthday later this month, said: 'In production for The Bitter End, I'm delighted to post the official first look photograph of Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, and her scheming lawyer, Maitre Suzanne Blum in the garden of her villa in Paris.
'Under Mike Newell's legendary direction, this is a truly exciting production.'
The film will chart 'the shocking untold story' of Sompson's twilight years when she finds herself ensnared in a menacing grip of her lawyer Blum's obsession and coercive control.
Blum worked on some notorious high society cases, most notably representing Rita Hayworth during her divorce proceedings from Prince Aly Khan.
By 1977 she was the only representative for the widowed Simpson, whose ill health left her practically confined to her Paris bedroom.
Biographer Hugo Vickers has described how the 'sinister' Blum took advantage of the royal's memory lapses and physical weakness and 'sacked' Simpson's other lawyers, meaning Blum had 'near full control of the Duchess'.
The Duchess of Windsor died in April 1986, with dementia, leaving her unable to speak. While Blum died eight years later in 1994.
On Thursday it was announced Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance and Harry Potter star Miranda Richardson will join the cast of the much anticipated movie.
Dance's casting has prompted speculation that he could reprise his role as Lord Mountbatten, who he portrayed in The Crown.
The former governor-general of India became close to Simpson following the abdication and escorted the Duchess to her husband's funeral in 1972.
As an American divorcee who seduced a British royal, Mrs Simpson has been dubbed the original Meghan Markle.
Simpson was at the center of the most scandalous love affair of the 20th century when she entered into a relationship and marriage with Prince Edward VIII, Prince of Wales and heir to the throne.
His obsession with Wallis subjected her to a brutal character assassination. She was called a temptress and sorceress who had cast a spell on the fairy-tale Prince to become Queen.
In 1936, King Charles's great-uncle Edward VIII's choice to abdicate the throne to marry her.
The move clashed with his responsibilities as head of the Church of England - sparking a constitutional crisis which left the nation stunned and beginning a rift within the family that never healed.
The couple went into exile in France at Villa Windsor, a 14-room Parisian townhouse, where they received guests including British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley and his wife Diana.
The Duke had hoped his exile would be brief but he was never allowed to move back to Britain, with his brother the new King George VI threatening to cut off his allowance if he tried to return without an invitation.
Edward's health deteriorated in the 1960s and towards the end of 1971, the Duke – a heavy smoker – was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Netflix's The Crown depicted how, in May 1972 – ten days before his death – Edward was visited by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
She spoke to him alone before appearing with just the Duchess for a photograph. Edward died on May 28, less than a month before his 78th birthday.
It was only after death that the tension in the family seemed to dissipate and Edward's body was returned to Britain, where it lay in state at Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel before his funeral.
Wallis died in 1986 aged 89 after years of frailty and suffering from dementia which led to her living as a recluse.
The Royal Family allowed her to rest next to her late husband on Windsor's grounds.

Spooky Jenna Ortega ruffles feathers in frilly dress at Paris premiere of Wednesday season 2

OO-La-la! Spooky Jenna Ortega ruffles more than some feathers in a frilly dress in Paris. The US star wore the brown frock for the French premiere of the second series of Netflix hit Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton. The show, based on the daughter from The Addams Family, will return next week after the original run became a ratings hit following its release in 2022. On the reception to the first series, Jenna, 22, said: 'I'm still very appreciative and grateful. "We didn't know that anyone was going to watch the show. 'You do these things and you don't know what's to come, so it was very overwhelming.' A former child star, Jenna was catapulted into the A list when Wednesday – viewed 252 million times and counting – launched in 2022. And by her own refreshingly candid admission, that rapid rise to the top was overwhelming. 'To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person,' she told Harper's Bazaar in May. 'After the pressure, the attention – as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.' The eight-month shoot in Romania had been challenging, with Jenna revealing: 'I was alone. Never had any hot water. The boilers in two of my apartments were broken, so I always took cold showers.' At least she'll be getting a warm welcome from Wednesday fans as the show returns to their screens. Victoria Beckham straddles shirtless husband David before he cools off in the shower as besotted pair share very steamy moment on their £16M yacht

