At any big international bridge tournament, the chances are you'll end up playing a star name or two. And while it's always a privilege, I find it hard to stop my inner voice whispering how incomparably better they are than me; I'm just a sitting duck. I have a mantra, however, which helps: 'Anyone is beatable.' So I couldn't help laughing when I read an interview with the German champion Sabine Auken recently, in which she revealed she has a rather different mantra: 'Anyone can beat me.'
We're both right – there's no place for fear or hubris at the bridge table. Sabine, though, is an unusually tough opponent. She has won countless medals, plays on the German open team with her partner, Roy Welland, and in 2013, became the first woman ever to win the European open pairs. This deal helped seal her and Roy's victory:
(* shortage) South led a diamond. Sabine cashed the ♦️KQJ, unblocked the ♠️Q, came to hand with the ♣️Q and cashed the ♦️A. North, knowing a heart or club discard would give her an extra trick, threw a spade. No good: three rounds of spades later, North had to discard on the ♠️10. Dummy was down to ♣️AK8 and the bare ♥️J. North chose to throw the ♥️K, whereupon Sabine crossed to the ♣️A, came back to the ♣️10 and exited with a heart. South, to spare North from having to win with the ♥️Q and play a club to dummy's ♣️K, went for a 'crocodile coup': he hopped up with the ♥️A. But Sabine still made 12 tricks when he then had to concede the ♥️6 to her ♥️7!

Thelo Aasgaard in Rangers transfer 'talks' as manager's warning rings loud and clear amid Ibrox solution

The Norway international only joined Luton Town in January from Wigan Athletic but looks to be on the move again Thelo Aasgaard is reportedly in talks to join Rangers from Luton Town. Hot on the heels of landing Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth, Russell Martin is keen to add another midfielder and the Daily Mai l claims that Aasgaard is discussing a move to Ibrox. ‌ The 23-year-old has one cap for Norway and only joined the Hatters from Wigan Athletic back in January. ‌ However, they are open to doing a deal that would see them make a not insignificant profit on Aasgaard, who they shelled out £3million to land just a few months ago. However, a second successive relegation saw them drop into League One this summer and the financial challenges that come with it. And after international boss Stale Solbakken warned that Aasgaard's place in his squad was at risk if he was to remain in the third tier of English football, a switch to the Scottish Premiership and the chance to play European football would allay any fears over not adding to his solitary cap. "League One is too low a level," he said. "Championship is no problem, with his development that level is good enough, but with League One, that's where it stops. There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively." Aasgaard has already admitted that the 2026 World Cup next summer is a factor when deciding whether to stay at Luton or not. He said: "It's a difficult situation for the club," he told VG. "I felt I performed well in a difficult situation for the club. ‌ 'It's hard to say. Everyone is on vacation now. What I can say is that the World Cup in a year is a big goal for me." Liverpool-born Aasgaard began his career at Anfield, and qualifies for Norway through his father. He made 163 appearances over five years with the Latics, netting 30 goals. His versatility appeals to Martin, with the player able operate anywhere in midfield or out wide, and has been utilised as a striker on occasion.

Man Utd-linked star fuels transfer rumours by 'liking' Instagram post

Dusan Vlahovic has fuelled speculation that he could be on the move this summer after 'liking' Jude Bellingham's post celebrating Real Madrid's Club World Cup win over Juventus. The 25-year-old striker joined Juve for a fee of £60million from Fiorentina with weighty expectations on his shoulders and a reputation as one of the finest young talents in European football three years ago. But while Vlahovic has scored 58 goals in 145 appearances in that time, the forward has struggled to live up to his hefty price tag – and Juve's Coppa Italia triumph remains his own major title with the Italian giants. Rumours have been swirling that Vlahovic could be set for a big-money transfer and there would be no shortage of potential suitors should Juve put the Serbian up for sale, with Fenerbahce and Al-Ahli credited with an interest. Manchester United have also been heavily linked following a poor campaign for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee – and recent reports emanating out of Italy claimed Juve were prepared to offer up Vlahovic in exchange for Jadon Sancho. It's believed the two-time European champions would also willing to part with one of Douglas Luiz or Timothy Weah to lure Sancho from Old Trafford to Turin. There was another twist in the tale on Tuesday night as Vlahovic was left as an unused substitute in Juve's Club World Cup loss to Madrid in Miami, where Gonzalo Garcia scored the only goal of the game. It meant Vlahovic made just one start across Juve's campaign and it appears the Serbia international was less than impressed to be snubbed again by Igor Tudor… if his social media antics are anything to go by. Shortly after the final whistle, Madrid midfielder Bellingham took to Instagram to write, 'Next step, quarter finals. Great graft from the boys!' – and eagle-eyed fans soon realised that Vlahovic had 'liked' the post, perhaps shedding some light on his frustrations. Unsurprisingly, many Juventus supporters have not been overly happy to see one of their own players seemingly revelling in the club's elimination in the Unites States. The last-16 defeat marks the end of an especially disappointing season for Vlahovic, in which the ex-Fiorentina man managed a total of just ten league goals for Juventus. Vlahovic' current contract in Turin is due to expire in 2026, meaning Juve must decide whether to sell the striker now or risk losing him on a free transfer in 12 months' time. Earlier this month, Juve general manager Damien Comolli revealed that he was in talks with Vlahovic to determine what the attacker 'has in mind' amid uncertainty over his future. More Trending 'I spoke with Dusan last week. The player should return soon and I want to speak to him to find out what he has in mind,' Comolli said. 'He is a top player. Something did not work [last season], I realise it is not enough. 'I do not know who is to blame. I have to speak to the player and understand because there is no doubt that he is a top player. 'We need to understand what his intentions are.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
