Idris's appointment signals a potential shift toward institutional leadership after years of military-dominated governance and stalled civilian transitions.
Dr. Idris brings a distinguished international and academic background to the role. He previously served as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and as Secretary General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). He was also a member of the United Nations International Law Commission.
An accomplished academic, Idris has held teaching positions in international law, jurisprudence, and philosophy at institutions including Cairo University, Ohio University, Khartoum University, and Beijing University, where he was named an honorary professor of law.
His appointment comes at a critical time as Sudan faces not only political fragmentation but also widespread humanitarian and security crises.

RSF controls major areas in El Fasher city in Sudan

Published July 13th, 2025 - 05:58 GMT ALBAWABA - The Sudanese army announced repelling a new attack by the Rapid Support Forces on El Fasher on Saturday, according to a military source quoted by AFP. The announcement came after the Rapid Support Forces said it took control over several key areas in the city located in western Sudan on Saturday. It is worth noting that El Fasher is the only major city not controlled by the Rapid Support Forces in the Darfur Region, which has been under siege for more than a year amid its war with the army since April 2023. The military source reported that the Sudanese army, supported by allied armed factions, recaptured Shalla Prison and the Central Reserve Police headquarters in the southwest of the city, inflicting "heavy losses" on the Rapid Support Forces. Meanwhile, a source in the RSF told AFP that the latter had been in complete control of these same sites since Friday, in addition to the livestock market located south of El Fasher. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

RSF seize Um Dehilib town in Sudan's South Kordofan

June 7, 2025 (KADUGLI) – The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and an allied rebel group have seized the town of Um Dehilib in Sudan's South Kordofan state from the army, as the military continues to lose ground in the region. Also Read Sudanese army foils drone attack in Port Sudan The capture comes amid reports from a local rights group of escalating attacks by the RSF on civilians in the neighbouring state of West Kordofan. Since February, the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, has been fighting in a coalition with the RSF against the Sudanese Armed Forces. RSF soldiers announced the capture of Um Dehilib, an area east of the main SPLM-N stronghold of Kauda, in a video posted on Saturday. The army has not issued an immediate comment. The Sudanese army and its allies have been ceding territory in South and West Kordofan to the RSF coalition since late May. Separately, the Dar Hamar Emergency Room, a local advocacy group, said on Saturday that RSF troops had attacked the village of Bani Badr in West Kordofan, beating civilians, looting, and seizing fuel for water stations. The group stated that the village had served as a shelter for nearly 10,000 displaced people and warned of a dire humanitarian situation after the RSF confiscated Starlink internet devices, cutting off communications. 'The population and displaced people in the area… are threatened with the risk of death by thirst,' the group said in a statement, adding that a lack of water and secure routes was also causing livestock to perish.

Israel recovers body of Thai hostage in special operation in Gaza

Published June 7th, 2025 - 09:14 GMT ALBAWABA - Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with a playful and theatrical gesture on Friday as she arrived in the Albanian capital to attend the sixth summit of the European Political Community, an informal forum that brings together 47 European states. Rama put down his umbrella and knelt down in front of Meloni as she exited her vehicle, his hands joined together in a gesture reminiscent of prayer. Meloni responded with a lighthearted remark after seeing the scenario on video: "You need to stop that, Edi." Later, she joked with reporters, "He only does it to be as tall as me," mocking their obvious height difference—Meloni is 1.63 meters tall, while Rama is over two meters. This is not the first time that Rama has greeted Meloni in this way. As a birthday gift, Rama knelt down in front of her in Abu Dhabi a few months ago and handed her a scarf. The two presidents' close political and personal ties are shown by their recent bilateral cooperation. With support from the Italian government, two controversial migrant processing facilities have been constructed in Albania: a repatriation facility in Gjader and an unutilized facility in Shengjin. Meloni has said that during her visit, she will not be visiting either place. The visit comes only days after Albania hosted the 2025 Giro d'Italia, Italy's premier cycling event, sparking media speculation about a political favor between the two nations. Even while no official link has been confirmed, the symbolic move highlights the expanding political and cultural relations between Tirana and Rome. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
