
Researchers train AI model to respond to online political posts, find quality of discourse improved
Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), a large language model (LLM) is trained on vast amounts of text data and therefore, can respond to human requests in the natural language.

by the AI system -- trained prior to performing experiments -- were found to nearly double the chances of a high quality online conversation and "substantially increase (one's) openness to alternative viewpoints", according to findings published in the journal Science Advances.
Being open to perspectives did not, however, translate into a change in one's political ideology, the researchers found.
Large language models could provide "light-touch suggestions", such as alerting a social media user to the disrespectful tone of their post, author Gregory Eady, an associate professor of political science and data science at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, told PTI.
"To promote this concretely, it is easy to imagine large language models operating in the background to alert us to when we slip into bad practices in online discussions, or to use these AI systems as part of school curricula to teach young people best practices when discussing contentious topics," Eady said.
Hansika Kapoor, research author at the department of psychology, Monk Prayogshala in Mumbai, an independent not-for-profit academic research institute, told PTI, "(The study) provides a proof-of-concept for using LLMs in this manner, with well-specified prompts, that can generate mutually exclusive stimuli in an experiment that compares two or more groups."
Nearly 3,000 participants -- who identified as Republicans or Democrats in the US and Conservative or Labour supporters in the UK -- were asked to write a text describing and justifying their stance on a political issue important to them, as they would for a social media post.
This was countered by ChatGPT -- a "fictitious social media user" for the participants -- which tailored its argument "on the fly" according to the text's position and reasoning. The participants then responded as if replying to a social media comment.
"An evidence-based counterargument (relative to an emotion-based response) increases the probability of eliciting a high-quality response by six percentage points, indicating willingness to compromise by five percentage points, and being respectful by nine percentage points," the authors wrote in the study.
Eady said, "Essentially, what you give in a political discussion is what you get: that if you show your willingness to compromise, others will do the same; that when you engage in reason-based arguments, others will do the same; etc."
AI-powered models have been critiqued and scrutinised for varied reasons, including an inherent bias -- political, and even racial at times -- and for being a 'black box', whereby internal processes used to arrive at a result cannot be traced.
Kapoor, who is not involved with the study, said that whilst appearing promising, a complete reliance on AI systems for regulating online discourse may not be advisable yet.
The study itself involved humans to rate responses as well, she said.
Additionally, context, culture, and timing would need to be considered for such regulation, she added.
Eady too is apprehensive about "using LLMs to regulate online political discussions in more heavy-handed ways."
Further, the study authors acknowledged that because the US and UK are effectively two-party systems, addressing the 'partisan' nature of texts and responses was straightforward.
Eady added, "The ability for LLMs to moderate discussion might also vary substantially across cultures and languages, such as in India."
"Personally, therefore, I am in favour of providing tools and information that enable people to engage in better conversations, but nevertheless, for all its (LLMs') flaws, allowing nearly as open a political forum as possible," the author added.
Kapoor said, "In the Indian context, this strategy may require some trial-and-error, particularly because of the numerous political affiliations in the nation. Therefore, there may be multiple variables and different issues (including food politics) that will need to be contextualised for study here."
Another study, recently published in the 'Humanities and Social Sciences Communications' journal, found that dark personality traits -- such as psychopathy and narcissism -- a fear of missing out (FoMO) and cognitive ability can shape online political engagement.
Findings of researchers from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University suggest that "those with both high psychopathy (manipulative, self-serving behaviour) and low cognitive ability are the most actively involved in online political engagement." Data from the US and seven Asian countries, including China, Indonesia and Malaysia, were analysed.
Describing the study "interesting", Kapoor pointed out that a lot more work needs to be done in India for understanding factors that drive online political participation, ranging from personality to attitudes, beliefs and aspects such as voting behaviour.
Her team, which has developed a scale to measure one's political ideology in India (published in a pre-print paper), found that dark personality traits were associated with a disregard for norms and hierarchies.

