2025 Peugeot 5008 review
Peugeot is marketing the 5008 as a 'hybrid', but really it's more of a mild hybrid. And it's a seven-seater too, but it's only a proper three-row SUV if those occupying the third row have no legs.
However, if you look beyond those assertions, this is a compelling family crossover wagon with a heap of interesting features, and one of the most enjoyable drive experiences of a car like this.
There are two versions of the 5008 Hybrid available — the Allure, at about $61,000 drive-away, and the more richly specified GT Premium at about $74,000 drive-away.
Keep in mind, that's getting you a big SUV that only comes with a tiny engine. The 5008 has a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that pairs to a six-speed electrified dual-clutch auto gearbox, which houses an electric motor inside it. That means this SUV can use electric power to assist with a bit more power, and it can even drive in EV mode in some instances. But it still isn't like a Toyota RAV4 or Kluger hybrid, and nor is the fuel consumption in real-world driving.
The 5008 is essentially the bigger, longer brother to the impressive 3008, and this one still isn't massive. At just over 4.7 metres long, it is more compact than plenty of midsize SUVs with five seats, but because of its stretched body appearance and long wheelbase, it has a substantial appearance.
And it has a whole heap of extroverted but elegant styling to it, though those 19-inch wheels (with less-than-excellent Giti tyres) are a bit odd.
Even so, there are the claw-theme light signatures front and rear, and the top-spec model gets a two-tone turret with a massive panoramic sunroof.
Inside, there's configurable ambient lighting that really changes the vibe. And it carries over Peugeot's polarising i-Cockpit cabin design, meaning you get a tiny little steering wheel that you look over the top of to see your instrumentation.
In this instance, it's a big single-piece 21-inch curved screen for the driver info stuff (including configurable displays) and the touchscreen media system interface, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen takes a bit of learning, and there's a lot going on. But there is another smaller touch panel below, called i-Toggles, to easily switch between menus.
Thankfully you still get a number of buttons (recirc, demister) and there's a volume scroller between the seats. That section of the cabin is divided by a spine-like structure finished in fabric – hate to think what it'll look like for drive-through frequenters after a few years.
But the design is otherwise special and spectacular, but also pretty well considered. There are good cupholders between the seats and big storage in the doors. In the second row it's well considered for stowage, too – and there's a neat tilt-slide mechanism for the seats, and there are ISOFIX points and top-tethers for child seats, but the centre belt comes from the ceiling and may get in the way when accessing the back.
Speaking of, the middle row slides to allow more space in the very back – but the third-row area is seriously cramped. I couldn't fit at 182cm/6'0' and medium build. It's strictly a 'bonus seats' situation for younger, nimbler occupants, though there are no child-seat anchors back there, no vents, and bugger all storage.
But it is pretty accommodating for cargo, thanks to some clever design - however, there's no spare: just a tyre repair kit.
It drives well, this thing. The hybrid system isn't obtrusive, and in fact it feels more oomphy than the combined outputs suggest. It's zippy, fun, and has a nice raspy note to it because of the three-cylinder engine.
It steers smaller than it is, with direct responses that feel a little bit at odds with the size of it. But it's fun to drive in corners, and the ride comfort is impressive, as is the general handling.
What could be better is the fuel consumption. The claim is 5.1 litres per 100km, but I saw 8.0L/100km across a mix of the sort of driving you might do. It needs 95RON premium unleaded, too.
It mightn't be the most pragmatic or frugal three-row SUV on the market, but for those eager for a different kind of family car, it could be worth a look.

Lando Norris completed a commanding 'double top' on Friday with the fastest times ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Briton, who is 16 points behind Piastri in the drivers' title race, clocked a best lap in 1:15.624 to outpace the Australian by 0.291 seconds after a tense second session at the Hungaroring circuit. 'The car felt pretty good from the first lap,' he said. 'And all of my laps were decent, but the second session was a bit more messy with more mistakes. But that's all part of practice I guess. 'We have a good understanding and I know what I want from my car, but of course it is difficult to get it. Chery has just launched a plug-in hybrid seven-seater SUV with almost 100km of EV driving range for less than $50,000 drive-away. In fact, it's even more affordable in the base model Urban grade, which is $45,990 drive-away. That means it's about $25,000 cheaper than a seven-seat Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and undercuts options like the Mazda CX-80 PHEV by about $35K, and you could buy TWO Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrids for the cost of ONE Kia Sorento PHEV. It's also about $17,000 cheaper than the most affordable Toyota Kluger, which doesn't even offer a plug-in option. For the moment, then, this SUV has some white space. Not to mention the Omoda 9, which is from the same family as this brand, but with a more premium bent, bigger battery, and all-wheel drive. Back to this model, though, you are getting a lot for a little when it comes to standard spec, too. The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid essentially ushers in an updated version of the Tiggo 8, with a new look front and rear, new doors with flush-close handles, and a heavily redesigned dashboard. Yes, it is a screen-dominated environment, but the display is very fast and intuitive, with a drop-down menu screen that works even if you're using smartphone mirroring, and there's a home bar at the bottom for climate controls that can be swiped up if you're using CarPlay. 