Ukrainian drones force suspension of Russian electronics factory
Moscow said falling debris from intercepted drones fell on the facility, while Ukraine claimed a direct hit on the site.
'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' regional governor Oleg Nikolayev wrote on Telegram.
'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory,' said Nikolayev, adding that there were no casualties.
The site is one of the main factories producing electronic components in Russia.
Ukraine's General Staff said in a statement that it had targeted 'a military-industrial complex facility, where antennas for Shahed (drones) were manufactured'.
Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis.
Ukraine regularly launches retaliatory drone strikes in response to Moscow's aerial bombardments, which began with its full-scale offensive into Ukrainian territory more than three years ago.
'Strikes on the facilities that support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation will continue until it is completely stopped,' Ukraine's General Staff added.
Governor Nikolayev said that the decision had been taken to 'temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees'.
Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Ukraine said it shot down 'dozens' of Russian drones over its western Rivne region.
The massive Russian attack saw Ukraine's western neighbour Poland scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, Warsaw's Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

From Sabah to Canberra: Penny Wong says her story reflects Australia's multicultural strength
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a bilateral meeting with Wong at the Prime Minister's Office in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Putrajaya on July 11, 2025. — Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong says close people-to-people ties are key to long-term friendship between Australia and Malaysia. She said this is also supported by the shared history of both countries and a strong belief in the value of regional cooperation. Advertisement 'The friendship between Australia and Malaysia is built on our shared history and the close relationships between our peoples,' she said in a 1-minute and 25-second video posted on her official Instagram account, @senatorpennywong. The video includes footage from her childhood in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, as well as her appearance at the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last week. Wong added that this year marks the 70th anniversary of Australia-Malaysia diplomatic relations, and she expressed support for Malaysia's role as Asean Chair. 'We will continue working with our regional partners to support a shared vision for a more secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific, in which Asean plays a central role,' she said. Wong, who was born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, said her life story reflects the reality of modern Australian society. 'My story, like that of many Australians, is a modern Australian story — almost half of all Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas,' she said. She emphasised that this multicultural background is one of Australia's key strengths in building strong international relationships, including with Southeast Asian nations. 'It helps us find common ground with people across the world, including in Southeast Asia,' she added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mechanisms to probe judges exist under constitution, says Azalina
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said judicial independence is vital to maintaining public confidence in the justice system. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The government today reminded all parties that the Federal Constitution outlines clear mechanisms for dealing with judicial misconduct amid concerns over judicial interference and integrity. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said Articles 125(3) and (4) empower the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to establish a special tribunal to investigate allegations of misconduct against judges, on the advice of the prime minister after consultation with the chief justice. Advertisement She said additional safeguards are provided under Article 125(3A), which allows the chief justice to refer breaches of ethics to the Judicial Ethics Committee, and Article 125(3B), which supports a written code of conduct, currently the Judges' Code of Ethics 2009. 'This framework ensures that the judiciary remains free from political or external influence, thereby upholding the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law,' Azalina said in a statement today. 'The executive and legislature have no power to interfere in issues of judicial ethics. This is essential to maintain public trust in the justice system.' Azalina said the government acknowledged the concerns raised by the Malaysian Bar during yesterday's judicial independence march and pledged to address them transparently and in accordance with the law. She said the Bar would be invited to contribute to an ongoing comparative study on judicial appointments, led by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department, together with select committees from the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara. 'Furthermore, the concerns raised by the Malaysian Bar must be examined in accordance with the Federal Constitution, the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) Act 2009, and all other applicable laws,' she said. A document allegedly containing excerpts from a JAC meeting held in May went viral on social media last weekend, raising concerns from various parties. The extract of the purported minutes said that the former chief justice had raised concerns about the integrity of a candidate for an administrative post in the judiciary. Claims were made that the judge in question had once attempted to influence the outcome of a case in favour of a specific party, and had sought the transfer of a fellow judge for holding a differing view. Police are investigating the alleged leak of the JAC meeting minutes under the Official Secrets Act and two other laws. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
