Careme – Season 1 Episode 3 Recap & Review

The Review Geek07-05-2025
A Recipe for a Disaster
Episode 3 of Careme begins with the orphan being released from custody. He immediately heads back to see Careme, who patches up the wounds on his hands. Apparently this guy kept quiet and remained loyal to the cause, which is perhaps just as well given Fouche is starting to tighten the leash!
There's disorder in the streets and things soon turn violent when Catherine and Henriette's carriage is attacked by angry bystanders. This appears to be the work of Germaine after the letter circling the party last episode. They smash the glass and look set to hurt them, until the police show up on horses and break things up.
Catherine is furious, especially when she returns to Talleyrand. She believes it's the work of De Stael, playing 'armchair revolutionist'. Just to make matters worse, the carriage has been painted with the words 'Death to Bonaparte' too.
Talleyrand visits Careme and explains that Germaine's pamphlets have caused everything to begin cracking at the seams, and Talleyrand wants to try and patch things up before it turns ugly. This stems from using Careme as a spy to gather the pamphlets over at her apartment.
At the Hotel de Salm, Careme shows up to see Germaine. He shows off the menu he's been working on but also uses this opportunity to briefly scout the place too, although that's quite difficult given a couple of men are here already. However, he promises Germaine a big surprise for the starter.
The dinner looks set to go ahead and as Germaine shows at Talleyrand's place, there are light hostilities between her and Catherine. The pair grin through the games and keep up appearances, all whilst Careme heads into Germaine's room to find the pamphlets.
What Careme finds instead though is one big scandal. Charlotte has been having an affair with Charles, Talleyrand's son, and it turns out she's pregnant. Their child will be heir if Napoleon Bonaparte and Joséphine don't have kids. This is a huge scandal and it's just what Careme needs to stir the pot. As he sneaks out the room, Charles winds up seeing him but doesn't say anything. At least not initially anyway. He does confront Careme in the stairwell later on, but they agree to keep each other's secrets… for now.
Back in the kitchen, a guy called Grimod Reyniere arrives, grilling Careme and messing with the kitchen. Careme is not particularly happy as he waltzes about and tries the food, but it turns out Reyniere is actually the biggest food critic in France, so his opinion is not one to take lightly.
Careme knows that this is serious and works on his dishes with renewed focus, showing the others how he intends to present this dish to the guests. While this is going on, Talleyrand pleads with Germaine to show off the original pamphlet, which he wants to destroy, otherwise if Fouche finds it first, she'll be killed for defying Bonaparte.
The dishes are presented, just as Fouche shows up at the party with his soldiers, and the food critic (among many others) are impressed by Careme's talents. Well, for a bit anyway. He also has a lot of backhanded insults toward the young chef, including throwing shade at his father.
Now, Fouche is intending to find these pamphlets, which he believes is hidden behind the barrels in the wine cellar, which happen to show off a secret entrance to Germaine's study, which includes a printing press.
Now, earlier on Careme actually snuck in here and removed the pamphlets, replacing them with alternate versions that praise Napoleon. This also explains why Careme was late announcing the food to the party just moments before.
Anyway, Fouche uncovers the pamphlets and is left with egg on his face when he finds out they're not genuine. However, the inspector checks the printing press and realizes the letters are identical and as a result, Germaine is arrested.
Talleyrand encourages her to flee, for the sake of France's future, prompting Fouche to turn his attention over to Bailly. He tries to persuade Careme's father to play ball, and shows off his son's handwriting. Fouche has sussed out who Careme is and admits that the guy is in very murky waters right now.
The only way out is to present proof to Fouche of Talleyrand's connection to the attack, and then Bailly can go free and return to his son. However, Fouche is also aware of where Germaine is too and has spies working for him. Spies which include Henriette.
The Episode Review
Alas, the plot thickens! With Henriette working on the side of Fouche, and Germaine having gone on the run, we now see a lot more of Fouche's ruthlessness and competence in his job. He's incredibly adept and has a great eye too. The printing press segment was particularly ingenious, working well to showcase exactly how tough he's going to be to beat here.
Careme is caught in the middle but the scandal involving Charlotte and Charles could yet become a vital bargaining chip going forward, we'll have to wait and see.
For now though, Careme has done well to keep things interesting, although the pacing is a tad slow at parts. While the actual history of this time period has clearly been shaped and changed to fit with the theme of the show, it's still an enjoyable watch, all things considered.