OpenAI on Tuesday announced the launch of a 'study mode' in its large-language model-based chatbot, ChatGPT, to help students work through problems instead of simply getting the answer to a question. The new 'study mode' will be available to all logged-in users of ChatGPT's Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. It will also be available with ChatGPT Edu over the next few weeks, the company said in a blog post. Since its introduction, ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools for students worldwide, used for tackling challenging homework, preparing for exams, and exploring new concepts and ideas, according to OpenAI. 'But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them,' the company said. In 'study mode', ChatGPT will prompt students to interact with questions tailored to their objective and skill level, helping them build a deeper understanding of the subject. The new mode has been built on system instructions developed by OpenAI in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. The key features of the new mode include prompting students, providing responses in easy-to-follow sections, personalised learning support, quizzes, and open-ended questions to check learning on a continuous basis, as OpenAI stated in the post. 'As we run longer-term studies on how students learn best with AI, we intend to publish a deeper analysis of what we have learned about the links between model design and cognition, shape future product experiences based on these insights, and work side by side with the broader education ecosystem to ensure AI benefits learners worldwide,' OpenAI said. The leading global company in AI has introduced a range of new features in its products over the past few years. Earlier this year, in April, OpenAI introduced updates that allowed users to search, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT by providing personalised recommendations for products, visual details of the product they are looking for, the price, as well as a direct link to purchase it. In February 2024, OpenAI said it was 'testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful'. The idea, OpenAI had then said, was to save users from 'having to repeat information' so that future conversations with the chatbot became more useful. The memory feature was rolled out to all users in September that year. In an update on April 10 this year, OpenAI said that the memory in ChatGPT was now comprehensive as the LLM could, in addition to memories saved by users, also reference past conversations between the chatbot and the user to deliver more personalised responses. In December 2024, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT's integration with WhatsApp, where users could send a message to ChatGPT to get up-to-date answers.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT ‘study mode' in India: How to use the free multilingual, interactive learning tool?
OpenAI, on Tuesday, July 29, introduced 'study mode' in ChatGPT. The latest ChatGPT update introduces a step-by-step learning method instead of quick answers. 'Study Mode is designed to shift the ChatGPT experience from just giving answers to guiding users through the process of finding an answer step-by-step,' said Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI. Study mode is available in 11 Indian languages with multimodal support, bringing voice, image, and text together to make AI learning accessible for diverse learners. Starting today, it is available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team, with availability in ChatGPT Edu rolling out in the next few weeks. Belsky said that the feature has been extensively beta-tested by Indian students across a wide range of academic scenarios, be it everyday learning or exam preparation. According to Belsky, early testing showed strong performance, particularly on IIT-level questions. 'Study mode is free and available to millions of learners across India. Its mobile-friendly design ensures students from any part of the country, whether urban or rural, can engage with it easily, making high-quality learning support widely available,' she noted. Study mode is useful for helping with homework, test preparation, and learning new topics. To use it, one needs to select 'Study and learn' from the tools in ChatGPT and ask a question. 'Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning. Features like these are a positive step toward effective AI use for learning. Even in the AI era, the best learning still happens when students are excited about and actively engaging with the lesson material,' said Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at Common Sense Media. OpenAI has claimed that study mode is powered by its custom system instructions that have been written in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to reflect the core set of behaviours that support deeper learning. Study Mode is a step in that direction,' said Belsky. Study mode comes with interactive prompts that combine Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts to promote active learning. Study mode offers lessons tailored to the right level for the user, which it does based on questions that assess the skill level and memory from previous chats, along with improved memory from uploaded files. It also offers knowledge checks in the form of quizzes and open-ended questions, which are accompanied by personalised feedback to track progress. Besides, it is flexible, meaning students can easily toggle study mode on and off during a conversation. When asked if study mode can be misused and what guardrails have been deployed to prevent misuse during exams or assignments, Belsky asserted that OpenAI has implemented robust safety measures, including those that prevent these models from producing harmful content. The tech executive said that the feature, like all other OpenAI models, underwent evaluations for safety before release. 'We see Study Mode as democratising access to high-quality tutoring and learning support across India. This is our first phase of improving learning in ChatGPT. Over time, we hope to build out more multimodal features, like image-generated responses and videos, to better personalize it for learners. In this beginning stage, the hope is to get as much feedback as we can from Indian parents, students, and academic leaders so we can continue advancing this product,' Belsky told The new study mode is a step towards improving AI-driven learning. At present, it is powered by system instructions and allows for rapid iteration based on student feedback, despite some limitations. The company has said that with future updates, it aims to include clearer visualisations, goal tracking, personalised support based on skill level, etc. OpenAI also plans to integrate effective strategies into its core models over time. Through its NextGenAI initiative and collaboration with Stanford's SCALE Initiative, it is also conducting long-term research on how AI impacts learning, particularly in K–12 education. ChatGPT launches AI study assistant. Can it challenge test-prep cos' dominance?
