Expert: Gold Demand Rises 3% in Q2 2025 as Safe-Haven Investment Grows Amid Global Challenges

Waleed Farouk
John Luca, the economist, stated that the gold market witnessed significant dynamic changes during the second quarter of the year, with total demand for the yellow metal increasing by 3% year-on-year, reaching 1,249 tons. Meanwhile, the value of this demand surged by 45%, totaling $132 billion, driven by rising gold prices and increasing demand for it as a safe-haven asset amid global economic challenges.
Luca pointed out that gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) played a pivotal role in boosting demand for the second consecutive quarter, benefiting from global trade policy uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, as well as the continuous rise in prices that attracted investments into these funds.
He explained that investors in gold bars and coins have strongly joined this trend, making this investment category achieve its best half-year performance since 2013.
Luca added that central banks continued to play their role as a major driver of global demand for gold, adding 166 tons to their official reserves. While the pace of their purchases has slowed somewhat, this trend remains a positive indicator of sustained demand from these institutions.
In the same context, Luca noted that the gold jewelry market showed a clear contradiction, as demand volumes dropped to levels similar to those seen during the 2020 pandemic period, while global spending on jewelry increased, driven by higher prices.
Regarding the technology sector, Luca mentioned that the use of gold in this field has been under pressure due to potential threats from U.S. tariffs, but he highlighted that the growing demand for applications related to artificial intelligence is a strong point supporting continued demand in this sector.
Luca concluded his statement by emphasizing that gold remains one of the most attractive assets amid current economic and geopolitical volatility.

1,000 Illegal Miners Arrested in Gold Mine Crackdown in South Africa

Israa Farhan South African authorities have detained nearly 1,000 undocumented foreign nationals for illegal mining activities at the historic Sheba Gold Mine in Mpumalanga province, police confirmed on Friday. The arrests were made as part of a large-scale security operation known as Operation Vala Umgodi, targeting illicit mining near the town of Barberton, close to the borders with Eswatini and Mozambique. According to police, those apprehended had been working underground without legal documentation and now face charges related to immigration violations and illegal mining. Authorities also indicated that some of the detainees may be underage. The week-long operation marks one of the most extensive crackdowns on illegal mining in recent years, with law enforcement warning that further arrests are likely. Barberton Mines, the owner of Sheba Gold Mine, has welcomed the action, stating that illegal mining severely undermines safety and economic stability. Sheba, one of South Africa's oldest and most lucrative gold mines, dates back to the 1880s and played a pivotal role in the country's gold rush. Despite remaining operational, the site has been plagued by theft and soaring operational costs, prompting efforts to restructure and secure its assets. Illegal miners, often referred to locally as zama-zamas, operate in both abandoned and active mines using rudimentary methods. Many are migrants from neighboring countries, while others are South African nationals who turned to illegal mining amid economic hardship. South Africa is home to about 6,000 abandoned mines, many of which have become hubs for unlawful mining operations. The latest crackdown reflects increasing government efforts to restore control over the country's troubled mining sector. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Australian State to Legalise Work From Home

Israa Farhan The Australian state of Victoria is preparing to introduce legislation that would make working from home a legal entitlement rather than a negotiable option, according to an announcement by Premier Jacinta Allan. Under the proposed law, employees would have the right to work from home at least two days per week, provided their job responsibilities allow for remote work. Speaking at the state Labor Party conference, Allan said the move is supported by clear evidence that remote workers are more productive and that it saves time and money for families. She emphasised that any worker who can reasonably perform their duties from home should have the right to do so for at least two days a week. The policy will now undergo consultation with workers, employers, and unions to refine the implementation details. Allan noted that the change could save the average worker around $110 AUD per week, help reduce road congestion, and encourage more women to remain in the workforce. Brad Battin, Victoria's opposition leader, expressed support for measures that enhance work-life balance. The bill is expected to be introduced to the state parliament next year. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Malaysia Targets AI, Green Tech Leadership in Southeast Asia by 2030

Ahmed Emam Malaysia has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to position itself as the leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and green technology in Southeast Asia by 2030, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced, TV BRICS reported. Presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030) in Parliament, Anwar described the country's strategy as a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to capitalise on emerging digital and renewable energy sectors. He emphasised Malaysia's determination to become a globally influential player in AI, digital innovation, and sustainable industries. The government's plan centres on adopting and scaling up homegrown technological innovations to drive economic growth. Key priorities include developing strategic digital assets such as AI, data analytics, and government digital systems, alongside boosting research, development, commercialisation, and innovation under the 'Made by Malaysia' initiative. By 2030, Malaysia aims to extend 5G coverage to 98% of populated and industrial areas, including rural regions. The plan also envisions producing at least 5,000 new digital entrepreneurs and integrating AI applications across multiple economic sectors. To support these targets, the government will introduce AI education from an early age, strengthen intellectual property frameworks, provide strategic funding, and foster cross-sector collaboration between industry, academia, and government bodies. read more UAE's Lunar Mission Delayed to Tomorrow Twitter Lifts Trump's Account Ban Scientists Find Evidence Of 10،000 Black Holes Surrounding The Center Of The Milky Way Galaxy Greenhouse In Antarctica Able To Grow Vegetables Without Soil Or Sunlight Moving Over China: U.S. Is Again Home to World's Speediest Supercomputer Technology The 10 most expensive cars in the world Technology Top 10 fastest cars in the world Technology Lasers Could Make Computers 1 Million Times Faster Technology Smart technology taking control of our lives News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
