Time of India5 hours ago
HYDERABAD: Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Sunday stated that the Congress govt will be spending 22,500 crore on the implementation of the Indiramma housing scheme, under which 4.5 lakh houses are being constructed for the poor in Telangana.
Construction is already underway for 1.1 lakh Indiramma houses, with work on the remaining units set to begin soon.
The govt has sanctioned 4.5 lakh housing units in the first phase of the scheme. The govt is extending 5 lakh financial assistance to the scheme beneficiaries for the construction of houses.

'Opposition conspiring'
Addressing a public meeting held as part of the distribution of Indiramma housing sanction letters in the Madhira assembly constituency, Bhatti noted that of the 1.1 crore families in Telangana, approximately 93 lakh are benefiting from one or more welfare schemes implemented by the Congress govt.
"The opposition is fearful and conspiring against us because our welfare programmes are transforming the lives of the poor for the better. Regardless of their conspiracies, this govt will continue to work tirelessly for the people. The aspirations of the poor can only be realised through the Congress govt," he said.
He added that had the previous BRS govt fulfilled its promise to build 2-BHK homes for the poor during its 10-year tenure, there would have been no need for the current administration to invest thousands of crores in the Indiramma Housing Scheme.
The present govt, he asserted, will boost revenues and channel them into welfare initiatives, enabling the poor to live with dignity.
He further stated that 93 lakh families across the state are currently receiving fine rice free of cost through fair price shops. "We are providing gas cylinders at 500 each and supplying free electricity up to 200 units for the poor. The govt is also distributing Cheyutha monthly pensions to the elderly, persons with disabilities, and single women," he added.

Congress backs PM Modi's BRICS stand, vows firm fight against terrorism

New Delhi: Backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's firm stance on terrorism at the BRICS Summit, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari on Monday expressed his complete faith that India will fight terrorism with full resolve and determination. His remarks came in response to PM Modi's statement at the global summit, where he called terrorism 'the most serious challenge facing humanity' and emphasised that condemning terrorism must be a matter of principle, not convenience. Speaking to IANS, Pramod Tiwari supported the Prime Minister, stating, 'At the BRICS Summit, voices should have been more vocal against terrorism. The platform should also raise social, economic, and global concerns of its member nations. India has consistently spoken for global peace and justice. "I have full faith that our country will fight terrorism with unwavering determination. I wish those responsible for the recent attack in Pahalgam had been caught — it would have revealed who trained and supported them. Such information is crucial and would have commanded greater respect globally.' Tiwari also took a swipe at US President Donald Trump, who recently lashed out at the BRICS alliance and warned of an 'additional 10 per cent tariff' on countries aligning with what he termed 'anti-American policies.' 'BRICS is for protecting nations who are in it. President Trump had previously issued similar warnings during his visit to India. At that time, Prime Minister Modi should not have laughed or responded lightly. He should have stood firm and reminded Trump that BRICS works on its own principles and is committed to its founding objectives,' said Tiwari. The Congress leader criticised the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that extensive consultations had been held with political parties and acknowledged that 'no one was satisfied' with the current status of the electoral rolls. Reacting to the development, Tiwari said, 'We are not satisfied with the Election Commission of India's response. The documents required for voter list revision are unnecessarily complicated and impractical. If the process is designed to make it difficult for traditional voters who are against the BJP, Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, and minority voters, to remain on the rolls, then this raises serious questions about the Election Commission's intent. If the ECI wants to remove them.' He added that while some groups have approached the Supreme Court, others are considering forming 'people's courts' to ensure fairness. 'The Congress has always upheld the voter's right to participate in democracy. We will continue to stand by that principle and ensure that all necessary documentation is provided,' he asserted. Tiwari also took aim at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar, particularly targeting Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan. During a political rally in Saran district on Sunday, Chirag announced that he would contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections and urged his party workers to prepare for all 243 constituencies in alliance with the BJP and JD(U). Mocking the move, Tiwari remarked, 'The NDA in Bihar is a sinking ship. Chirag Paswan, despite being the son of a respected leader like Ram Vilas Paswan, is trying to stay afloat in turbulent political waters. If he's contesting all 243 seats, it means internal cracks have widened and many alliance members are already looking for the exit door ahead of elections.' He continued, 'It's clear that NDA leaders are aware they are going to lose many seats. Their desperation is evident. While they are forming the central government, they are losing their grip on the state. This creates confusion among their own allies.' In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Chirag Paswan's LJP had contested 137 seats but managed to win only one, Matihani. Despite this, Chirag currently holds a Lok Sabha seat and serves as a Cabinet Minister in the BJP-led central government, which includes JD(U) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) as key allies.