Pamela Anderson and co-star Liam Neeson recreate iconic Titanic scene at Naked Gun premiere in Berlin after sparking romance rumours

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson recreated a memorable Titanic scene at the Naked Gun premiere in Berlin amid rumours they are dating. The Baywatch icon, 58, and the Taken actor, 73. appeared at the UCI Luxe East Side Gallery on Thursday for the latest screening on the promotional trail. The pair star in the upcoming crime spoof comedy film together, with Pamela playing Beth and Liam portraying Frank Drebin Jr. Following in the footsteps of his bumbling father, Detective Frank Drebin Jr. must solve a murder case to prevent the police department from shutting down. Rumours have been swirling recently that the pair are seeing each other, however it has been suggested since that they merely have a close friendship. The chemistry between the pair is clear to see as Pamela shared a photo on her Instagram of the two messing around on a boat. In the video, Pamela acted as Rose during the iconic scene in the Titanic, as Liam held her waist from behind in the role of leading man Jack. Pamela looked stunning in a dark green strapless gown which featured a neck scarf. Liam wore a grey suit and looked smart as he hugged her from behind. She penned as the caption: 'From the London to Berlin… this tour has been full of smiles, laughter, and so much love... Thank you to everyone who came out to giggle with us (and watch on the big screen). NYC next!' On Tuesday, the alleged couple couldn't keep their hands off each other during the red carpet premiere in London. Fans have been unsure about the status of the co-stars' relationship after Liam admitted he 'loved' Pamela earlier this year - ahead of the film's release on 1 August. They further fuelled speculation as they put on a passionate display, cosying up on the red carpet. For the outing, Pamela stunned in a strapless purple gown with a flowing train and accessorised with dainty dazzling jewels. The pair appeared in good spirits as the actress planted a sweet kiss on Liam's cheek while they posed for the cameras. It comes after Liam joked that his favourite part of making the film was filming 'the sex scenes' with his co-star Pamela. He joked about their intimate scenes as The Sun reported the pair were given an intimacy co-ordinator on set. The star explained: 'I'd never had one before. But she was in the background. There was no kind of, 'OK! Excuse me!'. Pamela portrays a nightclub singer, who comes to Police Squad for help following the murder of her brother, in Akiva Schaffer's slapstick comedy continuation. Pamela added that the intimacy co-ordinator knew when to walk away and joked that she stormed off, with Liam claiming she threw her hands up in the air and said, 'I can't take this! This is too hot for me. I'm going for coffee'.

Amazon shoppers ‘beyond impressed' as ‘crystal-clear' portable projector gets slashed from £130 to £45

KEEN to bring the big-screen experience home this summer? Head to Amazon. The online retailer has knocked down the price of a budget-friendly, portable projector by 65% – and it's got shoppers raving. Do enough digging through Amazon's deals pages, and you'll find sky-high savings on all sorts of tech, from portable power banks to over-ear headphones. This portable home projector is from a brand we in the Shopping team haven't come across before, and haven't tested ourselves. But it's racked up over 250 five-star reviews on Amazon, with buyers buzzing about its auto-focus and keystone adjustment features, as well as its cracking picture quality. This isn't some top-of-the-range projector that'll blow your socks off with all the bells and whistles - you'll have to spend much more on premium devices that offer 4K picture quality. But if you're after something to watch the odd film, catch the football, or a spot of gaming, it's a solid choice that leaves minimal impact on your wallet. The iWIMIUS Portable Projector is packed with a range of features that are pretty eye-catching, for a device that now costs less than £50. Its auto-focus and keystone correction are clever bits of tech that sort the image out for you, so you don't need to faff about adjusting it manually. It even has smart features to line the picture up perfectly with your screen and dodge obstacles like plug sockets or furniture that might get in the way. The sound's no slouch either - it's got built-in 20W speakers with Dolby Digital support, delivering audio that one customer has described as "clear, balanced, and surprisingly deep.' You can also use its two-way Bluetooth to turn the projector into a standalone speaker or hook it up to soundbars and other devices using HDMI ARC for that proper cinema surround sound. As for the picture, it looks pretty impressive for the price. It gives you Full HD 1080p resolution and can handle 4K content too, with an 800 ANSI brightness that keeps colours vivid and details sharp. Setting it up at home should be a doddle too. The adjustable base lets you tilt it up to 15°, so you can stick it on a coffee table or shelf and still get the right angle. Plus, it's small and smart-looking, so it won't stick out like a sore thumb in your living room or bedroom. It doesn't come with apps like Netflix or Disney+, but you can plug in a TV Stick or similar device to stream your favourite shows and films. Shoppers are loving it, with an overwhelming majority of reviews rating it at five stars. 'An excellent projector for those on a budget!" wrote one customer. "I have to say I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this little beauty but I am beyond impressed!' Another said, 'The picture is a lot better than I expected, really sharp and great vibrant colour. "Same for the sound – surprisingly full and loud, again with options to select different sound presets or adjust manually.' A third wrote: 'This projector delivers an amazing home theatre experience with sharp visuals, vibrant colours, and excellent performance. Crystal-clear picture quality.' Amazon's calling this a limited-time deal, so it's unlikely to stay this cheap for long.
