How many Top 100 all-time rivalries is the UNC football team part of?

USA Today10-07-2025
Rivalry games always bring out the excitement in college football.
Despite their recent, seemingly never-ending stretch of mediocrity, the North Carolina Tar Heels have a long, successful history dating back to the 1900s.
UNC's best stretch arguably occurred between 1977 and 1982, when it finished ranked in the Top 15 five times. North Carolina does have six-consecutive bowl appearances, but no postseason victories since the 2019 Military Bowl against Temple.
Part of the Tar Heels' long history, dating back to their first season in 1888, are some of the top rivalries across college football.
In the Athletic's recent rankings of college football's Top 100 rivalries, UNC finds itself on that exclusive list three times. North Carolina-Virginia ranks 42nd all-time, North Carolina-NC State is 57th and North Carolina-Duke is 77th.
You might be surprised to find the Tar Heels-Blue Devils rivalry lower on this list, but that annual game doesn't generate the same excitement when compared with men's basketball. UNC leads Duke in the all-time football series, 66-41-4, but the boys in royal blue won last year to snap a 5-game losing streak in the series.
Though North Carolina-NC State is a one-sided rivalry on the field as of late, with the Wolfpack winning four consecutive clashes (and nine of the last seven), this series has no shortage of exciting moments. The Tar Heels lead the all-time slate, 68-40-6, but can they add a 69th victory over Thanksgiving weekend?
UNC-UVA, dubbed "The South's Oldest Rivalry," is the closest series of the above three rivalries. North Carolina leads the all-time series, 67-58-4, including a 41-14 drubbing in Charlottesville during 2024.

Former Oregon Duck Nikko Reed makes big-time INT in Hall of Fame Game

Football finally returned on Thursday night following a five-month long hiatus as the Los Angeles Chargers took on the Detroit Lions in the NFL's annual Hall of Fame Game. Not many starters participate in the preseason in today's league, so the matchups typically consist of young guys and players on the fringes of the roster attempting to carve out a career. This is the case for former Oregon Ducks cornerback Nikko Reed, who has reportedly been one of the biggest bright spots in Chargers training camp. He signed with Los Angeles after going undrafted this year, but he isn't letting that label hold him back or define him. Reed intercepted a pass in the first quarter during the contest against the Lions and returned it 60 yards, coming just five yards short of a score. Some defensive backs are pure gamblers, either giving up big plays or adding to their own highlight reel. This is not the case with Reed. In 13 total coverage snaps against Detroit, the former Ducks star didn't allow a single catch. He also recorded three tackles and a pass breakup to go along with his pick. According to reports from a variety of Chargers reporters, Reed has impressed all summer and has a great shot to make the team. Fans to return to Bank of America Stadium for Panthers Fan Fest

Fans will pack into Bank of America Stadium in Uptown on Saturday to get their first glimpse of this year's Carolina Panthers team on the field. Carolina Panthers Fan Fest: Open practice, entertainment, and community support Carolina Panthers Fan Fest will be the first opportunity to see the players practice. The biggest news was when head coach Dave Canales said he's playing Bryce Young and the rest of the starters for at least the first two preseason games. This is a big change from last year. The Panthers starters did not play until the final preseason game in Canales' first season. The coach went on to say those reps in-game, even prep the night before, are just too valuable to pass up. Meanwhile, Channel 9 has watched the team the past two weeks. The offense and defense have been back and forth on who won the day. The nod goes to defense with multiple turnovers and Canales even described them as dominant. From here, the focus turns to Fan Fest. Outside of the pandemic, this is the first time in years fans haven't been allowed at training camp. 'Just that gratification of making a play and hearing the fans, making a tackle,' Canales said. 'Making a nice catch or a big run. The successes that come with that and being able to feed off the energy of the fans.' 'Obviously this being my first time to make a first impression to the fans over here,' said wide receiver, Tetairoa McMillan. 'Being able to showcase my talents in front of everybody. At the end of the day, they pay me to make plays. I'm going to try to make plays as much as I possibly can.' Canales said they'll be out here in full pads for Fan Fest. The full schedule: 5:00pm: Gates open 5:30pm: Pre-practice entertainment begins 6:30pm: Players begin on-field warmups 7:30pm: Practice begins Around 8:45pm: Practice ends and autograph session begins Post Practice: Fireworks and laser show begins

Auburn's Alex McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list

Alex McPherson is receiving national attention ahead of his "comeback" season. Preseason award watch season is upon us, and one Auburn Tiger is on the radar. Alex McPherson is set to return to the field full-time after an illness sidelined him for most of the 2024 season. He has caught the attention of the Palm Beach Sports Commission as he is one of 30 kickers included on the Lou Groza Award watch list that was released Friday afternoon. McPherson was 49-of-49 on extra points and was 19-of-20 on field goals with a long of 53 yards as a freshman and sophomore during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In one game last season, he connected on all three extra point attempts while going 1-for-2 on field goals in Auburn's win at Kentucky in October. He has worked to regain strength and is poised to make a strong comeback in 2025. 'It gives me some confidence that my body can hold up, that I can trust it and not have to worry about it every step of the way like I had to last year,' McPherson said in an interview with Jeff Shearer of 'I think this is definitely one of the strongest groups in the country. We have three really strong kickers, we've got three strong punters. This group is definitely special and it's going to be something to look out for this year.' USC's Caden Chittenden, Georgia's Payton Woodring, and UAB's Jonah Delange join McPherson on the Groza watch list this season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8.
