Rs 70 lakh gold robbery was insider job, say Pune cops
The police arrested the staffer and are searching for his two aides in Rajasthan and Delhi. However, there has been no recovery of the robbed gold ornaments yet.
The police established that the robbery was an insider job after the staffer gave inconsistent replies. He claimed that two men threatened him at gunpoint. Discrepancies in the staffer's phone location and records, after he narrated the sequence of the robbery to the police, exposed his lie.
Senior Inspector Ravindra Gaikwad of Bund Garden police told TOI, "We arrested Dharmesh Prabhulal Rebari (19) of Rajsamand in Rajasthan. We have identified his two accomplices, who are his childhood friends. Dharmesh moved to Mumbai about one-and-a-half years ago. Many employees of the logistic company are from Rajsamand, and Dharmesh joined the company with their reference, earning a salary of Rs 14,000 a month.

ED questions Robert Vadra for 5 hours in Sanjay Bhandari-linked PMLA case
Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was on Monday questioned for about five hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari and some others, official sources said. The 56-year-old Vadra arrived at the federal probe agency's office located in central Delhi after 11 am. He was accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi, MP from Kerala's Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. The session ended shortly after 5 pm, during which Vadra once went out during lunch hour. The businessman's statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. They said he may be called again for questioning as he allegedly "failed" to answer certain questions regarding his financial links with Bhandari and his family members. He was called by the agency twice last month for questioning in this case, but he sought deferment of his summons as he reported being unwell during the first summons and later had to travel abroad after obtaining approval from a local court. Vadra is being investigated by the agency in three different money laundering cases, including two pertaining to alleged irregularities in land deals. He was questioned by the ED in April for three consecutive days in a case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 Haryana land deal case. The businessman is also being investigated by the anti-money laundering agency in a case related to alleged financial irregularities in a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner. The case linked to Vadra and Bhandari pertains to the ED findings reported in a chargesheet in 2023, alleging Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house located in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra." Vadra has denied that he owns any London property directly or indirectly. Terming these charges as a political witch hunt against him, he said that he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends. The ED is expected to file a fresh chargesheet in the Bhandari case following the recording of Vadra's statement. The 63-year-old Bhandari fled to London in 2016, soon after the Income Tax department raided him in Delhi. He was recently declared a fugitive economic offender by a Delhi court, paving the way for confiscation of his properties worth crores of rupees. A UK court, sometime back, refused the Indian government's application seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case against him, virtually ruling out chances of his being brought to the country to face the law.

Gangster with Mukhtar-Jeeva links shot dead in Muzaffarnagar encounter
The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) shot dead Shahrukh Pathan, a wanted sharpshooter with alleged links to the gang of Sanjeev Maheshwari alias Jeeva and gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, during an encounter near Bijopura Tiraaha on Chappar-Rohana Road in Muzaffarnagar early Monday. Shahrukh Pathan, wanted in multiple murder cases, fired 10 rounds before STF retaliation (Sourced) According to STF additional superintendent of police (ASP) Brijesh Kumar, the gunfight began around 1:05 am after the team received a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle in the Chapar area. The STF set up an ambush to intercept the car. Shahrukh Pathan, 34, a resident of Khalapar in Muzaffarnagar, allegedly opened fire on the STF team, discharging over 10 rounds. He was critically injured in retaliatory firing and declared dead on arrival at a local hospital, confirmed additional director general of police (ADG) Amitabh Yash, who oversees law and order and the STF. Over a dozen criminal cases were registered against Pathan in Muzaffarnagar, Sambhal, and Haridwar. These included charges under the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Gangsters Act, and Gunda Act for murder, extortion, criminal conspiracy, and witness intimidation. Pathan's criminal activities began in 2015 when he and an accomplice allegedly murdered Asif Zayada in police custody at Muzaffarnagar railway station. Zayada was being escorted from Naini Jail for a court hearing in a murder case. While in jail, Pathan developed links with gangsters Jeeva and Mukhtar Ansari, becoming a trusted shooter in their network, according to the STF. In 2016, he escaped from police custody in Muzaffarnagar's Civil Lines area and went underground. During this period, he allegedly carried out multiple contract killings. In 2017, he reportedly shot dead Haridwar-based trader Amit Dixit, mistaking him for property dealer Subhash Saini, on instructions from Jeeva. That same year, he allegedly killed Yasin, father of Asif Zayada and a key witness in his son's murder. A reward of ₹50,000 was subsequently announced for his capture. He was later arrested in Uttarakhand and sentenced to life imprisonment along with Jeeva in the Dixit murder case. However, after being released on bail six months ago, he was booked again in Sambhal's Baniyather police station for threatening witnesses and remained absconding. The STF recovered a .30 mm Beretta pistol, a .32 mm revolver, a 9mm country-made pistol, over 70 live cartridges, and a car, without number plate, from the encounter site. Officials suspect that Pathan was planning fresh extortion and violent activities in western UP. A fresh FIR has been registered under the Arms Act and other relevant sections. Police are now working to trace his network and remaining associates. Jeeva, to whom Pathan was closely linked, was shot dead inside a Lucknow courtroom in 2023. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time former UP MLA, died of cardiac arrest in 2024. He had been in jail since 2005.

Decide on resuming Siri Jagan committee set up to process dog bite compensation cases: Kerala HC to govt
Kochi: High court on Monday insisted that the state govt decide on the resumption of the Justice S Siri Jagan Committee, which was constituted to process compensation claims from victims of stray dog attacks. The bench of Justice C S Dias was considering multiple petitions related to the stray dog menace in Kerala. HC noted that around 9,000 applications for compensation are currently pending before the committee and observed that the govt cannot remain inactive on the issue. If the govt fails to take a decision, the court said it would appoint someone to continue the task and indicated it may ask Justice Siri Jagan to carry on until a decision is made. One of the petitioners, Keerthana Sarin, was attacked by stray dogs on May 30 while returning home from Nedumangad town in Thiruvananthapuram. She highlighted the hazardous conditions faced by residents due to the stray dog threat. In a related matter, the secretary of the Ranni-Perunadu grama panchayat challenged an order directing the panchayat to pay compensation to a victim of a stray dog attack. The matter was adjourned to July 21. In another petition filed by T N Manoj Kumar of Panampilly Nagar, Kochi, HC directed the Kochi corporation to ensure that T G Sunil Kumar does not shelter stray dogs in his residence without a valid license under Section 437 of the Kerala Municipality Act. The court noted that 60 stray dogs were being housed there without proper permission. This matter was adjourned to July 28.
