Van der Dussen to lead new-look South Africa in T20 tri series
Top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen will lead South Africa during next month's Twenty20 tri-series with New Zealand and hosts Zimbabwe, with four uncapped players in the squad, Cricket South Africa said on Thursday.
Regular captain Aiden Markram and several key players have been rested for the series to help manage their workload, coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement shared by the CSA.
Conrad said it would be the start of South Africa's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in February-March.
World Test Championship winners South Africa will also try out new players in the two-match red-ball series against Zimbabwe, starting Saturday, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder said.
Keshav Maharaj, who will lead the test team against Zimbabwe with Temba Bavuma absent due to injury, will also miss the T20 series along with Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs.
Uncapped batter and wicketkeeper Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is in the squad for the Zimbabwe test series, has also been called up for the tri-series, while Corbin Bosch, Rubin Hermann and Senuran Muthusamy have got their first international call-ups.
"With several senior players rested as part of their workload management, it creates space for these players to step in and show what they can offer, and bring them into contention for World Cup selection," Conrad added.
The T20 tournament, hosted at the Harare Sports Club, will kick off with a match between Zimbabwe and South Africa on July 14, with the final set for July 26.

Ronaldo prefers rest to playing in Club World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo preferred to take a rest rather than play in the revamped Club World Cup, the Portuguese international said on Saturday after renewing his contract with Al-Nassr. The Saudi Pro League club announced on Thursday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract which would keep him at the club past his 42nd birthday. Speculation over the 40-year-old's plans intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. "I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year," Ronaldo said in a video posted by Al-Nassr on X. "I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything," he added. "And of course, to be in this club, which I love". Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain earlier this month which ended 2-2 before his side went on to beat the European champions on penalties. The Portugal captain said his aim in staying at Al-Nassr was to win a major trophy with the Riyadh-based side. "My goal, it's always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course I still believe in that" Ronaldo added. "This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia". Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions. Ronaldo is also eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone in his career. He has scored 794 goals in club football and 138 for Portugal to take his tally to 932. Hamilton hails 'world class' Ferrari performance
SPIELBERG, Austria - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth. The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third. "It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend," seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television. "My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session. "Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class." Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede. Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium. The team, runners-up last year, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes.