New Delhi: India's edtech firms as well as traditional coaching centres may have some serious competition coming from the unstoppable rise of artificial intelligence, as Big Tech pushes to showcase AI as a formidable study assistant for students preparing for coveted jobs and top engineering colleges. OpenAI, the world's most prominent artificial intelligence startup, on Tuesday launched a 'study mode' on its ubiquitous generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT. With a focus on competitive examinations including India's most popular ones such as engineering and medical entrance tests, the company agreed that ChatGPT's study mode will likely overlap with India's education-tech startups—thereby giving it access to a large, potentially monetizable base of students in the country. Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI, said the company has used 'some" questionnaires and study materials of competitive examinations such as the engineering entrance tests for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as part of preparing the student-centric study mode. 'We also tested study mode on top core-curriculum examinations such as for India's IITs, as well as other examinations across India, to assess its performance," Belsky said. While OpenAI did not offer any specific benchmark or ranking figures for the study mode in reference to India's education ecosystem—except that the mode 'performs very, very well", Belsky added that the goal for the student-specific mode was to 'create a general-purpose study assistant that works irrespective of universities and courses." 'We also collaborated with leading researchers and institutes across India while creating study mode, and we'll be sharing the results of these evaluations soon," she said. Kashyap Kompella, veteran AI analyst, trainer and founder of consultancy firm RPA2AI Research, said the study mode will have to handle India's language divide, but 'the one key problem it can solve is India's lack of trained teachers at scale even at the last mile". 'Edtech startups digitized education about a decade ago, but per-student personalization remained out of their ambit. Modes like this on ChatGPT can accurately personalize education for students at scale, but concerns will remain on the possibility of misuse of these tools. The key trick will be too train and enable teachers to make the most of such AI tools—a 'teach mode', perhaps," he added. Ed-tech firms specializing in test preparation for competitive examinations are likely to see increased competition as more AI companies launch similar assistants. 37-year-old test-prep firm Allen Career Institute, for instance, offers a similar preparation assistant 'Allie' through a proprietary software platform. Still, it won't be a cakewalk for AI tools to replace human interface, which is immensely valued in a country like India, some experts said. 'It's unlikely that such AI tools will take away substantial business from India's education specialists, since their prowess lies in offering human oversight toward a student's career preparation. Parents, especially from India's middle-class, are unlikely to have students readily bank on ChatGPT to prepare for IITs. It can be an also-there option, but is unlikely to take over the market," a senior industry executive close to a top test-prep firm told Mint, requesting anonymity since they had not used ChatGPT's study mode as yet. Study mode can be accessed even on ChatGPT's free tier, but will come with usage restrictions such as long response times in peak usage hours, and limited memory of conversations. But, for now, the company does not plan to introduce a student-specific pricing model. ChatGPT's base subscription tier, 'Plus', costs ₹1,999 ($23) per month in India. To be sure, OpenAI also has an education-specific 'ChatGPT Edu' for universities to adopt—which would give its students access to the platform for free, but at a group pricing for the institution itself. Study mode is separate from this. OpenAI's announcement comes as Big Tech firms in Silicon Valley are on a lookout for ways to get consumers accustomed to AI. In May this year, Google launched a video-centric foundational AI model, Veo 3, designed to let any user create videos with text prompts. Plans for the service are priced onward of ₹1,950 ($22) per month in India. Microsoft, meanwhile, is integrating its OpenAI-backed Copilot into all new Windows-powered laptops—also priced at ₹2,000 per month for a single person. Jibu Elias, responsible computing lead for India at Mozilla Foundation, added that it is 'to the best interests of Big Tech and the makers of AI to have more students and people in general becoming used to their AI ecosystems right from an early stage." This, Elias added, could be a key factor for companies seeking ways to rope in users into their AI ecosystems at an early stage—much like the consumer technology battle among companies through the first 15 years of 2000s.
