Cops probe ‘flogging' of Prime Minister effigy during Turun Anwar rally

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka. PETALING JAYA: Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal. Police later said they were investigating the burning of the caricature under the Sedition Act 1948 and Penal Code. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Residence of Tun Mahathir's grandson broken into: Police to review CCTV footage from surrounding areas

According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. 28 Jul 2025 02:12pm Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad - Photo by Bernama KUALA LUMPUR - The police will examine the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding areas near the residence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandson in Bukit Ledang, here, which was reportedly broken into last Wednesday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the residence itself was of limited use as it only retains footage for 24 hours, making it difficult to aid in the ongoing investigation. "The CCTV system at the house was installed in the 1990s and has limited storage capacity,' he told a press conference today. "The incident is believed to have occurred more than 24 hours after the police report was made by the owner of the house, which meant the footage had already been overwritten,' he told a press conference here today. According to Mohamed Usuf, the house is an old house that is rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. "So far, the police have recorded statements from three individuals, namely Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard and a maid. The police are also analysing the evidence received, including fingerprints, and this may take some time," he said. According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. It is understood that the incident was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the gate at the back of the house had been cut and her employer's room was ransacked. When asked about the case involving singer Shila Amzah, who claimed to have been verbally attacked by another singer, he said the police would record statements from two more witnesses to complete the investigation paper. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding areas following a break-in at the residence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandson in Bukit Ledang. The incident, reported last Wednesday, resulted in the loss of jewellery worth RM1.8 million. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the house, installed in the 1990s, had limited storage capacity and retained footage for only 24 hours. 'The footage was overwritten by the time the police report was made,' he explained during a press conference. Investigators have recorded statements from three individuals, including Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard, and a maid. Fingerprint analysis is also underway, though Mohamed Usuf noted the process may take time. The break-in was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the rear gate cut and the employer's room ransacked. The house is reportedly an old property rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. Separately, when asked about singer Shila Amzah's claim of being verbally attacked by another artiste, Mohamed Usuf said police would record statements from two more witnesses to complete the investigation. - Bernama