2024 Chery Tiggo 8. Photo: Thomas Wielecki And while there are three rows of seats, the back row is a 'sometimes' set-up – there are no ISOFIX points or top-tethers back there, which is a shame. But with the middle row adjusted suitably, you can fit adults in all three rows at a pinch, provided they aren't in Sumo training. No third-row air-vents, either. It's similar to an Outlander in terms of back-row space, and with the third-row seats up there's space for a couple of small rolly bags or the kids' backpacks. Fold down the rear row, and you get a very usable amount of cargo capacity for a growing family. It doesn't miss on equipment either, with standard inclusions like LED lighting, 19-inch alloy wheels, a surround-view camera system with parking sensors all-round, puddle lights, fake leather interior trim, electric front seat adjustment, ambient lighting and a wireless phone charger. Picture: Supplied Choose the $50K Ultimate spec and you'll score heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, a panoramic glass roof and more. There's a full host of active safety tech like autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, speed sign recognition and a driver monitoring camera system – and they're well calibrated. It shares the same PHEV powertrain with the smaller Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine teamed to an electric motor. There's a single-speed transmission sending power to the front wheels only – no AWD model is available. It has a claimed EV driving range of 95km from its 18.3kWh battery pack – good enough for the majority of commuters to get to work and back fully electrically. It can drive up to 120km/h in EV when the battery is above 30 per cent charge. Once the battery depletes to around 20 per cent, the powertrain will kick the petrol engine into life to run in HEV (hybrid) mode, using petrol, electric or both to keep things moving – and it is a very smooth, extremely quiet operator. On the launch drive I saw 78km of EV driving before the engine properly kicked in, and when it did, the efficiency was still super impressive. Picture: Supplied The Tiggo 8 has a more mature drive experience than the cheaper Tiggo 7 five-seater, which is a big reason I'd suggest you look at this one if you like to drive. Because it's smoother riding over bumps thanks to a longer wheelbase and different suspension tune, and feels far more convincing when the surface is a bit challenging. Not super squishy or soft, but markedly better than the 7. And while the steering still won't stoke many fires, the fact it rides on Continental tyres means you have predictable response and quietness. The brand offers a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty for the vehicle. Servicing is every 12 months/15,000km, and there's a seven-year capped-price plan, too. Lando Norris contradicts Oscar Piastri over Max Verstappen call
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have had one of the cleanest and most cordial world title scraps in a long time, but there are some things where the F1 championship contenders are divided. Heading into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, Piastri made the blunt statement all fans have thought for a long time — that the 2025 drivers' championship is now a head-to-head battle between the McLaren pair. However, Norris on Thursday voiced his disagreement to the idea that four-time world champ Max Verstappen is out of contention. The Red Bull ace, who on Friday morning announced he will stay with the energy drink operation through to the end of the 2026 series, has also all-but waived the white flag. Verstappen has fallen 81 points behind series leader Piastri. Red Bull are in a state of flux, after sacking their team principal Christian Horner this month and replacing the Briton with Laurent Mekies, the boss of their 'B' team Racing Bulls. Despite this, Norris says a line can't be put through the Dutch driver's name yet. As reported by Racing News 365, Norris said he wouldn't rule Verstappen out. 'It's never impossible,' Norris said. 'We proved that last year, but he's quite a long way back.' The British racer went on to say: 'We have a team that's a lot more stable and performing a lot better than Red Bull is, but Max is still, quite easily, one of the best drivers ever in Formula 1. 'So, as a driver, I wouldn't rule him out, but we have a better car, we have a better team, so I have my confidence in them that we can, we can stay ahead.' Piastri earlier called it like he saw it. 'I suppose so,' he said when asked if it was a 'two-horse' race for the title, per 'I think every weekend now, or the last few weekends anyway, it's been Lando and I. 'I expect our competition to still be strong and put up a good fight, especially at certain tracks through the rest of the year, but whether that comes from Max or Ferrari or Mercedes or someone else, maybe, we never really know. 'So, I'm not too concerned about what happens in that. I'm just trying to win each race and extend the lead. 'But I think clearly Lando and I are in the same car, which is the best, and he's naturally going to be the closest competition.' McLaren boss Zak Brown this week insisted the team won't be playing favourites and that the championship race will be a 'coin toss' between his two drivers. Piastri has had the upper hand on Norris for the majority of the season, having won six of the first 13 races. The 24-year-old from Melbourne holds a 16-point advantage over his 25-year-old teammate. With McLaren on track to secure their first drivers' championship since 2008, Brown is leaving the championship door open and refusing to back just one of the two. 'I think Oscar was a little disappointed with qualifying in Belgium. Lando was very happy. I'm sure he'll be a little bummed that he didn't win today, but it's coming off two wins. I think it's going to be a coin toss every weekend,' he told Sky Sport following the Belgian Grand Prix. 'Oscar is a machine. And what's impressive is how aggressive he is, and yet he always brings the car home. That's quite a talent.' Brown also said Verstappen could not be ruled out yet. Red Bull is reportedly running an upgraded package this weekend. 'I think it's too early. It's looking good, but Max … there's a lot of racing left to go. We've got a nice gap, but I wouldn't say we're there,' he said. 'We've all been around this sport too long. To start dancing before you're in the end zone is a very dangerous thing to do.'
