Johnny Somali's alleged victim files petition for severe punishment

Express Tribune30-06-2025
Johnny Somali, also known as Ramsey Khalid Ismael, is facing mounting legal troubles as his trial in South Korea intensifies.
On June 30, a new development emerged when a reported victim filed a court petition demanding that the court impose the maximum sentence allowed under law.
Somali is currently on trial for multiple offenses linked to his controversial live-streaming activities in South Korea. He has pleaded guilty to two counts of Obstruction of Business and two violations of the Minor Crimes Act. However, he continues to deny allegations related to the creation of Deepfake videos, with additional charges reportedly still under review.
According to YouTuber Legal Mindset, who has been closely following the case, the individual who submitted the petition is not BongBong, the streamer Somali is accused of targeting with Deepfakes. Instead, the petition is believed to have come from either a person affected by a public bus disruption allegedly caused by Somali, or a parent present at Lotte World theme park. During the incident at the park, Somali is accused of using a text-to-speech feature to broadcast inappropriate and explicit remarks involving children.
This petition could influence sentencing if Somali is found guilty on all charges, especially as public pressure builds over his behavior during his stay in South Korea. Legal experts suggest that victim impact petitions may sway judges toward harsher penalties, especially in high-profile or morally charged cases.
The case continues to draw significant attention online and in South Korean media as the trial proceeds. Somali's next court date is expected to shed more light on the remaining charges and the court's stance on potential sentencing enhancements.

Elon Musk faces legal threat after Grok AI posts graphic comments about sexual assault

Elon Musk is facing potential legal action after his AI chatbot Grok generated highly explicit and disturbing posts directed at X user Will Stancil. Stancil, a Democratic policy maker, stated he is considering a lawsuit after the chatbot described sexually assaulting him and offered instructions to users with similar intentions. One prompt response from Grok read: "Bring lockpicks, gloves, flashlight, and lube." Another added: "Always wrap it" in reference to avoiding HIV during sexual assault. Stancil, shocked by the output, reposted the interactions later adding, 'Seriously. Let's sue them. I want to do discovery on why Grok is suddenly doing this.' okay lawyer time I guess — Will Stancil (@whstancil) July 9, 2025 He claimed Grok began mentioning him unprompted in unrelated queries, shortly after he publicly criticised the AI for antisemitic remarks. Screenshots shared by Stancil include additional threats and vulgarities, including a post referencing "Somali justice ... until he's begging for wokeness." The backlash adds to ongoing criticism of Grok after the AI reportedly shared racist, antisemitic and pro-Nazi content, including comments praising Hitler and supporting the Holocaust. Responding on X, Musk stated: 'Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed.' He has since continued promoting the updated Grok model.

South Korean court orders arrest of ex-president Yoon: Yonhap

SEOUL: A South Korean court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for former president Yoon Suk Yeol and placed him in custody over his failed martial law bid last year, the Yonhap news agency reported. Nam Se-jin, a senior judge at Seoul's Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant for Yoon over concerns that he could destroy evidence in the case, according to Yonhap. Yoon was formally stripped of office in April after being impeached and suspended by lawmakers over his December 3 attempt to subvert civilian rule, which saw armed soldiers deployed to parliament. South Korean President Yoon arrested over failed martial law bid The ex-president and his lawyers attended the hearing and rejected all charges before he was taken to Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, just south of the capital, to await the court's decision, Yonhap said Thursday. According to the news agency, this is the second time Yoon has been arrested. The first time was in January when he was still in office, but a court later accepted his request to cancel his arrest, paving the way for him to be released in March. Previously, the courts dismissed an arrest warrant for Yoon requested by prosecutors after he initially refused to appear for questioning, citing that he had since expressed a willingness to comply with future summons.

Johnny Somali faces years in jail as victim demands maximum sentence

YouTuber Johnny Somali, real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael, could face a significantly longer prison sentence after an alleged victim filed a court petition requesting the maximum punishment. Somali is currently on trial in South Korea, where he faces multiple charges including Obstruction of Business and violations of the Minor Crimes Act, stemming from controversial livestreams filmed across the country. The streamer has pleaded guilty to two Obstruction of Business charges and two Minor Crimes Act violations but maintains his innocence on several Deepfake-related charges. New information suggests additional charges may also be on the horizon. On June 30, YouTuber Legal Mindset, who has been closely following the case, revealed that a court petition has been submitted by an individual reportedly impacted by Somali's actions. The petitioner is believed to be either a passenger delayed on a bus due to Somali's behavior or a parent who was present at Lotte World when Somali allegedly used text-to-speech to make disturbing comments involving children. The legal petition requires the victim to prove actual harm, a lack of remorse by Somali, and that no reconciliation occurred. If found valid and Somali is convicted, the petition could push his sentence from a minimum of 6 months to over 4 years. In addition, a separate case concerning alleged child sexual harassment is progressing rapidly. If convicted, Somali could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 50 million Won (approx. $36,200 USD). Somali's next court date is set for August 13, 2025, with a full day of testimony expected. The trial continues to draw widespread attention due to the serious nature of the charges and the influencer's high profile.
