
Kimchi, ginseng and halal beef: Korea's food diplomacy gets foothold in UAE
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Welcoming a contingent of Korean food makers, an exhibition hall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, turned into a vibrant showcase of Korea's food industry Tuesday.
The 2025 Dubai K-Food Fair, a two-day event held from Tuesday to Wednesday by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, or aT, brought together 30 Korean companies and 60 buyers from across the Middle East.
Thirty booths lined the venue, each representing a slice of the K-food industry, with a singular purpose: To turn Korea's food culture into tangible export deals in Islamic consumer markets.
Much of the focus centered on red ginseng, rice cakes, Korean beef and, perhaps needless to say, kimchi. During the fair, more than 251 tailored one-on-one meetings were conducted, culminating in seven memorandums of understanding valued at over $2 million, according to aT.
At Nonghyup Red Ginseng's booth, a director surnamed Nam, fresh from a business meeting with a local buyer, said the buyer had shown keen interest in the product's reputed health benefits and skin-enhancing properties.
'We're equipped to produce halal-certified ginseng," he said. "With the UAE's strategic location, strong consumer spending and rising appreciation for Korean ginseng, it offers an ideal entry point to the broader Middle Eastern market."
Roydon Dmello, CEO of Pure Heart General Trading, was among the many buyers at the event. He said that tteokbokki, Korea's spicy rice cake dish, has the most market potential.
'I think tteokbokki has strong growth potential, but if the texture were a bit softer, people would enjoy it more,' he said, adding that he also imports rabokki, a variation that includes ramyeon, which sells very well.
Enthusiasm for Korean food among UAE consumers is already showing up in the numbers. As of May, Korea's food exports to the UAE had risen 40.2 percent on-year, totaling $116 million.
Joo Won-chul, director general of the Food Industry Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, pledged to adapt to shifting conditions to sustain Korean food's momentum.
'We will respond swiftly to the rapidly changing export landscape and actively address the challenges faced by exporters," he said.
Change of scene, palate
The event's success encapsulates a sharp shift, according to Shin Dong-chul, founder of 1004 Gourmet, a UAE-based Korean food and beauty retail company that operates five stores and supplies Korean products to more than 600 hotels and restaurants.
When the first shop opened in 2008, Korean food was largely unfamiliar to local consumers.
'Back then, around 80 percent of our customers were Korean expatriates. Now, that figure has flipped, 80 percent are non-Korean,' Shin said during an interview with The Korea Herald, attributing the shift to the global rise of Korean culture and, more recently, word-of-mouth among chefs and influencers.
Shin is also at the center of a growing campaign to introduce premium Korean cuisine, particularly Hanwoo to one of the world's most discerning halal markets.
'The chefs here always ask, 'Where's the Hanwoo?'" Shin said. 'They know it from visits to Korea. They remember the flavor.' Unlike Japanese Wagyu, prized for its high fat content, Hanwoo offers a more balanced profile with rich aroma, distinct flavor and a savory, firm texture, he added.
Hanwoo's popularity was palpable not only at the food fair but also at its first-ever launch showcase in Abu Dhabi, hosted by aT a day earlier to introduce Korea's halal-certified Hanwoo.
'At Hanwoo's first launch event, several attendees expressed interest in importing the beef," an official from the Hapcheon Livestock Cooperative Federation said. "During the fair, one group visited a different Hanwoo booth and signed an MOU.'
Korean food fervor in Dubai shows no signs of slowing, with the Dubai branch of Korea 360 — a physical space established through interagency efforts to showcase Korean content from dramas and K-pop to food, fashion and cosmetics — helping sustain the momentum.
'Since opening in April, the Dubai branch has drawn an average of 1,200 visitors on weekends and about 400 on weekdays,' said Park Young-il, director of the UAE Business Center at the Korea Creative Content Agency.
Park said the venue, which will run through April next year, is expected to promote Hallyu and support Korea's broader market expansion in the Middle East.

