Civil defence rescues iPhone from 10-metre cliff in Jelebu
According to Kosmo, Jelebu district Civil Defence officer, Lt (CD) Mohd Najib Abdul Karim said his team received a call at 11.45am on July 12 from a woman in her 20s asking for help to retrieve her phone which had fallen down a steep hillside.
'Upon arriving at Bukit Batu Sawa, the Civil Defence team found the victim and her friend at the location. Civil Defence personnel wore personal protective equipment (PPE) and prepared equipment to descend the steep hillside.
'The depth to descend was estimated at about 10 metres with slippery rock surfaces. The gadget was successfully brought up and handed over to its owner. The operation was completed at 1.38pm,' he told the Malay daily when contacted.
The special service, he said, was the first time his team had received such a request, as they are usually involved in operations helping accident victims, flood victims and other emergencies.

KUALA LUMPUR: Aidil (not his real name) admits he lost his temper when he brandished a replica gun during an argument with a man whom he said had been very rude to his mother. "I only wanted to scare him into thinking I would shoot him after he used very course language and was very rude to my mum. "I didn't actually want to shoot him," said the 20-year-old, who was sentenced to 240 hours community service for the incident last year. Aidil is one 26 people serving their community service orders today at the 2025 Beret Community Service Order Programme at the Civil Defence Force's (APM) Pahang headquarters. He said he was working as a security guard in Bentong at the time of the incident, and did not expect the brash decision would land him in trouble. "The pistol could fire only metal pellets. I bought it for RM300. I had no intention of hurting the man. I only wanted to scare him, nothing more. "I did not expect to be arrested by police just hours after the incident, charged in court and eventually sentenced to 240 hours of community service," he said. Aidil was charged with possession of a replica firearm and making criminal threats. He must complete his community service within two years under the supervision of the Pahang Social Welfare Department. Pahang Social Welfare Department director Khairul Amri Ahmad said there were 52 people in the state, including children, youths and adults, who are under community service orders. He said today's programme was designed to build inner strength, discipline and resilience, as well as helping them to develop physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally in facing life's challenges. Khairul Amr added that those involved had committed various offences, including theft, sexual offences, traffic violations, rape, drug offences, threats, abuse and illegal street racing. Aidil's lapse in judgment in dealing with life's challenges is not unique, even among among older and supposedly more mature people. Forty-year-old Aida (not her real name) said that the extreme stress of living in Kuala Lumpur drove her to abuse her 18-month-old niece, which left bruises on the child's back. "The hardship of living in a cramped room made it difficult for me to control myself, and I ended up hitting the child. "At the time, I was also caring for my four children, aged 1 to 14. "I never imagined that when the child was taken to the hospital for seizures, the doctor would discover bruises on her back, which led to a police case. "The damage was done, and I was sentenced to 240 hours of community service," said Aida, who now lives in Cameron Highlands. For Salmah, 19, from Temerloh, she became involved in a mule account syndicate last year, which resulted in legal consequences when police traced a deposit of RM2,000 made by an individual into her bank account. Gaza civil defence says Israeli fire kills 25

(AP pic) GAZA CITY : Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli fire killed 25 people on Saturday in the Palestinian territory devastated by more than 21 months of war. Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP the dead included nine people killed in three separate air strikes in Gaza City. Eleven people were killed in four separate strikes near the southern city of Khan Yunis, while two were killed in a drone strike in Nuseirat refugee camp, he added. Bassal said three people were killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting for aid in three separate incidents in northern, central and southern Gaza. One of the three was killed 'after Israeli forces opened fire on people waiting for humanitarian aid' northwest of Gaza City, the agency said. Witnesses told AFP that several thousand people had gathered in the area. One of them, Abu Samir Hamoudeh, 42, said the Israeli military opened fire 'while the people were waiting to approach the distribution point', located near an Israeli military post in the Zikim area, northwest of Sudaniyah. The Israeli military told AFP that its troops fired 'warning shots to distance the crowd' after identifying an 'immediate threat'. Body of elderly woman found floating near Kuching City Mosque
Police are investigating the case and advised the public not to speculate to protect the victim's family. – Bernama photo KUCHING (July 26): The body of an elderly woman was found floating face down near the Kuching City Mosque around 10.45am today. Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the discovery was made following a distress call from a member of the public. Upon arriving at the scene near the Pangkalan Panjang jetty, police found the fully-clothed body of a woman believed to be a local Malay in her 70s. 'The victim was wearing a blue, long-sleeved shirt, blue long pants and a pink headscarf. 'No identification documents were found on the victim,' Alexson said in a statement. A medical team from Sarawak General Hospital later confirmed the woman's death. Police are investigating the case and advised the public not to speculate to protect the victim's family.
