BYD achieves 13 million NEV production milestone
BYD, a global leader in the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment, marked a major milestone as it celebrated the production of its 13-millionth NEV. The landmark vehicle—a Yangwang U7—rolled off the assembly line at the brand's Xiaomo Production Base, located in the Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone.
This achievement not only highlights BYD's rapid manufacturing capabilities but also cements its leadership position in the global NEV market. In the first half of 2025 alone, BYD sold more than 2.113 million units in China, representing a solid 31.5 per cent growth compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, its international operations saw exponential growth, with overseas sales reaching 4,72,000 units—a staggering 128.5 per cent year-on-year increase.
Thanks to these robust figures, BYD has not only maintained its dominance in the global NEV industry but has also become the first automaker worldwide to produce 13 million new energy vehicles—a feat that sets a new benchmark for the industry.

BYD Atto 3 surpasses one million sales
The BYD Atto 3, also known as the Yuan Plus in its home market of China, has officially crossed the one million sales mark worldwide. First launched in February 2022, the electric SUV has achieved this milestone in just 31 months, reflecting its steady popularity across various international markets.
Sales momentum began strongly in China, where the model recorded around 300,000 units in the first 14 months alone. This was followed by an additional 200,000 units in the next six months. The remaining half a million units were sold over the course of 25 months, largely driven by growing demand in global markets as exports expanded to more than 100 countries.
It took BYD approximately 1,391 days to reach the million-unit mark—averaging about 719 vehicles sold each day. While the figures highlight the Atto 3's widespread appeal, BYD has not provided a region-wise sales breakdown to detail how different markets contributed to this success.

In contrast, several local brands underperformed. BYD's premium Denza Z9GT and the Huawei-backed Aito M9 failed in three of the six scenarios, while Xiaomi's much-hyped SU7 managed to pass just one. Huawei, BYD Stay Silent, Musk Reacts While Tesla CEO Elon Musk weighed in on the results on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying 'Tesla achieved the top results in China despite having no local training data," other companies were less forthcoming. Huawei's HIMA alliance dismissed the results as a 'so-called test," and BYD and Xiaomi declined to comment. Musk's remarks highlighted ongoing data constraints. Tesla cannot train its AI software within China due to data export laws and is still awaiting regulatory clearance to transfer driving data collected in Shanghai to the U.S. for algorithm training. Also watch: Tesla Model Y: India Prices vs Global Rates. Would you be interested in buying? Let us know Regulatory Scrutiny Grows After Fatal Crash The timing of the test follows rising concerns over driver assistance systems in China. The deadly crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March with the death of three people, has placed dangerous scrutiny from the public and regulation scrutiny after the authorities involved had prohibited marketing terms like "autonomous driving" and "smart driving," to ensure that consumers don't misuse the ADAS technologies. China's Ministry of Public Security recently warned that drivers will bear legal liability in accidents if they misuse or overly rely on driver assistance features, underscoring that true autonomous driving has yet to be achieved. Consumer Perception Shifts, But Tesla Faces Market Pressure Despite Tesla's strong showing in the test, its sales in China have remained under pressure. The company's China-made EV sales rose a marginal 0.8% in June year-on-year, breaking an eight-month losing streak, but still fell on a quarterly basis as local competitors introduced cheaper models. Adding to the challenge is pricing. Tesla's ADAS suite is sold as an optional feature for nearly $9,000 in China, while many Chinese brands—including Xiaomi and BYD—offer similar capabilities at no additional cost. Teslas also rely on cameras and AI for driver assistance, while their Chinese competitors add lidar sensors to get better performance. In the midst of this growing semi-autonomous driving market, the test results not only revive discussions about the technology differential between Tesla and Chinese competitors, but also more pressing questions about consumer safety and regulation and the viability that will consumers trust such advanced mobility systems long-term. Tesla beats Chinese rivals BYD, Xiaomi & Huawei in driving assisted tests: Report
Billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla outperformed Chinese rivals, including BYD, Xiaomi and Huawei in a test of assisted driving technologies on China's highways, according to results published by TikTok owner Bytedance's auto unit Dcar. Tesla scored the best in the highway test among 36 models, with its Model 3 and Model X passing five out of six scenarios. State television CCTV and Dcar jointly tested the level 2 advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) from more than 20 electric vehicle brands in China and rated their performance in a series of scenarios with higher risks of accidents on highways and urban traffic. Tesla scored the best in the highway test among 36 models, with its Model 3 and Model X passing five out of six scenarios, while BYD's Denza Z9GT and Huawei-backed Aito M9 failed in three scenarios. Xiaomi's SU7 passed in one of six. In a Weibo post on Friday, HIMA, the Huawei-led auto alliance, said it declined to comment on the "so-called test." BYD and Xiaomi didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. "Due to laws against data export, Tesla achieved the top results in China despite having no local training data," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on his X account on Friday. Tesla has been caught in what Musk described as a "quandary", as the U.S. doesn't allow its AI software to be trained in China, while the automaker has been seeking approval from Chinese regulators to transfer data saved locally in Shanghai back to the United States for algorithm training. Domestic brands should face up to the gap with Tesla in autonomous driving, Wang Yao, deputy chief engineer of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, told an auto forum in Shanghai earlier this month. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, in remarks after a Tesla Model Y delivered itself from an Austin, Texas factory to its owner in the area roughly 30 minutes away, said "we will continue to learn" from Tesla which has led industry trends. The test came amid growing safety concerns in China about the ADAS after a highway accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 killed three people in March. State media have blamed misleading promotions for resulting drivers' improper uses of the technologies and the authorities have banned the uses of terms such as "smart driving" and "autonomous driving" for marketing driving assistance features. The public security ministry said this week that the country will set out legal responsibilities related to the technology that has yet achieved true autonomous driving. Drivers face safety and legal risks if they are distracted in accidents when assisted driving is turned on, the ministry warned. Xiaomi had seen a slump in new EV orders as a consumer backlash began in April following the fatal trash, but the impact seems short-lived, with its new electric SUV receiving exceptionally strong initially orders after it went on sale last month. Tesla's sales of its China-made electric vehicles edged up 0.8% in June from a year earlier, snapping an eight-month losing streak, but they continued to fall on a quarterly basis in the face of lower-cost new models from its Chinese rivals. Tesla's assisted driving suite is available in China for nearly $9,000, while the technology from its local rivals including Xiaomi and BYD is without extra cost, pressuring the U.S. automaker's self-driving future. Tesla's technology approach relies solely on cameras as sensors and artificial intelligence while most Chinese peers including BYD use lidar (light detection and range sensors) additionally to ensure performance.
