SAN FRANCISCO : Microsoft today said it was slashing a little less than 4% of its global workforce as it seeks to cut layers of middle management and leverage new technologies.
'We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,' a Microsoft spokesman said in an email.
The cloud computing tech giant did not disclose the total amount of lost jobs but as of June 2024 it employed 228,000 people, bringing the latest layoffs to about 9,000 people.
The job cuts follow a round in May that saw about 6,000 positions culled from its global workforce.
The company, which is advancing in its plans to deploy AI across all its products, said it was working to 'empower employees to spend more time focusing on meaningful work by leveraging new technologies and capabilities'.
'Even in the best of times, we have regularly adjusted our workforce to meet the strategic demands of the business,' the company added.
The company, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was one of the first tech giants to double down on artificial intelligence when the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 rocked the tech industry.

Microsoft signs deal to power Premier League's AI tools

A five-year 'strategic partnership' will see the UK football league, the world's most watched, migrate its 'core technology infrastructure' to Microsoft's Azure cloud-computing service, the company and league said in a statement. — AP Microsoft Corp has signed a cloud computing deal with the Premier League, a pact that will let the software company tout its AI technology to a captive audience of sports fans. A five-year "strategic partnership' will see the UK football league, the world's most watched, migrate its "core technology infrastructure' to Microsoft's Azure cloud-computing service, the company and league said in a statement on July 1. The Premier League's mobile apps and website will feature an artificially intelligent chatbot powered by Microsoft's AI services, as will the league's fantasy games. "This is the future of football,' Microsoft UK chief Darren Hardman said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. "It's data-driven drama, it's smarter stats, it's deeper stories, it's a better connection of the fan to what's going on.' He and Will Brass, the Premier League's chief commercial officer, declined to discuss the financial terms of the deal. Oracle Corp previously provided cloud-computing services to the league, but the arrangement expired at the end of the season earlier this year. Technology and sports marketing tie-ins are a crowded field, particularly in global football. Microsoft's Copilot brand is the sponsor for Beyond Stats, a service that provides game and team analysis for fans of Spain's top football division, La Liga. The stats that pop up during Germany's Bundesliga are festooned with the Amazon Web Services logo. Such deals are prized by technology companies because sports is the rare entertainment that people still watch live. In the 12 years since Microsoft struck a deal with the National Football League to place its tablets in the hands of team coaches, the tech industry has looked for creative ways to go beyond plastering their brand names on league signage. – Bloomberg

Global markets brush off deficit woes as Trump budget passes, US jobs impress

NEW YORK, July 4 — Wall Street stock indices finished at fresh records yesterday following solid US jobs data as President Donald Trump's sweeping budget bill successfully reached the congressional finish line. The US economy added 147,000 jobs in June while unemployment dipped to 4.1 per cent from 4.2 per cent, a sign of US labour market resilience despite the White House's wave of tariffs. 'We have a nice rally going, and the reason for that is that the employment data was stronger than expected,' said Peter Cardillo of Spartan Capital Securities, who noted that the market overlooked that the job additions included a heavy share of public sector posts. Markets also monitored progress on Trump's massive fiscal package, which extends tax reductions but also includes controversial cuts to social programmes and is projected to swell the US deficit. The House of Representatives approved the Bill yesterday shortly after the stock market closed, sending Trump a major legislative win. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended a holiday-shortened session at records. 'Market participants (and the economy) will be digesting the implications of the bill for some time, but it is fair to say that neither the stock market nor the Treasury market are living in fear of deficit forecasts,' said a note from Earlier, London's stock market and the pound recovered, having taken a knock Wednesday on rumours that British finance minister Rachel Reeves faced losing her job. Oil prices fell, with Opec and the cartel's crude-producing allies expected to announce a rise to output Sunday. Investors had been keenly awaiting the US government's monthly non-farm payrolls report, seen as one of the best data points on the health of companies and the labor market. 'The much stronger non-farm payrolls data means a July rate cut is now no longer in consideration, which is music to stock market bulls' ears', said City Index and analyst Fawad Razaqzada, because it indicates the economy is in good health. US markets are closed today for US Independence Day celebrations, but negotiators from several nations are racing to reach trade deals with Washington ahead of a July 9 tariff deadline imposed by Trump. Trump has said he will not push back his deadline to make more deals, though he and some of his officials have mentioned that a number were in the pipeline. — AFP

S&P 500, Nasdaq end at fresh records after solid US jobs data

NEW YORK, July 4 — Wall Street stocks surged higher yesterday following US jobs data that topped estimates as President Donald Trump's massive tax cut measure neared final passage in Congress. The broad-based S&P 500 jumped 0.8 per cent to 6,279.35, a second straight record. The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.0 per cent to 20,601.10, also a record, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.8 per cent to 44,828.53. Markets also shrugged off data showing an uptick in the US trade deficit in May, with both imports and exports declining. But congressional Republicans expressed confidence they would win final passage of Trump's sweeping fiscal package, which includes heavy spending increases for deportations and cuts in federal health care programs. Investors have greeted the extension of tax cuts, but have expressed concern at forecasts that the package will add US$3.4 trillion (RM14.4 trillion) in debt. US stock exchanges closed early yesterday and will be shuttered today for the July 4th Independence Day holiday. — AFP