Consumer prices rise 2.2% in June on higher industrial goods, service costs
South Korea's consumer prices grew at the 2 percent level in June, mainly driven by higher costs of industrial goods, notably processed food products, government data showed Wednesday. Consumer prices, a key gauge of inflation, increased 2.2 percent from a year earlier last month, according to the data from Statistics Korea. Inflation had remained above the Bank of Korea's 2 percent target for four consecutive months through April before slightly easing to 1.9 percent in May. The June figure also marked the steepest on-year increase since January, when inflation also stood at 2.2 percent. The statistics agency attributed the June increase to the recent depreciation of the local currency, which led to higher import prices for industrial goods A steady rise in service prices also contributed to overall inflationary pressure. Prices of processed food products rose 4.6 percent on-year, the highest increase since November 2023. Processed food prices contributed 0.39 percentage point to overall inflation in June. Notable increases were seen in bread and coffee, which jumped 6.4 percent on-year and 12.4 percent on-year, respectively. "Processed food price increases marked a gradual reflection of rising raw material costs and the depreciation of the Korean won," said Park Byung-seon, an official at Statistics Korea. Petroleum product prices inched up 0.3 percent, reversing the previous month's decline. The rise was largely attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which drove up global oil prices. In the service sector, electricity, gas and water charges rose by 1.8 percent, 3.1 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively. Among personal services, prices for dining out and non-dining services rose 3.1 percent on-year and 3.5 percent on-year, respectively. In contrast, prices of agricultural, livestock and fishery products fell 1.8 percent on-year in June. However, egg prices surged 6 percent, marking the steepest on-year increase since January 2022. Korea must weigh the risks and rewards of stablecoins amid intensifying dispute In Seoul's financial circles, a new image is emerging: a digital coin emblazoned with the South Korean flag, suspended somewhere between statecraft and speculation. Once a fringe idea among cryptocurrency enthusiasts, the notion of a won-backed stablecoin has moved to the center of the country's monetary policy debate. What appears to be a pragmatic embrace of innovation conceals deeper tensions about the architecture of money, institutional trust and the evolving role of central banks in a digitized economy. At the core of the issue lies a contradiction. President Lee Jae Myung's administration has pledged to foster a stablecoin ecosystem to keep pace with global developments and safeguard monetary sovereignty. The ruling Democratic Party of Korea is advancing legislation to allow private companies — with as little as 10 billion won ($7.4 million) in capital — to issue coins fully backed by the Korean won. Major banks are already registering trademarks and forming blockchain partnerships. Related equities are climbing on speculative enthusiasm. Yet as momentum builds, the Bank of Korea is applying the brakes. Its own pilot project for a central bank digital currency, once touted as a state-led alternative to private stablecoins, has lost traction after years of investment. The central bank, once positioned to shape the digital finance agenda, now finds itself increasingly marginalized. Officials warn that if the market is flooded with privately issued pseudo-money, the bank's ability to manage interest rates, control liquidity and maintain financial stability could be severely compromised. These concerns are not theoretical. The global stablecoin market is overwhelmingly dominated by dollar-based tokens such as USDT and USDC, which account for over 99 percent of transaction volume. Proponents of a Korean alternative argue that without a domestic option, the country risks capital flight and diminished control over trade settlement. But these arguments remain speculative. The BOK, echoing the Bank for International Settlements, has repeatedly cautioned that stablecoins issued by private firms — even when pegged to fiat currencies — pose systemic risks. These include liquidity mismatches, opaque reserves and the danger of a 'coin run' in which investor panic depletes backing assets and triggers broader financial contagion. The collapse of Terra-Luna in 2022 still casts a long shadow over the debate. Procedurally, the rush toward legislation raises additional concerns. Multiple competing bills are circulating in the National Assembly. Oversight is fragmented among the BOK, the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, with no unified strategy in place. The absence of robust consumer protections, capital requirements and clear supervisory authority underscores the lack of regulatory preparedness. Reports that the Presidential Commission on Policy Planning has urged the BOK to 'show flexibility' and devise alternatives reflect mounting political pressure on the central bank to step aside. This disjointed approach points to a deeper dilemma. South Korea seeks to lead in digital finance but remains uncertain about how monetary authority should be shared — or defended — in an era of decentralization. The CBDC's limited progress reflects institutional inertia in the face of rapid technological disruption. Meanwhile, private sector players are advancing with greater speed, louder voices and fewer constraints. The implications extend beyond implementation. A poorly regulated stablecoin framework could distort trade data, fuel asset bubbles and erode trust in the won. Yet delaying reform risks entrenching dollar dependence and leaving South Korea behind in emerging payment systems. The task is to permit innovation while preserving accountability and credibility. South Korea is not wrong to explore stablecoins. But it is wrong to move without a cohesive plan. True stability is not found in code or collateral alone, but in the strength of the institutions that stand behind them.