Victoria and David Beckham shared a very steamy moment on their £16million yacht in romantic Saint Tropez on Wednesday. Posh and Becks' still looked so in love all these years later as they shared a longing glance while she was seen straddling her shirtless husband on the top deck. Catching some alone time after welcoming the Ramsays and Eva Longoria onboard earlier this week, the couple couldn't keep their hands off each other. David, 50, flexed his abs as he cooled off in the shower after cuddling up to his fashion designer wife, 51. The loved-up pair, who wed in 1999, proved their family woes aren't getting in the way of their marriage as they shared a very intimate moment together. The family has been thrown into turmoil in recent months as it has been claimed Brooklyn, 26, has become increasingly estranged from his famous parents after failing to attend any of his father David's 50th birthday celebrations in May. Posh and Becks' looked still so in love all these years later as she was seen straddling the shirtless hunk on top deck David flexed his abs as he cooled off in the shower after cuddling up to his fashion designer wife David and Victoria have been holidaying on their yacht, Seven, off the coast of the French Riviera with their family. The only child not present is their eldest, Brooklyn. Cruz and his girlfriend Jackie Apostel were also seen with the family as they took a separate boat to shore. Cruz, 20, joined his parents mid-trip following a romantic break with Jackie, 30, elsewhere. Brooklyn is the only Beckham child not on the getaway, having spent the week before in the same location with his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, and his in-laws. The eldest Beckham son looked to be missing out on a fun-filled trip, as the other offspring made the most of their trip together. Brooklyn has left the south of France to return to the U.S, where he was spotted looking glum on an outing in New York with his wife and mother-in-law, Claudia, on Tuesday. He narrowly avoided a run in with his family in France amid their ongoing feud, after both families were pictured in the same port just days apart. Romeo and Harper, 14, originally joined their parents Victoria and David for some time away, before they were later joined by Cruz and Jackie. The loved-up pair, who wed in 1999, proved their family woes aren't getting in the way of their marriage as they shared a very intimate moment together Victoria straddled David as he looked invested in his book The shirtless hunk flashed his muscular physique David showered off after taking a dip in the ocean David showcased her ripped abs Brooklyn and Nicola have continued to keep away amid an ongoing family feud, as the pair lived it up on a £85million vessel that dwarfs his parents' close by last week. Posh and Becks' traded in their £5million yacht for the much bigger vessel last year, and had been pictured on it sailing around Miami. The impressive looking vessel, understood to be worth £16million, was a significant upgrade on the comparatively modest 100-foot yacht reportedly purchased by Beckham in 2022. The football legend was said to have 'treated himself' to his original vessel in 2022 after being inspired by his maritime jaunts with close friends Sir Elton John and David Furnish - who often holiday at sea. A source told The Sun at the time: 'David had a look around some yachts in the summer, and decided to treat himself. He helped design the boat himself, and has been incredibly hands-on with everything. 'It's not an oligarch-style superyacht, but it's still pretty plush by anyone's standards. He was inspired after holidaying with Elton and David on their boat - and loves life on the water. 'There will be an area for the kids to snorkel, and the boat will be a brilliant base for the whole Beckham clan to have magical holidays abroad.' Earlier this week, Victoria gave a rare insight into her feelings about estranged son Brooklyn with a telling social media move. The football legend was said to have 'treated himself' to his original vessel in 2022 after being inspired by his maritime jaunts with close friends Sir Elton John and David Furnish - who often holiday at sea David went back to his book as Victoria headed for some shade David ditched the shirtless look for a green T-shirt The former Spice Girl has proved she is still keeping tabs on her eldest son's moves by 'liking' several of his social media facts. Notably, in the three-weeks spanning July 5 and July 26 - she liked every single one of his posts that didn't feature Nicola. All posts in which he was seen with his wife, were not acknowledged by Victoria. It is possible that these posts - four out of the 16 - were simply not seen by her. Victoria has not liked any of Nicola's posts in the same time period. Nor have the Lola actress and Brooklyn liked any of Victoria's. Brooklyn did, however, open up about the only thing he and wife Nicola argue over amid the ongoing feud with his famous family. Despite their troubles, the hunk suggested the couple, who wed in 2023, are still very much in the honeymoon stage and only disagree over the thermostat. He told GQ: 'By the way, that's the only argument me and my wife have, the temperature in the room. She loves it'. 'She runs cold, so she always wants it all hot all the time. I always run hot, and I like to have it a little bit colder, so we meet in the middle.'

I tested best supermarket wine dupes – Whispering Angel copy was delicious and only cost £13