Kerala Crime Branch questioned Union Minister Suresh Gopi as part of Thrissur Pooram ‘disruption' probe

The Kerala Police confirmed on Monday (July 7, 2025) that State Crime Branch (CB) investigators had questioned Union Minister Suresh Gopi as part of a sweeping government-ordered inquiry into the alleged disruption of Thrissur Pooram in 2024. However, CB officials averred that the agency preferred to keep the time or where they questioned Mr. Gopi confidential for now, given the politically sensitive nature of the investigation. The Thrissur Pooram controversy took on political overtones as it dominated the campaign narrative in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Gopi found himself at the centre of the dispute after he rode in an ambulance, allegedly flashing its overhead lights and sounding the siren, to the festival office, which the police and district authorities had declared off-limits for vehicles and civilians on the night of the iconic fireworks. Seva Bharathi, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), owned the ambulance. Subsequently, the police and the Motor Vehicles department (MVD) booked Mr. Gopi and the operator on the charge of misusing an emergency response vehicle for casual transport. Mobile phone videos of Mr. Gopi parleying with apparently distraught Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms went viral on conventional and social media in the run-up to the poll day on April 26, 2024. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition quickly accused the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) of throwing the Thrissur Lok Sabha poll to Mr Gopi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the constituency, by 'wilfully scuttling Thrissur Pooram to stoke Hindu majoritarian religious sentiment among voters.' Mr. Gopi's opponent, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader V.S. Sunilkumar and Congress' standard-bearer in the constituency, K. Muraleedharan, accused the State police of allowing the BJP candidate to gain political mileage by emerging as a champion of Thrissur Pooram lovers, a significant electoral bloc in the constituency. The alleged disarray in the conduct of the festival had caused considerable disquiet among the mammoth festival crowd and the general public, prompting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to order a three-tier investigation last year. Subsequently, the CB formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the cognisable offences detailed in the preliminary police enquiry report about the festival 'disruption'. The SIT will likely submit its report to the Additional Director General of Police, Crime Branch, H. Venkatesh.

‘Intellectually dishonest': Congress slams govt assertion on India being among ‘most equal' countries

The Congress on Monday termed as 'fraudulent' and 'intellectually dishonest' the government's assertion that India is among the world's most equal countries, and said the Modi government cannot simply wish away the stark reality of deepening inequalities by 'doctoring data'. The opposition party's attack came after an official release, citing World Bank data, said inequality in India has come down significantly between 2011-12 and 2022-23, making it the fourth-most equal country globally. The Congress demanded that the Press Information Bureau (PIB) must clarify as to the origins of this press release and retract it immediately. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, 'Aap chronology samajhiye. The World Bank released its Poverty and Equity Brief for India in April 2025. Immediately after, the Congress released a statement identifying the several warning signs that the World Bank had flashed for poverty and inequality in India – including warnings about government data underestimating inequality.' Three months after its release, on July 5, the Modi government's drumbeaters and cheerleaders in the 'Press (mis)Information Bureau' issued a press release making the 'staggeringly out-of-touch' claim that India is among the world's most equal societies, Ramesh said in a statement. In a press statement issued on July 6, the Congress once again warned that the government's data interpretation was based on the limited availability and the uncertain quality of existing data, as well as to the selection of dated benchmarks to measure poverty, he said. Now it emerges that the Modi government was not only 'negligent' in its analysis of the World Bank report, it was also outright 'intellectually dishonest', Ramesh said. He claimed that to arrive at its conclusion, the Modi government deliberately chose to use two different benchmarks: consumption inequality in India and income inequality in other countries. 'A comparison between two entities requires us to use the same metric to judge them. This is not just a fundamental principle of economic analysis, but one of common sense' Ramesh said. The choice to measure consumption inequality in India was also deliberate, he said. Ramesh pointed out that consumption inequality is always less than income inequality since the rich save a large part of their income. 'When we compare India's income equality to that of the rest of the world, India performs extremely poorly: India is ranked 176 out of a total of 216 countries in 2019. In other words, India is not the 4th most equal society – it is actually the 40th most unequal society in the world,' he claimed. 'Income inequality in India has grown, and worsened in the last few years under the Modi Raj,' Ramesh said. Wealth inequality in India is even higher than income inequality, reflecting the disproportionate gains of the elite in the last 11 years of cronyism, he said. 'Such fraudulent analysis, being published through the auspices of the PIB, reveals one of two things: a disturbing lack of talent in this government, or an equally disturbing lack of intellectual integrity. The PIB must clarify as to the origins of this press release and retract it immediately,' Ramesh said. 'There has been a dangerous trend of such random ad-hoc statements and declarations coming from the Modi Government's officials,' he claimed. 'In May 2025, we saw a similar flurry of incoherent and diverging statements from NITI Aayog officials on the size of the Indian economy. The political leadership's penchant for distortion and propaganda has clearly trickled down to officials as well,' Ramesh said. By 'doctoring data', the Modi government cannot simply wish away the stark reality of what is staring us in the face – growing and deepening inequalities, driven by its mindsets and policies, he said. In its release, the government attributed the reduction in inequality to various initiatives and schemes pursued during the last decade. '…India's Gini Index stands at 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country in the world, after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus,' the statement said. The Congress on Sunday had expressed concerns over the recent World Bank report that said poverty and inequality remain concerningly high in India, and requested the Centre to take steps, including bringing in GST reforms and ending corporate favouritism. Citing the World Bank's poverty and equity brief for India in April 2025, Ramesh had said three months after its release, the Narendra Modi government's 'drumbeaters and cheerleaders have begun spinning the World Bank's data to make the staggeringly out-of-touch claim that India is among the world's most equal societies'. He had said the good news that the Centre is so desperately trying to wrangle out of this report is partly attributable to the limited availability and uncertain quality of government data as well as to the selection of benchmarks to measure poverty. 'No country that has a poverty rate of 28.1 per cent can make a justifiable claim to being one of the most equal societies in the world,' the Congress leader had said.