Saudi Vision 2030's smart city has S. Korea at its heart: NMDC CEO
Naver Cloud forms first Korean partnership with megasized smart city project to work on autonomous, smart technologies Saudi Arabia's capital is undergoing a massive urban transformation aimed at reshaping not only Riyadh, but the entire Middle East -- and the kingdom wants South Korea to be part of the initiative, according to the head of the state-owned developer leading the project. New Murabba Development Co., wholly owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, was established to build the world's largest modern downtown in Riyadh as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative. Michael Dyke, CEO of NMDC, said Korea is emerging as a key partner for the project, citing the country's advanced technology and strong cultural ties with Saudi Arabia. 'Korea's advantage is that it already has a history and track record of operating within the kingdom,' Dyke said in an interview with The Korea Herald on the sidelines of the New Murabba Investment and Partnership Forum on Monday in Seoul. He referred to the economic boom of the 1970s and '80s, when Korean construction companies were instrumental in developing Saudi Arabia's infrastructure. 'The relationships are long and strong, and partnerships with Saudi companies are already well established from within South Korea,' he added. Dyke pointed to three pillars of partnerships with Korea: industrial, technological and real estate. 'One thing I would emphasize is that because of the scale of New Murabba, there will be multiple partnerships required to cover all areas,' he noted. New Murabba, spanning 19 square kilometers in Riyadh, is envisioned as a megasized smart city. At its center will be the Mukaab, a 400-meter-tall cuboid skyscraper that will house residences, retail, hospitality, cultural and leisure facilities under a single dome. Set to be the largest structure by volume, the Mukaab will be spacious enough to fit 20 Empire State Buildings. Construction is already underway, with completion targeted for 2030. 'We're in the capital city of Riyadh, and New Murabba will become the downtown of the capital city of the Middle East. The Mukaab, where we will have the high-tech core, will be the beating heart of this downtown,' Dyke said. Regarding the integration of Korean culture into the project, Dyke responded with enthusiasm. 'The simple answer is yes. With 100 million annual visits projected for the Mukaab, and 35 percent of those being international visitors, we need familiarity in food, retail and entertainment,' he explained. Dyke highlighted that his interest in Seoul is rooted in how it 'pushes the boundaries of technology and redefines how entertainment and food and beverage experiences are created.' In the years ahead, as Saudi Arabia prepares to host Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034, Dyke is confident that New Murabba will be ready to welcome millions of visitors with its state-of-the-art stadiums and integrated transit connectivity. 'So we are designing our city to be smart from the very beginning, and that's where our collaboration with Naver comes in, helping us ensure the city is future-proof for generations to come, not just for the next five, 10 or 20 years.' Despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Dyke appeared unconcerned, calling it a fact of life in today's world of constant change. 'Clearly, some things have happened more recently in the Middle East, but I know that much of the region is back to normal,' he said. 'It remains business as usual." On the day of the forum, Naver Cloud signed a memorandum of understanding with New Murabba, becoming the project's first Korean partner. The agreement opens the door to future collaboration in areas such as robotics, autonomous driving and smart city platforms, according to NMDC. 'Mukaab is a very complex ecosystem and requires companies of scale to match its scale,' Dyke said, explaining that Naver's technological prowess and capacity align with their needs. New Murabba planned to explore future collaborations in Seoul through a two-day closed-door forum on Tuesday and Wednesday, where more than 500 participants, including company executives, investors and government officials, were to engage in discussions on investment and partnership opportunities under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. minmin@
