The truth behind Caitlin Clark's real Olympic snub... one year after WNBA star was left out of Team USA
Caitlin Clark turned down the chance to play for USA's 3x3 team at the Paris Olympics before being left off the full women's roster, it has been revealed.
The WNBA sensation was controversially snubbed by Team USA boss Cheryl Reeve at last year's Olympic Games, despite her record-breaking college success with Iowa and strong start up in the big leagues with the Indiana Fever at the time.
Reeve's decision sparked outrage amongst fans who were adamant that Clark deserved to go to the French capital, where both the men's and women's teams claimed gold medals.
Yet according to reporter and author Christine Brennan, the Fever star did have the chance to go to the Olympics with the three-on-three team.
In her new book - titled 'On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women's Sports' - Brennan claims Clark rejected an offer to play for the 3x3 team 'well before June'.
USA officials made the offer knowing there was still a qualifying event she could play in to become eligible for the Olympics, having never played on a national 3x3 team, she explains.
Instead of playing 3x3 basketball, Clark used the WNBA's mid-season break during the Olympics to recharge her batteries ahead of the second half of her rookie year.
After being snubbed for a place on the main roster, she said in June 2024: 'I'm excited for the girls that are on the team. I know it's the most competitive team in the world and I know it could've gone either way, me being on the team or me not being on the team.
'I'm excited for them, gonna be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics, it'll be fun to watch them.
'Honestly, no disappointment. I think it just gives you something to work for. It's a dream, hopefully one day I can be there. I think it's just a little bit more motivation. You remember that and hopefully when four years comes back around, I can be there.'
Clark also revealed that she was already aware she hadn't been picked before the news broke.
'They called me and let me know before everything came out, which was really respectful of them and I appreciated that,' she continued.
'They did the same for every girl that made the team or every girl that didn't make the team. There's a lot of players in the Olympic pool, so it wasn't like I was the only one they had to call. They had to make quite a few calls.'
Brennan, who is not without controversy, has an upcoming book on Clark and her impact
A year on from her surprise decision, Reeve is facing calls to resign over her 'stunningly bad' conflict of interest involving Clark.
In a remarkable set of resurfaced tweets, highlighted by Brennan, the Team USA coach appeared to take aim at Caitlin, who has become the face of the WNBA in recent years.
In May 2024, Reeve appeared to take issue with the amount of TV time given to the Indiana rookie when she wrote 'The W is more than one player'.
'How on earth is that ok with the US Olympic and Paralympic community and the USA basketball team that its coach is actively tweeting and going on social media about someone who is in the selection pool?' Brennan said on The Adam Gold Show.

David Beckham is pictured for first time in plaster cast after being hospitalised with 'unbearable' pain... as England legend waves to fans ahead of Inter Miami's Club World Cup clash against PSG
has been pictured for the first time wearing a plaster cast after undergoing surgery, as he waved to fans ahead of Inter Miami's Club World Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday. The 50-year-old was hospitalised last week after being left in 'unbearable' pain and requiring surgery to remove a screw embedded in his wrist from an old injury suffered while playing for England 22 years ago. Beckham, who co-owns Inter Miami, was seen arriving at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium wearing a blue sling with his right hand encased in a plaster cast, but appeared in good spirits as he smiled and greeted supporters before the match. It comes just days after wife Victoria, 51, shared a photo of Beckham in hospital recovering from the operation, writing on Instagram: 'Get well soon daddy' as he smiled despite the discomfort. MailOnline revealed that the former England captain had experienced worsening pain in recent months, with the embedded screw causing severe discomfort before he was forced to undergo surgery last week. Despite his recent hospitalisation, Beckham made the trip to Atlanta to support his team in one of their biggest games since the club's formation, standing pitchside ahead of kick-off and chatting with staff. His appearance comes amid a period of family tensions, with ongoing reports of a rift with eldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz, who did not attend Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations last month. Beckham, however, ensured his mother Sandra was celebrated on her 76th birthday last week, posting a warm tribute on Instagram and including Brooklyn in the message despite the ongoing family issues.

Chelsea response to storm setback ‘shows how far we've come'
Captain Reece James felt Chelsea showed great character to overcome an extraordinary storm delay to see off Benfica and reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals. Chelsea were forced back into their dressing room for almost two hours after a thunderstorm interrupted their last-16 tie against the Portuguese giants in Charlotte with just four minutes remaining. The Blues had been leading 1-0 at the time courtesy of a superb James free-kick, but Benfica hit back to equalise with a controversial Angel Di Maria penalty after play finally resumed. That took the clash to extra time, but the sending-off of Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni proved critical and Chelsea ran out 4-1 winners with goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Chelsea can now look forward to a last-eight encounter with Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Friday, but it was the storm delay that was the main talking point at the Bank of America Stadium. It was the latest of a series of games in the tournament to have been paused because of extreme weather – a situation described as a 'joke' by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who also questioned whether the United States was a suitable host. James told the club's website: 'It was a very difficult game with a lot of interruptions. The climate wasn't the best, the pitch wasn't the best. It was very slow and hard to play. 'You get to 85 minutes and then the game has to be stopped for a long period of time. It takes a lot out of the players. They cool down and then they need to restart that engine again. 'It's tough, but we're happy we got the job done. To be so close to the end and then have a kick in the teeth, but pick yourself up and dust yourself down and go on again to score three goals – I think it probably shows how far we've come.' Until the weather changed the atmosphere, James' 64th-minute strike had looked like being the winner. Benfica had been expecting the defender to cross from wide on the left, but James instead whipped a curling right-footed shot over the wall and in at the near post. He said: 'When I was walking over I spoke to the centre-halves and said, 'What do you want?' 'They just said a shot-cross inswinger. I said, 'No problem'. Then I got to the ball and I saw the keeper's position. He showed me too much of the goal so I just decided to shoot.' With a six-day gap before their next fixture, Maresca has said he will now give the players a couple of days off before beginning preparations to face Palmeiras.
