Critical Role's chief creative officer and longtime game master, Matthew Mercer, is making a big change at the team's nerdworld business.
When the team's fourth campaign kicks off on October 2, it won't be Mercer sitting behind the game master's screen. Instead, helming the campaign — a long-term staple of Critical Role's streaming business — will be Brennan Lee Mulligan of " Dimension 20" fame.
The two men have forged a formidable alliance, guest-starring on each other's shows while cornering a sizable chunk of the tabletop touring business. The eight-member CR crew has filled arenas from Wembley in London to megashow venues in Australia, while "Dimension 20" sold out Madison Square Garden for their January gig.
"We've been enormous fans of Brennan's for many years now, and when it came to giving both Matthew Mercer and the world of Exandria a bit of a breather, Brennan felt like the perfect storyteller to take our community somewhere entirely new," Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham said in a press release.
The show's fourth campaign will air on CR's streaming platform, Beacon, and its YouTube and Twitch channels. The campaign will also be set in a new world, not Mercer's world of Exandria, in which the first three campaigns occurred.
"What a gift, a privilege, and an honor to be invited behind the screen of Critical Role for this next epic adventure," Mulligan said in the press release. "Every collaboration we have had together has brought nothing but sheer joy, and Campaign 4 will be no exception."
CR has not announced if its fourth campaign will still use "Dungeons & Dragons," the Wizards of the Coast-owned system that the crew first started playing on stream. The CR team is now promoting "Daggerheart," its answer to the "D&D" juggernaut. Its main cast has rolled out content on-stream to promote the now sold-out game.
"We're not just turning a page — we're starting a whole new book," Marisha Ray, CR cofounder and the team's creative director, said in the press release.
Ray also teased new content in a June interview with Business Insider backstage at the crew's Melbourne show. There'll be more "fun, out-of-the-box" content airing on Beacon for CR subscribers, she said.
"We have a lot of ideas for shows and stuff that we want to do. It's really just making sure that not just the cast, but also the production team, isn't overextending itself too much," Ray told BI.
"And we really want to do more shorter-run series as well with 'Daggerheart,'" she added. "I think it lends itself very well to short-run series as well as genre-bending, and doing more things that we can experiment with."
CR has not said if all the cofounders will participate in the crew's fourth campaign, which may mark a significant departure from 10 years of streaming together.
Still, the CR cofounders are being kept busy with their two Amazon-backed animated series. "The Mighty Nein" drops on November 19 on Prime Video.
Meanwhile, "The Legend of Vox Machina," which raised more than $11 million in its initial Kickstarter funding run, has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The fourth season of "Vox Machina" is slated for 2026.

Brennan Lee Mulligan Will Lead the Fourth ‘Critical Role' Campaign

Every new campaign for Critical Role provides a shakeup in some way, whether it's a new location or cast of characters. With the upcoming fourth campaign, the Actual Play series sees its biggest change yet with Brennan Lee Mulligan in the Game Master's seat. Mulligan, who runs games for his own Actual Play series Dimension 20 over on Dropout and the Critical Role miniseries Calamity, will take helm of a full campaign set to begin on October 2. During Critical Role's live event on Saturday, he came on stage as part of the announcement. This new campaign will be set outside the Exandria setting of the first three—'Vox Machina,' 'Mighty Nein,' and 'Bells Hells'—and help to give original Critical DM Matthew Mercer a break. 'We've been enormous fans of Brennan's for many years now, and…he felt like the perfect storyteller to take our community somewhere entirely new,' said Critical alum and CEO Travis Willingham. 'Critical Role has always been about genuine connection through storytelling first and foremost, and as Brennan himself will tell you, he's still played more TTRPGs away from a camera than in front of it. His passion and drive for worldbuilding is infectious, and it's been an absolute joy to spark off him as we forge ahead.' For Dimension 20 fans wondering how this change affects that show, Mulligan will still to lead that show. Per Variety, he recently renewed his contract with the media company for another three years, which includes a 'new long-term contract for nonstop new seasons of D20,' said Mulligan on Instagram. At least two of those seasons will bring back the Intrepid Heroes who've headlined Fantasy High, Unsleeping City, and the current season Cloudward, Ho!. His separate Actual Play series Worlds Beyond Number will also continue. 'Needless to say, I'm finally playing almost as much tabletop as I'd like to!' he continued. 'It's a gift, honor, and privilege to set out on this new epic adventure with Critical Role.' Want more io9 news? Critical Role Announces Their Next Campaign With New Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan

Worlds will soon collide for fans of tabletop roleplaying games as a major shakeup in the actual play community just hit. Critical Role returns! Albeit with some massive changes. During a live show in Indiana tonight, the cast of Critical Role announced their newest campaign (and fourth overall) will begin airing live on Oct. 2 and will break away from the existing lore of Exandria to introduce a new world. But more shocking is the news that the company's founding member and primary Game Master, Matthew Mercer, won't be leading charge — instead replaced by another beloved player, Dimension 20's Brennan Lee Mulligan. More from Rolling Stone The Best Handheld Gaming Consoles, From Nintendo to Steam Deck 'Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound' Is a Dopamine-Fueled Slice of Eighties-Action Bliss How Labubu Fans Are Using Gaming Tactics to Nab the Summer's Hottest Trend In an accompanying release, Critical Role confirmed that Mulligan will be take on the role of Game Master for the full duration of the campaign (rather than a guest stint), and reiterated that the campaign's new direction with leave the ongoing saga and narrative continuity of Exandria behind for a 'bold evolution for the franchise, ushering in a new era with new legends to be forged in a brand new world.' Critical Role's previous three campaigns (Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein, and Bells Hells) all told independent stories that were connected by a singular universe and shared history. Travis Willingham, a founding member of the TTRPG troupe and CEO of Critical Role Productions, issued a statement saying, 'We've been enormous fans of Brennan's for many years now, and when it came to giving both Matthew Mercer and the world of Exandria a bit of a breather, Brennan felt like the perfect storyteller to take our community somewhere entirely new.' The announcement comes as a time when many fans — and the cast members themselves — have wondered what the future of the actual play show and company looks like. Celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, Critical Role has become a cultural phenomenon and partially helped revitalize the tabletop community in media. The group of voice actors (including Sam Riegel, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Liam O'Brien, Ashley Johnson, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, and Matthew Mercer) began livestreaming their Dungeons & Dragons play sessions back in 2015, amassing a huge following on Twitch, that's subsequently grown into an entertainment juggernaut with multiple animated series, digital spin-off shows, comics, novelizations, and more. Teased in conversation with Rolling Stone last year, Critical Role recently confirmed that they've begun work on a video game, in addition to launching their own proprietary tabletop game called Daggerheart, which was used as the framework for the group's latest actual play mini-series, Age of Umbra. At this time, it's unclear if Campaign 4 will utilize the Daggerheart system or if it'll stick to Dungeons & Dragons. The inclusion of Mulligan is huge, but not entirely surprising. A well-established Game Master and comedian, Mulligan created Dimension 20 for streaming service Dropout, which quickly became its own titanic success; Dimension 20 even sold-out Madison Square Garden for a live play one-shot earlier this year. Although he's appeared as a guest on Critical Role's show, Mulligan's lead role in Campaign 4 is akin to an Avengers-level crossover in the tabletop community. Both Critical Role and Dimension 20 have established huge fan bases with parasocial relationships to the casts, stoking fear of what Critical Role's show will look like once its founding members ultimately move on. But the writing has been on the wall for some time, especially for Mercer. Speaking with Rolling Stone previously, the Critical Role CCO suggested that he may eventually movie into a 'Professor X' role as a mentor to the next generation of storytellers rather than remaining the face of the brand in perpetuity. 'It's been a process of introducing friends and new faces into the community. 'Look, we love them. If you like us, we know you'll learn to love them too,'' Mercer said to Rolling Stone. 'It's less about us going away and more about bringing more friends into the fold.' Critical Role's third campaign ended earlier this year, with all episodes currently available on the group's YouTube channel and subscription service Beacon. New episodes of Critical Role can be watched live on Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube when Campaign 4 launches on Oct. 2.
