Indonesia's Foreign Minister To Attend ASEAN Meetings In KL

BusinessToday04-07-2025
Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono is set to attend the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related key sessions in Kuala Lumpur next week, scheduled from July 8 to 11.
According to Siddharto Suryodhipuro, Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono will participate in a series of meetings, including regional dialogues and bilateral engagements with ASEAN's key partners.
'AMM is an important platform for Southeast Asia to discuss regional and global developments. Given the current international political dynamics, ministers are expected to deliberate on a wide range of issues, both directly impacting the region and those with broader global implications,' Siddharto said during a media briefing on Thursday.
Sugiono will also co-chair the ASEAN-Australia Meeting alongside his Australian counterpart, in line with Indonesia's current role as ASEAN's coordinator for relations with Australia.
Malaysia is chairing ASEAN for 2025, marking its fifth time leading the regional bloc after holding the post in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
ASEAN comprises 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Sugiono is also expected to attend the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD), which will also be hosted by Malaysia.
'His active participation reflects Indonesia's sustained commitment to ASEAN and its efforts in promoting a peaceful, stable and prosperous Southeast Asia in line with national interests,' Siddharto added.

On Australian PM's visit to China, the two nations ‘hold back' on disputes

Beijing has set aside major disputes with Canberra and instead filled Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's six-day visit to China this week with a slew of trade and investment deals, a move analysts said was an effort to find common ground amid trade tensions with the United States. The deals include the potential widening of access to the Chinese market for Australian farm produce and coal, cooperation in the digitalisation of the financial sector, investment in greenfield projects and potential tariff cuts for Australian agricultural exports, according to a source with knowledge of their content. 13MP to dominate next Dewan Rakyat sitting, debate may run into the night

SUNGAI PETANI: The upcoming Dewan Rakyat session, scheduled to begin next Monday until August 28, is expected to run into the night with the main focus being the tabling and debate of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said his office has received a wide range of motions from the honourable members of parliament (MPs), indicating a packed and intense session ahead. "So I call on the people on the ground, when the 13MP is tabled, they have to inform their MPs about what they want to be raised in parliament. "Tag their MPs (on social media) so that their voices can be heard. "Don't wait until the MPs return to their constituencies to complain. "Raise the issue while [arliament is in session," he said after launching the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) at Taman Pekan Baru today. Johari said the sitting will probably be extended into the night to accommodate the packed schedule, beginning daily at 10am and possibly continuing until 10pm or 11pm. Johari said the tabling of the 13MP is particularly significant as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, and it offers an opportunity to showcase the country's resilience and progress amid global uncertainties. In another development, he urged the public to fully utilise services made available at Nadi centres to improve their livelihoods and economic opportunities. "Nadi isn't just about digital access or community programmes. It can be a one-stop centre for people to obtain vital information and explore business opportunities. "It's a platform to gain knowledge not only academically but also across various fields. "I encourage youth, especially, to take advantage of these centres to learn and engage with their communities," he said. Nadi Taman Pekan Baru, which began operations on Feb 9, is one of four new centres established in Kedah under the "1 DUN 1 Nadi" initiative, bringing the total number of Nadi centres in the state to 81. – Bernama
