Parts of Cape Town facing nine-hour water shutdown next week
The first planned maintenance is scheduled for Monday, 14 July.
The City of Cape Town said planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Saxonsea, Avondale and Robinvale – The metro municipality said rehabilitation work and the installation of new water mains will be carried out on the water infrastructure serving the Saxonsea and Avondale areas from 8:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, 15 July. The entire Saxonsea, Avondale and Robinvale areas will be without water during this period.
Kirstenbosch – A City-appointed contractor will conduct a test shut-off of the water main in Bishopscourt from 10:00 to 14:00 on Tuesday, 15 July. The City of Cape Town said this forms part of the preparation for the full shut-off scheduled from 9:00 to 16:00 on Wednesday, 16 July, to enable the installation of a new connection on the existing water supply infrastructure.
Notably, residents in Kirstenbosch Drive, St Albans Close, Riverside Road, and surrounding areas will be without water during both periods.
Additionally, the Glen Garry Reservoir will shut down from Monday, 14 July, until Friday, 15 August 2025, for essential annual cleaning and maintenance.
The City of Cape Town said this process is critical to ensuring the continued quality and safety of its water supply.
'During this period, an alternate water supply is being rerouted to the Glen Garry area, but at lower than usual pressure. The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will supply the Wemmershoek pipeline, and the Blackheath Water Treatment Plant will supply the link pipeline. The combination of these water treatment plants will supply the Tygerberg Reservoir,' the municipality said.

School calendar: When do June-July holidays end?
Learners across South Africa will return to school on Tuesday, 22 July, as the third term of the 2025 academic year kicks off after the mid-year break. The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that Term 3 will run from 22 July to 3 October, forming part of the 200 school days scheduled this year. The school year began on 15 January and will end on 10 December. So far, the calendar has included two full terms, with learners enjoying a 27-day winter break since schools closed on 27 June. The fourth and final term will begin on 13 October and conclude just before the festive season school holidays. As learners prepare to return from the school holidays, concerns about municipal services in Gauteng schools remain in the spotlight. According to DA MPL Sergio Isa dos Santos, 536 schools in the province have faced water or electricity disconnections since January due to unpaid municipal accounts. 'More alarming is the confirmation that these schools collectively owe over R58 586 285,04, an amount the department admits it could not settle in the 2024/2025 financial year,' said dos Santos. Furthermore, he added that the department has promised to clear the debt by 30 June 2025, but 'no evidence has been provided to confirm this.' In response to mounting criticism, the Gauteng Department of Education said it had already disbursed the necessary funds to all affected schools. Also, the Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, confirmed that all designated schools received the money in June. 'The department wishes to confirm that it has provided the necessary funds to all schools for payment of their respective municipal billing accounts,' said Mabona. 'Once funds have been transferred, the schools and their respective school governing bodies assume full responsibility for ensuring that their municipal accounts are settled and paid on time.' Shack fire in Olievenhoutbosch kills family of 5, including 3 children
A devastating shack fire ripped through a home in Olievenhoutbosch Extension 25, Centurion, early yesterday morning, killing a family of five as flames engulfed their dwelling before firefighters could save them. According to Pretoria Rekord, this includes three children aged nine to 16 and a senior citizen. City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni confirms the incident. 'The incident was reported to our Emergency Communication Centre at about 05:04, and firefighting resources were immediately dispatched from Heuweloord Fire Station and Centurion Fire Station to the scene. These included two fire engines and a water tanker.' He says that when firefighters arrived, they found the fire had already destroyed the four-roomed shack dwelling. 'Sadly, five family members, including a senior citizen, one adult and three minors, were fatally burned by the devastating fire. The firefighters continued to extinguish the fire as it was still smouldering.' Mnguni says various role-players, including their fire safety section, disaster risk management section, Gauteng Emergency Medical Services, SAPS, Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services, Gauteng crime prevention wardens and community leaders, were also on scene and worked together to assist with incident management. 'Tshwane Emergency Services Department urges communities to remain vigilant and be cautious during winter to prevent and eliminate incidents of this nature that can have a disastrous effect on families and the community.'