IS it worth paying more for a bottle of well-known wine? Supermarket Aldi is currently selling its own offerings at up to 51 per cent less than popular brands. And it's not the only place you can get all the taste of posher plonks at a bargain price. 17 From celebrity pinks to cellar-worthy reds, here drinks expert Helena Nicklin gives us her pick of the best big-name wine dupes. Seek them out in stores to see if you can tell the difference when you are sipping. Brand: Whispering Angel, £22 Dupe: Screaming Devil Rosé, £12.97, Asda 17 WITH its excellent tongue-in-cheek name and at almost exactly half the price of the very famous and very pricey French pink, you know exactly where the plonk producers were aiming here. And the best bit is that it's not all about the great pun on the label as once it's in the glass this rosé is also very good to glug. Another Cotes de Provence like Whispering Angel, it hails from the south of France and just like the winged bottle, Asda's tribute has a similar elegant salmon-pink colour. With subtle peach and strawberry notes and a delightful salty tang, it's great stuff and slips down easily on a summery day. Rating: 4/5. Brand: Bread & Butter Chardonnay, £16 Dupe: Butter Side Up Chardonnay, £8.98, Asda 17 Blind tasting some of football biggest names to see who is the GOAT on and off the pitch WINE drinkers love the Bread & Butter-branded bottle of Californian white because it does exactly what it says on the tin – which is to offer an unapologetically bold, toasty and buttery chardonnay. But all of that doesn't come in cheap with the Napa Valley tipple retailing at not far off £20 a bottle. This Asda tribute aims to do the same and the clue is in the name as to where the influence for its flavours come from. It also hails from America's most famous wine region. But it's a shame this Californian copycat slightly misses the mark when it comes to balance, as the vanilla here feels a bit fake. My advice would be to drink it very cold or it can feel a tad sickly. Old fashioned but still great for those who love that creamy, comfort pudding- style of white wine. Rating: 2/5. Brand: Villa Antinori Toscana Rosso, £20 Dupe: Toscana Rosso, £7.25, Aldi ALDI knows a thing or two about creating decent dupes, and for this wine tribute it has gone properly classy with a more subtle version of a famous, posh Italian tipple that would set you back more than double the money. Luckily their version retails at a far more affordable price. It's made with a blend of international grapes including Tuscany's own sangiovese, which is the grape used to make chianti. This tribute tipple gives spiced, sour cherry and cocoa powder vibes like the original expensive Toscano Rosso, but with a tad more fruitiness and not quite as much going on. Still, it's a great red, ideal for sipping with spag bol and pizza – and the money you'll have saved will pay for a whole basket of goodies. Rating: 4/5. Brand: Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, £26.50 Dupe: Deluxe New Zealand Sauv Blanc, £8.49, Lidl THE famous Cloudy Bay white was the first to cause ripples with its fantastic branded Marlborough Sauvignon and I would say that it changed the wine world as a result. It became famous for a reason and certainly isn't a premium plonk you'd say no to. But it is very expensive even on a supermarket shelf and unfortunately for them, other producers are now catching up. That's good news for sippers on a budget though. This Lidl tribute tipple is exceptional for the price, giving you all the zesty citrus, cut grass and tropical notes you'd expect from high-end Cloudy Bay without being too much. In a taste test, this would give Cloudy Bay a real run for its money. Rating: 4/5. Brand: Louis Latour Bourgogne Pinot Noir, £21 Dupe: Tradition Pinot Noir, £7.99, Lidl FRANCE'S Burgundy region – which translates to Bourgogne in French – is the spiritual home of pinot noir, and Louis Latour is a big name in this field. A premium heritage with proper credibility and wine buff appeal, this name produces fine plonks and that means sipping one of these famous tipples will start from a high price base. At £21 a bottle it's seriously spendy even if it is one of their cheapest. This Lidl Burgundy is clearly a blend of lesser grapes from around the region but in my opinion that actually gives it a more accessible – if a bit rustic – juicy profile, with ripe, cherry spice. It looks the part, too. A top tribute for a fraction of the price. Rating: 3/5. Brand: Miraval Rosé, £20 Dupe: Monalie Rosé, £9.99, Lidl YOU have to hand it to Lidl for going all out with this Stars In Their Eyes-style blatant dupe of Brad Pitt's marvellous, Miraval pink wine. The bottle shape, label and capsule are all very familiar, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the A-lister vineyard's tipples. And to be fair it's not just a pretty packaging copycat, as the wine in the bottle is decent too. Another Cotes de Provence, just like Miraval, but for half the price of its more famous friend. This is equally dry and elegant, though perhaps a little less charming and less fruity. It might not be made by a star, but it's decidedly drinkable and looks posh. And for half the price, too. Rating: 3/5. Dupe: Coonawarra Barossa Cabernet, £6.69, Aldi THE uncanny likeness of this label from Aldi to the posh sip makes even wine experts like me look twice. The resemblance is certainly remarkable on the shelf. Australian brand Penfolds really sets the benchmark for premium shiraz from Down Under and its Max's cab sauv is something special. It's well worth treating yourself too, but at £22 a time it's hardly a budget bottle. This brilliantly blatant copy from Aldi does a great job with a fudgy, blackcurrant and eucalyptus-scented cabernet for an incredible £6.69. Okay, it hasn't quite got the same class and is a touch sweeter, but it's still cracking in its own right for the super-low price tag. And you can tell it's really from Barossa too, rather than being a generic, sugary blend. Rating: 5/5. Brand: Kylie Signature Rosé, £10 Dupe: Rosalie Rosé, £4.99, Aldi IF you squint, the squiggle on the label could be Kylie's autograph and Aldi's Rosalie also has a very similar-shaped bottle so you'd be forgiven for grabbing the copycat without realising. Kylie's vino is from the Languedoc region of France, however, and is a bit juicier and more generous than the prim and proper pinks of Provence, which is probably why it sells so well. The Rosalie is Provencal, but sadly that's not an upside as it proves why wine from here should never be this cheap-tasting, boggy and unfresh. A great dupe when it comes to doing a double take on the shelf, but when it comes to sipping I'd suggest you try other budget Languedoc pinks that give more Kylie-style flavours for less. Rating: 2/5.
