My favorite Denzel Washington movie just landed on Paramount Plus — you need to stream this crime thriller now
"Training Day" might be the best movie from the new shows and movies on Paramount Plus this month. Hopefully, you've seen this crime thriller or are at least familiar with it. It's centered around an incredible Denzel Washington performance that ultimately earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor and is my pick for Denzel's best performance of his career. His performance isn't the only great one in this movie either. Ethan Hawke is nearly as good and also earned an Oscar nomination for his performance. But if you remember any performance from this movie, it's probably Denzel's. That said, you might not remember this movie, or there's a chance you've never even seen it. "Training Day" only brought in around $105 million at the box office back in 2001, and it's now nearly 24 years old, meaning at least an entire generation of people might not even know this movie exists. But I'm here to fix that, because this crime thriller is a must-watch. Here's what "Training Day" is about and why you need to check out Denzel's greatest performance now that it's available to stream on Paramount Plus. "Training Day" stars Ethan Hawke as LAPD officer Jake Hoyt, who is trying to join the narcotics squad of Detective Alonzo Harris (Washington). To get the gig, he will need to ride along with Alonzo as his partner for a one-day trial evaluation. That ride-along comes with some serious risks. Alonzo's squad covers some of the most violent, gang-ridden neighborhoods of Los Angeles. As the pair goes around looking for crime, they come across everything from college kids buying marijuana to drug dealers carrying loaded guns. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. However, as the day goes on, Jake realizes that the most dangerous part of this gig might not be the crime in LA. It might just be his new partner. For the record, as much as I love this movie, it's not flawless. The plot pretty quickly devolves into something that requires suspension of disbelief. But Denzel's performance as Alonzo will make it incredibly easy to overlook these flaws, and you don't have to wait particularly long for him to start cooking. And once he gets going, he doesn't really stop. Again, Ethan Hawke is genuinely great in "Training Day," and maybe without him alongside Denzel, their performances become undone by the screenplay. But I'm convinced this would have been an incredible performance regardless of who Denzel was acting alongside. There's one scene in the movie — and if you've seen this crime thriller before, you'll know which one I'm talking about — where Jake catches some guys assaulting a girl in an alley. From the moment Alonzo comes up on them, it's probably around a four-minute scene and most of it is Denzel just ripping off incredible line after incredible line. Hawke may have two lines in the entire thing. But it doesn't matter that it's just Denzel doing his thing, because he's mesmerizing doing it. It's why you need to watch "Training Day" right now, and witness one of the greatest actors ever give the greatest performance of his career. Stream "Training Day" now on Paramount Plus Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

Idris Elba reveals shocking revelation about ‘The Wire'
Stringer Bell isn't a fan. Idris Elba rose to fame on the acclaimed HBO crime drama 'The Wire,' but he recently made a shocking admission: he's never seen the show, and refuses to watch it. 'If I'm really honest, I didn't watch 'The Wire,'' Elba, 52, shared on a recent episode of Amy Poehler's 'Good Hang' podcast. 'I didn't watch it. And I feel bad. It's not that I'm not a fan of it — I was there. I made a show that was, you know, so intense and so real, so important, even though we didn't realize it,' the 'Luther' star added. 'I didn't realize the importance of the show while making it.' 8 Idris Elba on Amy Poehler's podcast in July 2025. Elba added, 'I didn't participate in its celebration as a viewer, as a fan. And so I feel a little bit outside of the club.' 'The Wire' aired on HBO from 2002 to 2008, following various institutions in Baltimore, Maryland, and their intersections with law enforcement. It starred Elba, Dominic West, the late Lance Reddick, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Wendell Pierce, and a pre-fame Michael B. Jordan. 8 Idris Elba on 'The Wire' in 2005. The role was his big break in Hollywood – the Golden Globe-winning actor had previously been in British shows like 'London's Burning' and did small roles such as a 1 episode guest stint on 'Law and Order.' But 'The Wire' put him in the spotlight. Since then, Elba has become a global superstar, and his name has frequently been put forward as a public favorite candidate to be the next James Bond. 8 Idris Elba in 'Luther.' ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection 8 Idris Elba with John Cena in 'Head of State.' Chiabella James/Prime Poehler told Elba that 'The Wire' was 'a series that changed my life' and told him that she's watched the show at least three times. When she encouraged him to watch it, he said, 'No, man.' 'You can't watch it now?' the former 'Saturday Night Live' star asked. 'But I bet, Idris, I bet you have a feeling about it that you might be kinder to yourself and [the show], watching it now.' 8 Idris Elba at Amazon's 'Heads Of State' World Premiere on Jun 24, 2025. Jackie Brown / 8 Idris Elba on 'The Wire.' Paul Schiraldi/HBO Elba explained, 'It's more that I feel the presence of it all, my life since 'The Wire,' in terms of its impact. So to me, it was almost a bit like I was Stringer Bell. I'm not Stringer Bell, but I also feel like when Stringer Bell died, there was a part of me that died with that character. It's weird for me to go back and watch it.' He added that he hates becoming 'overly conscious' of his performance. 'I like being in it rather than watching it.'

Clint Eastwood's ‘addictive' affairs during first marriage exposed in new biography: ‘I was going to do as I pleased'
Clint Eastwood openly committed adultery during his marriage to Maggie Johnson, a new biography claims. In 'Clint: The Man and The Movies,' biographer Shawn Levy wrote about the 95-year-old actor's alleged affairs that he had while he was wed to Johnson from 1953 to 1984. 'By many accounts, including his own, he more or less comported himself as if he were a bachelor,' Levy wrote of Eastwood, according to People. 10 Clint Eastwood attends the 20th Annual AFI Awards in January 2020. 'One thing Mag had to learn about me was that I was going to do as I pleased,' Eastwood told Photoplay in 1963, per Levy. 'She had to accept that, because if she didn't, we wouldn't be married.' The 'Rahwide' star was also reportedly quoted by Levy as saying, 'I'm independent, a vagabond, and [Johnson] accepts me as I am and doesn't strangle me with female possessiveness.' 10 Maggie Johnson and Clint Eastwood in 1956. 'Clint: The Man and The Movies' further alleged that the Oscar winner picked up women in his acting classes, on studio lots where he worked and at the apartment complex he shared with Johnson. 10 'Clint: The Man and the Movies.' Harper Collins The Post has reached out to Eastwood's rep for comment. During Eastwood and Johnson's marriage, they welcomed two children: son Kyle, 57, and daughter Alison, 53. Most recently, Eastwood was in a ten-year relationship with Christina Sandera until she died of a heart attack at age 61 in July 2024. 'Christina was a lovely, caring woman, and I will miss her very much,' Eastwood said in a statement after Sandera's death. The pair, who met at a restaurant in California, mostly kept their relationship out of the spotlight. They walked their last red carpet together in 2019.
